The Black River Preserve is truly a spectacular place. The location of the preserve, along the…read moreLake Michigan coastal area, makes it a premier migratory songbird stopover. There is also great biological diversity ranging from poplars and redbud trees to hemlocks and birch trees. The Preserve encompasses 120 acres of rolling forest, meadows, and scenic tributary ravines. The trails are all marked and offer easy-to-difficult hiking options. We spent a Sunday afternoon in October walking through this magical preserve. The Mainstem Trail is the most direct route through the preserve. We traversed slops of the north and middle ravine and crossed streams along the way. We stopped at the "quiet spot" bridge and closed our eyes and just listened to the peaceful sounds of nature. The Black River Preserve is located on 8th Ave. in South Haven. There is a gravel park lot and a trail map posted at the trail head. If you are looking for a place to go for nature and a quiet atmosphere, be sure to check out the Black River Preserve.

We were rewarded with a gorgeous view of the truly colorful shades of blue of the Lake. Combined, the trails are only about 3 miles in length since this is a narrow, alongside-the-lake State Park & the trails go from the main roadway, to the top of the bluffs & then back again to the roadway. Further down that roadway is a campground, a good amount of parking, a playground, picnic tables, grills, open fields, and, the best part of all, the mile long beach, which is comprised of super soft sand, space to stretch out, a not-as-enjoyable view of a water treatment plant, & the fun of collecting smooth, soft stones that dot the beach, The waters of Lake Michigan don't come much above your waist for a good 75-100 feet, so it's easy to stay cool while you stand around with sisters (that was us!), and others. Love love love this park!…read more It's ALWAYS CLEAN.. and the people are most always kind. The yearly Ox Roast festival they hold in this park on Labor Day weekend is ALWAYS a great time!! There is a nice Pavillion for parties with large..clean..picnic tables. And a cute little restroom building near the picnic area. The restrooms could use a little more cleaning though. You give her a nice playset with lots of slides, swings, and other activities, and she'll end up happily playing the day away. Today, we ended up at Lawrence Park- while she had a good time, there were a number of problems we found, too. First off, the park is a good size- there's an absolutely massive playset with slides, swings and everything a kid could want to climb on, swing from or slide down- I'm fairly certain that my niece found every last thing to play on, but we're certain we'll come on back to confirm that! There's also a couple basketball courts, picnic tables and grills, but the park is right there in Lawrence so grabbing a bite from a local restaurant is an option if you don't feel like packing food. The playset is surrounded by wood mulch. As far as problems, well... the basketball courts have seen better days. They're cracked with grass growing up between the cracks, and really need to be redone before they end up completely unplayable. Portions of the playset are also broken- most noticeably the bridge pictured above, that looks like it was cut or undone. It might be a bit of a safety hazard, but it was really only a small disappointment to my niece. Overall, it's a darn good park with the possibility to be a lot better with a bit of work and some elbow grease!

Want a quiet, peaceful beach on Lake Michigan? One that has picnic tables, a ramped deck on top of…read morethe dune (thank you, city of South Haven, for providing handicap accessibility), and best of all in this town, a restroom with changing areas that stays open past dusk? Enter Packard Park - it's 2 parks north of North Beach, is free, and is the quietest beach in town. You'll head down a short dune and then find the big lake. People bring chairs or towels. The entrance to the water is sandy, and the bottom is firmer than that of South Beach, by the pier. You can see the pier in the distance, just south. Up by the parking lot, you'll see several picnic tables, a grill, and a restroom. The women's has two toilet stalls and two changing stalls - WITH DOORS! thank you. The park is open until 10. Often, when we swim at dusk, we get out of the water too late to change in the North or South Beach bathrooms. NO worries of that here. No lifeguard. Plenty of parking, and a grassy area for kids to run around on if you're cooking dinner before (or after) swimming.

I was brought here as a surprise stop with Coastal Tours. I had actually never heard of this field…read morenor seen any photos. But I was blown away by how beautiful it was. Our guide told us about the history behind the field which was truly harrowing but showed the beauty of love and the cyclical nature of life. I was incredibly moved going here, it's somewhere that you can come and visit during any period of life but it's a good place to remember when things get tough. I'm sorry for the people who created this field but so beyond grateful for the ways in which they've turned grief into something so meaningful and moving. If you do come here, please respect what the space is for/about but I highly recommend you come here.

There were bathrooms up near the parking lot. Kind of a mixed sand rock beach but mostly sand. When we left, the parking lot was packed and people were lining the street, so I'd say go early if you want a parking spot.

At the beach we found geodes, lightening rocks, and sea glass. This area has a small 45ish car parking lot. It is dog friendly (dogs must be on leash and picked up after). I am so covered in welts this morning, I am just miserable. We had reserved space 52 and the cabin…read morenext to it for 2 nights, but had to leave after just one night. It was the camping trip from HELL! We were just covered in swarms of mosquitoes the whole time...never seen anything like it! We all were bitten 100s of times! Insect spray did not keep them away. This is not something the campground can't control! Mosquito abatement is 100% achievable! The campground is infested! We also found several ticks. Never going back!
