Picture do not do this place justice, the shear magnitude is amazing. Be sure to go inside, I've heard from several people they didn't know you could go in. It's simple, with long halls but the feeling of being in a tomb has a serene feeling that I've never had before as I walked along the silent marble hallways. I wish we could have been allowed up the stairs, not sure why that feature wasn't open but from the looks of the weeds growing on top, it seems it has been shut down for quite awhile. Additionally, you can see Lincoln's first resting place in this same cemetery just down the hill from here. read more

If you understand the impact of this great man and are in the area, it is only fitting to visit this sight. For me, it was awe-inspiring. The tomb is so reverently designed. It was quite the experience to stand quietly before the resting remains of America's greatest President. I hope to return one day. Also, be sure to check out the Roy Bertelli tomb not far from the Lincoln Tomb and learn his story. I think Mr. Lincoln would have gotten a kick and been honored knowing Mr. Bertelli's accordion rest in peace near him. read more

An impressive site and worth the trip. It isn't far from the Lincoln Museum & Library. It is beautiful but busy with many visitors and school groups. It is wheelchair accessible with handicapped parking (somewhat limited). We would suggest going early to avoid crowds. There are volunteers / staff on site but not much info is provided -- best to read up on the site and history prior to your visit. We were somewhat surprised to hear some staff members talking loudly and laughing very loudly after we went inside to view the burial chamber. Their voices echoed throughout the area for several minutes and it was disconcerting as this is a burial site. If the staff don't model proper etiquette there is no hope for visitors to know how to behave. Still a great place to visit. read more

Lincoln's Funeral Train: On April 21, 1865, a train carrying Lincoln and his deceased son Willie (who had died in 1862 of typhoid fever; 11 y.o.) started its adventure from Washington DC to Springfield, IL. It traveled through 180 cities/7 states. At each stop, Lincoln's coffin was removed, placed on a horse drawn hearse, and shown for public viewing. It was a 2-3 week long funeral procession. Lincoln was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, IL; however, instead of being "laid to rest", his body was moved 17 times and casket opened 5 times before he received his final resting place THIRTY SIX years later inside a steel cage beneath 2 tons of concrete piled 10 ft high over his coffin. In 1876, a mobster named Big Jim recruited 4 men to help him steal Abraham Lincolns body for a ransom of $200,000. He didn't know that 2 of the men he recruited were actually secret agent officers. Concerned with other potential grave robbers, the tombs caretakers decided to safeguard his body. They moved the coffin, covered it with lumber, and swore to secrecy. They called themselves the "The Lincoln Guard of Honor." His body, along with his wife's, was moved a few more times. Robert Lincoln was the one who finally laid his father in his permanent resting place in 1901. Random Fact: right after his assassination Army Surgeons performed an autopsy of the G.S.G in Lincoln's head at the White House. The removed his entire brain. While examining it, the bullet slipped out. read more

At the end of a trip filled with Lincoln sites and activities, visiting his Tomb was a must. Unfortunately, it is currently under renovation, so we couldn't go up the stairs to the top of the outer tomb. They do allow cameras with or without flash, which was nice; unfortunately, it was so dark that my camera couldn't take photos of any of the plaques. The receiving vault is at the bottom of a hill nearby, which is where Lincoln & his son lay for approximately 8 months while the tomb was being built. Oak Ridge Cemetery also includes war memorials, the grave of William Herndon (Lincoln's law partner), and the grave of Vachel Lindsay, which we happened to stumble upon as driving around. read more

Neat to see.Free of charge. Very neat cemetery by itself. There was an advance team there for a future Vice President visit.

If you are visiting Springfield, this is a must-see. Wonderful monument and memorial to Lincoln and his family, and his/their sacrifice.

If you're in Springfield, swing by on the way to or from the airport, as it's very close.

