The company was formerly called "Marple-Newtown Players" but they are now called "Spotlight Theater" and they are now located in Swarthmore, PA at the Swarthmore United Methodist Church, on Park Ave. I was introduced to this company in 2013, just after they made the transition from Newtown Square to their new home in Swarthmore. I was attracted by their selection of plays, with intriguing & thoughtful subject matter. I love that the season roster boasts very few of the obvious crowd-pleaser choices, but even then, far more unobvious than the stream of musicals at Players Club of Swarthmore (we prefer Second Stage there). I am impressed with the theater set-up in the basement of the church, which is very well done as far as similar set-ups we've experienced. Phila Shakespeare Co is in a church with a similar feel. Their set-up is more grand, but they have a big budget over there. The Inis Nua Theatre Company (Off-Broad Street Theater) is also in a church, First Baptist Church near Rittenhouse. Footlighters theater in Berwyn too, is in a former church. Several years ago, we saw the Bryony Lavery play, "Frozen," there, and one of the actors read his part, which was a little distracting and frustrating. I don't know if it was done for effect, or if there is something I missed? I feel like I can normally catch when something is meant to be done for effect or not, and it just seemed like the actor was the understudy (which was not so according to the program), or considered himself too cool to learn his lines? Nonetheless, we enjoyed the play, as we had the others we'd seen prior at Spotlight, but the performance of that one actor could have been better, as far as we are concerned. After that, we bought a year's subscription and of course some crisis seemed to happen every bloody time we planned to go to a performance, so we ended up giving away almost every single ticket. So, LOL, I recommend the subscription if you don't have terrible luck in life! It will save a lot of money over the regular ticket price (unless you get them through Philly Funsavers, which is a great deal!). I haven't been for a little while, but normally they offer a raffle each time, and tons of homemade refreshment options. They are super welcoming when you enter, and they do a great job of introducing each play, etc. It is a well-run machine, especially for local theater standards.
