My daughter has Down syndrome, needs instruction to develop better focus, discipline, physical agility, and most importantly community and inclusion. The time that Miss Liz spent with myself and my daughter has become absolutely invaluable, as she opened her arms (literally) and excepted my daughter fully and completely without any hesitation, something that does not happen often enough in our world with children and people who have disabilities. We moved to the Murray Hill area in 2001 and have been part of this community ever since. In January 2008 our little angel was born at 23 weeks and four days, making her the second lightest child to survive at Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital. She has struggled and I have fought the local school district for inclusion, have been to mediation trials, as well as a due process hearings and have won all hearings through the courts; yet, the school district continues to not include her in the mainstream environment. To have her accepted and embraced by Ms Liz, again is highly unexpected for a parent of a child with a disability. I will forever be indebted to Murrayhill Martial Arts for their openness and willingness to fully accept, embrace and include my little angel in their community. Very grateful father.

I like that this martial arts teacher allows for flexibility with when the kids attend. You don't…read morehave choose between TTH and MW. You can do MT or MTH if that works better for you. Or you can do MTWTH if you're able. The teacher seems skilled in martial arts and is good at commanding respect from the kids. He should hire a receptionist though, because sometimes he can't teach the class (which is already short at 45 minutes) because he's hung up with talking to a parent who has a question or needs to pay for something. Before you sign up, be sure to ask what all these additional fees will be. It's not just $165 a month. Each belt test costs more money, there's more than one weapon to buy, sparring gear which is about $400, and a new blue uniform you're forced to get after the white one has only been worn a few months. And if you want to cancel, you have to notify three months in advance, and I guess still continue to pay for those three months whether your child attends or not. Another complaint I have is that it seems like the kids are advanced to the next belt levels too quickly. The tests to go to the next level are too easy. Some kids fail at something (like board breaking for instance) multiple times in a row, and are still allowed to get their next belt. This issue is likely true of not just this place, but all American martial arts places, which care more about protecting children's self-esteem than actually ensuring they have mastered the skills. In my opinion, it would be better if the kids had to stay at a belt level for a year each, rather than being rushed to black belt in 3-4 years just so the kids can brag "I'm a black belt!" without being able to win a fight. Two belt levels later, the kids have forgotten the forms and moves they learned two belt levels ago. Review of old moves would be nice. Does a black belt only know black belt moves? Do they still remember what they learned as a white belt, yellow belt, orange belt, etc.? The kids are also expected to memorize several words and phrases in Korean, which is difficult to do when the kids are all shouting out their possibly incorrect pronunciations at once. I think it would help them learn if the words were written out on a black/white board or displayed permanently on a wall poster, written both with the correct spelling and the phonetic spelling (because some of these words are not spelled the way they sound), so kids can see what they're saying instead of just imitating the kid next to them. Each individual kid should have to say the words so the teacher can hear their mistakes and correct them. It's impossible to hear who is saying what when they all shout at the same time.

It's been an honor to witness his passion and skill over the last few months. With his encouragement I've grown in strength, stamina, flexibility, and confidence. Now I'm addicted! His ability to connect with children and inspire them to do their best is phenomenal. My children have also learned so much in the short time they have been taking lessons here. They are more disciplined and respectful, and I'm so proud to see them have a goal to improve their skills. This place feels like a second home. Horrible, horrible service. I signed two children up for what was advertised on a Facebook event…read morefor a Nerf Gun party. However, this was anything but a party. In fact, it was far from it. Upon arriving, the older children were very rude. They were hollering orders to the other incoming kids, not setting a nice tone at all. The owner, was also very rude as well. He barely smiled and was more like a military militant if anything. All of this should've been my first inclination to not drop off the kids. But since I already paid, I thought they may have some fun anyway. Nonetheless, upon picking up the kids, they explained to me how horrible of a time they had. They rarely got to play with Nerf guns, instead one of the older girls made the kids all watch a movie. I mean, who puts kids in charge of other kids? It's supposed to be a fun-filled party right? WRONG!! The boys told me they were hit and get this when the owner called my son's friend the wrong name. When the child let the man know his name was incorrect he said: Mike, Max, whatever, it's all the same. How rude and condescending! I called the place of business to speak with the owner and no one answered. I then sent him a message through Facebook and he denied any and all claims. Attended a few training sessions at their much reduced "teaser" rate. They REALLY pressure you to sign up for an annual, pretty non-breakable contract. Their monthly contract cost is pretty high considering that 99% of the training consists of exercises that I can do all by myself... such as running around the perimeter of the gym, playing jump rope, pushups, situps and so on. I signed up for this training because I wanted to learn something about Korean martial arts but that training was never forthcoming. Almost all of the students are young kids. Some VERY young. I was easily twice as old as the next oldest student. If you're a parent and don't mind paying $100/mo to send your kid to a PE-oriented day care center, then this could be the place for you. But if you are an adult looking for intensive martial arts training you may well find the curriculum here disappointing. Bottom line was that I felt I was paying a LOT of $$$ for "training" that just wasn't worth the fee. If all someone wants is an intensive PE workout, there are gyms around that charge in the $10-$15 per month range for that sort of service. I would have given this place one star except that it probably is a good venue for kids who have parents with unlimited funds.

When I was 17, I was touched inappropriately/in a sexual way by one of the masters here during a training. While many students witnessed it, the master faced no disciplinary actions. The company refused to share CCTV footage, so the situation was unable to be escalated. Do not send your daughters here. My parents spent around $20,000 on my tuition here, because I was a student for more than ten years. We were disgusted with what happened.