Great family place to visit and doesn't costs which is rare in this economy . Interesting to see national site

I know that a lot of people are giving five stars here, but it's good, but you don't get a lot of information. Yes, it's made of marble and really nice along with the people working the place are friendly. You can walk through the tomb in a matter of minutes and a nice monument to a popular President who lost his life, but after some pictures you will be gone pretty quickly. My advice is to hit the local museum along with the burial place. It's a beautiful cemetery with a lot of history, so maybe visit the whole place and not just the tomb. read more

What a handsome site. Expansive yards, appropriate fortification styled marble tomb, lovely obelisk, don't forget to rub Lincoln's nose for luck out front. Open 9-5 Double sets of stairs lead to a terrace, above which rises the 117-foot-tall obelisk. At the corners of the shaft, large pedestals serve as bases for four bronze sculpture groups, each representing one of the four Civil War military services--infantry, artillery, cavalry, and navy. A taller base on the obelisk's south side holds a heroic bronze statue of Lincoln. It is impressive. Inside is one of the more solemn of tombs. Steel plaques with many of his iconic speeches, small bronze statues depicting the President in different moments of his life, and a lovely sarcophagus sitting above his actual grave. His family (except for Robert) is also buried here. They are entombed in the wall in the burial tomb. Easy parking. Your GPS takes you through town but there are signs to help guide you. It's an important stop for any history, Lincoln, Civil War or national monument buff. read more

We spent three days in Springfield seeing all of the Lincoln attractions, and this was easily one of our favorites. The tomb is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their four sons (their oldest, Robert, served in the military and is buried in Arlington Cemetery). The tomb is huge and gorgeous. Inside there are statues of the great man at various stages of his life. Outside the tomb is a very large bronze bust of Lincoln, and so many people have rubbed his nose for good luck (which is encouraged) that his nose is lighter and shinier than the rest of his head. I definitely recommend including this site on your trip to Springfield. read more

This is a very interesting state landmark and was incredible to see and I do recommend seeing it. I am basing this review on staff's interaction with guests. The Karen that was there was rude and condescending. We did not expect that attitude until until we arrived in Chicago. Great work ruining an otherwise amazing area! read more

While I agree that its a bit weird to say "Woo hoo!" to a burial site, I really do think this is one of the best of its kind. I hadn't been since my 6th or 7th grade field trip and this year I got to go with about 200+ 8th graders. That being said, I was seeing it with new eyes, while reminiscing. I think the rangers did a great job to get the history out to the kids. I would have liked a little more guidance and viewing of the surrounding grounds but our time was limited. I totally think this was still worth the visit however...its things like rubbing Abe's nose that you remember all those years later! read more

Very peaceful and respectful place. I got to rub Abe's nose for luck and take a nice stroll around the grounds. His actual tomb is really fascinating. I was impressed by the stone work and all the bronze statues that are placed everywhere. I talked to the rangers at the entrance and asked if the area around his tomb was going to be fixed, mainly because of the degrading trim and some paint issues. They said a full restoration was scheduled for the end of the year. I would recommend seeing this place to anyone who want to see the place where one of the most important people in our history is laid to rest. (One interesting note, there are 48 polished stars around the inside ceiling that represent the 48 states at the time of his death.) read more

If you are interested in history and are in Springfield looking for sites to visit that are related to Abraham Lincoln put this stop on your list. Very well maintained and very humbling. There is also a flag lowering ceremony that is held on certain days and if that works into your schedule you should attend check the website for times for the flag lowering ceremony. read more

Beautiful grounds, impressive tomb. Mary and two of their three boys are also entombed here. Rub Abe's nose at the entrance for good luck!

