I signed up for a Pottery Studio Class at KCN. I was told by the counter person the class was 4…read moreweeks at $40 after taking my Credit Card Pmt. and it included clay. The Pottery Volunteer Teacher (Rosie) was in the room after I signed up that day. I told her I had some clay to start. Rosie asked what clay (^10) I use and then "she offered" to go to Crane Yard to get me more. I used what I had one afternoon and waited...2 weeks later, I wrote note to Rosie about the status of my clay purchase she offered to buy, she wrote back, "the Art Teacher (Paige) said "KCN CC only buys clay for the Kids Classes but she would pro-rate my time when I went and purchased my clay." After seeing my ability to use the Potters Wheel I was asked by Rosie to come in on a Tues Evening and demonstrate for her (Rosie's) class. I showed up that evening and made 3 pots for her class. I've been a Potter/Art teacher for 40 yrs+, all I wanted was a place to create for my 4 weeks. For some reason I was told I could only be there when Rosie or Paige was there. I had seen others working in the Ceramic's room alone but I was asked not to be there. So I came in when Paige was in her room and before working said to her "I was there and asked if it was ok to work?." and I was allowed to work. Rosie told me they were having problems affording the glazes and asked if I have ever made glazes. "Yes, and I have recipes to do that." The subject came up when I was talking to Paige. She said "she knew nothing about it." I said, "it would be a great chemistry lesson for her students". She said it's not for her, and said they had 2 more cabinets of chemicals to make glazes and pointed the cabinets out . I was working and later when I was ready to go, after Paige left (Yes, knowing I was there she left and asked me to turnout the lights) I looked in the 2 cabinets to see what they had, if I decided to make glazes. I even took out a box of feldspar to see what kind it was. Rosie came in and practically accused me of stealing supplies. I told her what I was doing and that Paige told me about the glaze making supplies in the cabinet. After listening to Rosie "go off" for awhile. Rosie asked again if I could help make glazes for the KCN CC kids class. I said "I've taught your class and now you and Paige want me to make glazes". I said "I wanted to be compensated by having studio time". Rosie said "NO" guess my expertise isn't worth compensation. I quit coming in..... but I had Clay (35#) I purchased and I had 2 days left on my 4 weeks so I went in to finish using my Clay. I told Paige I was there and wanted to work, she said. "NO" we've had problem with you and would like you leave. I told her the issues I had with Rosie and what she assumed I was doing, after listening, Paige allowed me to work only while she was there. I finished up. 1. Clay has it's own timing! If it dries or is not monitored regularly it a waist of time. This place KCN CC is the only Ceramic facility I know of that is not open to work/monitor your projects, but only on their staff's time frame. 2. KC North CC is NOT an Environment to create in. I felt like a thief and someone is always making decisions on what I do on their time frame. 3. Rosie is very novice in her abilities to teach both hand building and wheel throwing. That's what you are paying for. 4. I gave it 2 stars b/c they have the facility, wheels, tools, and even a Raku Kiln but no-one to teach. If you are a KC beginner go to the KC Clay Guild or Crane Yard and they have good teachers. Kent W. 2-15-18

We absolutely love Excelsiors community center - especially because our town doesn't have one. It's…read morea short 10 minute drive and we're thankful that you don't have to be local to get the same great pricing as everyone else! There's plenty to do and the included child care is amazing and ran by a great staff of ladies! My only wish is for a sauna!Everything is kept clean and nice - it's a wonderful addition to Excelsior!

The community center was a great addition to the city and surrounding areas as well! It is kept up…read morevery nicely, and there are plenty of employees around to help you whenever it is needed. My only complaints are not about the center, exactly. Rather, the operations. One issue is that the hours suck. Some of us work crazy hours and need a 5:00am option SEVEN DAYS A WEEK and we are also the same people who need a 9:00 closing option seven days a week as well. I understand the chances of this becoming 24 hours are extremely slim, but, in a perfect world, that would happen. Also, maybe more class instructors? I love yoga and barre, but as I mentioned, my hours vary and only offering barre once a week at 10:00 isn't fair to the many members who would like to see this offered at other days/times. All around, I love being a member and enjoy my time each day. I just wish the hours were better (seriously, extend the weekend hours!!) and the class options were a little more understanding.
