Café Zoîde is a philosophically outstanding play space for kids with a small café for adults. It is an association, and parents and kids who are members are encouraged to participate in helping manage every aspect of the café. The woman who opened it specifically focused on creating a space to support the lower income families in the area, and she's done amazing work. For just 2€ per day, kids have access to a full range of activities (music, art, etc.), a large-ish play space, and can even eat (vegetarian!) lunch together (additional, but low cost). The first floor is the café and kitchen where you can get drinks (no alcohol, mint tea for only 1€) and small snacks. Upstairs is the play area. This place draws a distinctively granola crowd. It's not a sip tea while your well-behaved and meticulously-groomed child plays quietly in the corner type of place. It's a full-on PLAY space. Prepare to be overwhelmed your first time. It's loud and crazy. Things are going on all day long and you feel like you've joined a giant family as soon as you walk in the door. Just go with it, step outside and look at the canal (or go down to Bar Ourcq) when you need a breather, and head back in for more fun when you're ready.
Note that the café has been closed for renovation since January 2013 and as of this review has not yet re-opened. Their website says they will re-open in May 2013.