Amazing way to pay tribute to Mr. Lincoln! Beautiful works throughout the monument! Don't forget to walk behind the monument and see the room where Lincoln's body was held. BE SURE TO RUB HIS NOSE! Great time. read more

This is a fast free stop on your way through Springfield. It was a nice wrap-up of our Lincoln tour. The parking is free and plentiful, that's a nice short walk to the monument. Walking through the monument you see different Bronze Statues and the place where Lincoln is entombed. His three sons are also entombed there as well as his wife. It's just very neat to see. The statue on the outside of Lincoln has everyone rubbing his nose. His nose is all shiny copper. It's kind of neat. read more

Quick stop on the route to wherever you're headed next. It's very honoring of President Lincoln. Don't forget to check out his original tomb, his law office partner and the governor of IL gravesites while you're here. Probably about 30-45 min total is all you need. read more

My son and his class had a field trip here for their end of the year trip. The staff was friendly and interactive with the kids. The tour was very informative and I learned a lot of things about the tomb that I didn't know and I grew up in Spfld, Il. The trip was in may so the weather was ideal and there were a lot of other schools there on trips as well, even with all the different schools they didn't rush the students they let them explore the areas and answered all the questions the kids had. The thing that took the longest was the kids taking pictures one at a time in front of the Lincoln statue and rubbed his nose. read more

Amazing tribute to our 16th president, filled with symbolism. Down to the amount of vertical, decorative panels on the wall (16, as Lincoln was the 16th president), everything has deeper meaning. It is clear that architects put a lot of thought into this, and the result is beautiful. Our three guides each told us about a different section of the tomb, and I found it very interesting, especially the fact that all immediate Lincolns, except Robert, rest here. Overall a great place to learn about Lincoln and pay your respects. read more

Fitting memorial to a national hero. Nice choice of quotes memorialized on plaques located throughout the tomb. Family tree is interesting. Sad to learn no living direct descendants of Lincoln. Workers/caretakers of the tomb are passionate and loyal. While we were there a worker was caring to a single red rose in a vase that she said had "showed up the other day for Mary" (Lincoln's wife, also entombed there). read more

A lot of people are shocked when I tell them that Abe Lincoln rests in Springfield and not Washington, but it's true. Abe, Mary Todd, and 3 of their 4 sons are all at this immensely impressive monument and mausoleum. You can spend a long time just admiring the exterior before submitting to the solemnity of the interior. Statues, flags, marble, bronze, quotes, and tributes to the Union are all inside this monumental piece of art. read more

What can you say that is new: this is the site of one of the greatest pilgrimages in the US for the last many decades. To be in the presence of the remains of this mythical family leaves you speechless and touched. The atmosphere is maintained by the signs to remind you to be somber and respectful, there are many statues of Lincoln in his various guises over time. The graveyard itself is well maintained and has a treasure of famous IL folks as well. Don't miss the original tomb down the other side of the hill and the war memorials on the other side of the cemetery. I'm enriched for having done the Lincoln tour and visiting this affecting monument. read more

Lincoln's Tomb and War Memorial is very impressive and somber. A definite must see if you're in the Springfield area. When we visited we were very fortunate because a very nice docent was stationed in the inner Tomb area who was very knowledgeable and made the experience much more interesting. Be sure to rub the nose of the bronze Lincoln's statue outside as it's suppose to bring you good luck! We visited on March 15th, 2018. read more

A must if you're in the area. Beautifully landscaped cemetery and imposing monument to our past leader. You can walk through inside to view small statues of the president, the tomb which is about 10' over the president's resting place, and then the lapidary art for his family. I didn't realize one of his sons, his oldest, was actually buried in Virginia, at Arlington. Spectacular sample of American architecture and engineering, with very use of posh granite and marble throughout. read more

Historic monument to see the life of Honest Abe, read the Gettysburg Address, and see where he is buried, 10 feet underground. It's a walk in place, and you can also walk up the stairs on the outside to see the tower that stands over 100 feet. There are sculptures located there, which stand out to the whole monument. It's really interesting to look at it from a distance. Inside the walk-in room, there's many things about Abe's life, as well as his role as president during the Civil War. Pictures, signs, and history notes are what is located in here, and I personally enjoy that as a history lover. The Gettysburg Address is written, as well as some other notes about his life. Finally, you can see where he is buried underground, as well as his siblings, in the crypts next to Abe. I think this is really interesting to come by, if you're traveling to Chicago or St. Louis. It doesn't take very long to go through the tomb, but it will be worth your time. Outside the monument, make sure to rub his nose for good luck. At the end, there's a gift shop where one can buy merchandise, so come on by and check it out. read more

