Yay!! The first to write a review for the Dutch!! No pressure…read more.. It was my first week in Italy, about 7 years ago. My ex and I were strolling down a narrow alley and came upon this pub, The Dutch. The bartender was young with barely tamed long hair and an excellent grasp of English. We pulled up stools, ordered a strange red beer called Affligem and struck up a conversation. About the 12th time we asked him to translate something for us, he breaks out the largest dictionary I have every seen and not-so-politely tells us to look it up. We were hooked. The Dutch became our hangout for the next 2 years. But alas, all good things must come to an end... I just returned from a trip to Gaeta, my first in awhile. The Dutch is timeless. Many things are the same as they were...the quality food and drink, the warmth of the owners (it's a Mother/Father/Son enterprise), the regulars--both Italian and American. There were also a few upgrades...wi-fi, wii, a multitude of absinthe varieties and ravioli night! Not your normal raviolis, mind you. It's mama's recipe and these suckers are BIG...2 are the same size as a small plate, filled with meaty, cheesy goodness. Yeah, baby. So enough reminiscing, already... The Dutch Pub focuses on fresh, authentic food in a fun, pub atmosphere. Pizza, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, seafood, soups, dutch food (with 24-hour notice)...the menu is pretty robust for a small pub. Much of the produce is from a local garden. Dough is made fresh daily. Even the sandwich buns are house-made. To the bar. The draught beer is pretty unique for the area--Affligem, Wicske Wheat, Murphy's Stout, and of course, Heineken. They have a large menu of shots, and like I mentioned earlier, several varieties of absinthe. And they serve Illy Coffee, yum. The best thing is that The Dutch is thriving even through the recession...just means they'll be around the next time I visit too!! Thanks Yvonne, Rino and Maurizio!!

What a gem! This place is great. My buddy and I were welcomed in and sat right away. The…read moreatmosphere is what you want in a pub. Good music, a large selection of good beers, and everything on the menu sounded tasty. We got the bruschetta roulette for a starter. The flavor was good and one of them had a surprise habañero tucked in there. I wound up picking that one. Wow! Quite the punch. Then got a super spicy burger and a super burger. They were delicious. You may not find this place unless you're walking down the alley, but I highly recommend stopping in if you get the chance.

OK. Perhaps I'm being a little "cheap" with the two stars. But even if it were an option, 2.5 would…read morebe the best I could do. Now, my cheeseburger was quite decent by Italian standards (thin, unseasoned patties, loads of ketchup and mayo). As was the husband's plate-sized Maxi Cheeseburger (220g of "authentic" American cuisine). Our server was polite, the canned coke was cold, and the glass brought with it already had ice in it (shock!). We were offered espresso on the house after settling the tab, and while it wasn't the best, the gesture was appreciated. Everything else was a bit downhill. First, there's the location. Vertigo's located on the first floor of Centro Commerciale Megalò. As such, the atmosphere's a bit hectic, even inside the restaurant. The decor is... well, honestly it's awful. 'Spruced' up since this photo was taken Vertigo is now surrounded by a prop castle wall, and loads of fake ivy. Truly, it's like you've entered the worst renaissance festival anywhere. Ever. The interior is slightly less offensive. The largest wall showcases a mural that was inspired it would seem, by a 1940's edition of The Brother's Grimm. I think is supposed to portray the Irish countryside. But really it's just creepy. The interior does not have many tables and the three largest booths are against the wall, staring directly at the back of the television screen. Our booth was sticky from lack of a proper wipe-down between customers. As mentioned the server was polite, and our food arrived promptly enough. That is except for the chips. Those arrived (slightly undercooked) when we'd almost finished our burgers. The menu is simple and unimaginative. Completely standard 'pub grub' for around these parts. Burgers and hot dogs, a large selection of primi (mostly basic pasta dishes). It could literally be the exact menu for about 50 other places in the region. The bar is the nicest feature of Vertigo. The bar top's a bit crowded with coffee paraphernalia, making it an awkward place to enjoy a pint, though obviously it's perfect to take a coffee. If that's what you're into- in an Irish pub. Sadly the bar is completely wasted, since the portion dedicated to draught beverages TOTALLY LACKS a single offering from the Emerald Isle. None. Not one. Not even a British lager or a French stout or SOMETHING to try and make up for it. It's the same, standard stuff you find on tap EVERYWHERE around here. We paid EUR20 for two adequate cheeseburgers (true, one WAS the size of a Frisbee), a small side of chips, a can of coke and a small beer. It was a ripoff. The only thing Irish about Vertigo is that it shares its name with a song by U2.
