This will be two separate but equally favorable reviews for the hotel and the restaurant.
Hotel: I planned to stay here for two nights but had to leave after the first night due to a severe toothache, which required care before the Bastille Day holiday weekend. I booked the junior suite, which was large and well furnished. The bed was extremely comfortable and the shower was wonderful. My only complaint is that it was an odd mix or 5 star and two star. For example, we did not have any tissues in the room and instead of glasses in the bathroom, there were plastic cups wrapped in plastic. Because I had to leave early, the owners took off the price for the dogs.
The grounds are lush, vast, and beautifully landscaped. It is a former flour mill and there is a small waterfall and river that runs near the hotel and restaurant. You can hear it from the room. It is owned by a charming couple who did everything to ensure that we had a nice stay, including providing me with dog bowls, which I had forgotten. The young gentleman who was the server at dinner also helped us with our bags was friendly and very helpful.
If you are a bird lover, this is the property for you. There are hundreds of parrots and budgies of differing varieties, as well as some peacocks. It has become a bird sanctuary of sorts.
Prices are very reasonable.
Restaurant: I ate here for dinner and had breakfast as well. The food is stellar. For dinner, there were two amuse bouches: 1) a zucchini custard with a small amount of tuna; 2) "American calamari" which was a spicy tomato sauce. For an appetizer, I had duck and scallop tartare, which finger lime pearls and caviar, with a wasabi cream sauce. It was one of the tastiest things I have eaten in a long time. For my dinner, I had lotte (a/k/a monkfish), which is one of my favorite things. It was served in a curry sauce and perfectly cooked vegetables. Dessert was rosemary shortbread served with apricot ice cream, rosemary ice cream, and apricot custard. Very pretty and tasty.
The owner is the chef and he is very talented. I also appreciated how respectful they were to find substitutes for my husband who can't eat shellfish.
All of this was 57 euros per person. I think it was the best value meal I have ever had. read more