When my friend said 'visit the tomb', I thought she meant go to the grounds and have a walk around. I had no idea that you could go inside, walk around, see sculptures, read about the legend, take pictures, see his actual tomb - it's amazing, it's awe-inspiring, it gave me goosebumps. It's free, so that's good, though there should be big collection boxes everywhere cause it's awesome in the true sense of the word. I told my hubby I wanted a tomb just like that when I die, he just laughed at me. I'm serious, it's epic. GO! read more

Lots of history. During the summer, they have actors who give soliloquies regarding what they heard and saw when Lincoln's body was brought to town to be buried. They also answer questions regarding Lincoln's burial. They also have a volunteer brigade on Tuesday evenings in the summer. They play music, shoot their rifles, fold the flag, and give the flag to someone in attendance. Something that's also neat is that there are people dressed up as people from that time period. His whole family is buried here except his oldest son. I learned that people tried to steal Lincoln's body so they buried him deep underground and covered the sarcophagus with cement so this could no longer happen. I saved this stop for last on my trip here and almost didn't get to see Lincoln's tomb but because of the summer events, they let people in for a few minutes after the flag folding ceremony. I was so glad! I would have been so upset if I didn't get to see his tomb and pay my respects. We walked through really quickly so I didn't get really good photos because there were so many people. The lighting is really dark so I would recommend taking your time if you want to get good quality photos. Everything was accessible except for the soliloquies which were behind Lincoln's tomb where the holding vault is. This is where his body was originally placed. We had to take the car to get down there. There might have been a way to get there by wheelchair but it would have been a long, round about way. There are stairs that take you directly there for people who can walk. I was a little bit confused about this but there is a little stake in the hill behind the tomb on the way to the holding vault where I think he was buried for some time while the monument was being built. I picked up on this from a question someone else asked. The architecture itself is really beautiful. I'm amazed that human hands built it. Viewing the tomb is free. There is parking right by the tomb as well as restrooms. There is a war memorial by the entrance further away from Lincoln's tomb. It has an eternal burning fire and bells that chime. One thing that I learned about after we visited Springfield is that there are other notable people from Springfield who are buried here, such as Lincoln's law partner Herndon. Next time, I will visit his grave too. I heard that you can ask for a map at the office but they may charge for this. Be sure to rub his lucky gold nose in front of the monument! read more

What a blessing to have had the opportunity to visit Lincoln's Tomb. I'm glad I had the opportunity to pay my respects to an American Icon who was both blessed and cursed at the same time - to have lost in so many areas of his life only to have become one of the most celebrated historical figures in the world for his greatest achievement of keeping this great nation together and moving forward. So on to the review - The monument itself is brought to life with statues of Lincoln and other statues representing the different branches of the military at the time. The exterior of the tomb is really heart stopping. I stood in awe for quiet sometime appreciating the magnificence of the monument and appreciating the quietness of the surroundings. I then walked inside and was greeted by another statue of Lincoln which is my favorite of them all. Once inside you can begin the tomb tour - which is a circular path and throughout the path their our additional statues of Lincoln as well as copies of a few of his speeches. The tomb itself is just unbelievable and important to note that his wife and children (except for his oldest son) are also all buried here with Lincoln. Before you leave, you will have the opportunity to visit the temporary resting places where Lincoln's body was held as they prepared or updated/remodeled the permanent resting place, it was also very neat to see these sites. They will tell you about it. I had the opportunity to walk through the interior of the tomb with a group of students and one of the tour guides and really enjoyed listening to what the tour guide had to share with all of us. Lastly, it is free folks! The staff does an excellent job talking about Lincoln and his life and answering any questions you may have about the Great President's life. Do yourself a favor and visit this site. read more
