This cemetery is so haunting...my sister and I often take a picnic lunch and eat, read and relax there. The cemetery is so old that you are not going to offend anyone. My only concern is that between the last time I was there several years ago and this year (2016) the cemetery has become terribly overgrown. A tombstone to a famous person who was involved in the Revolutionary War in the US had disappeared entirely, I hope for restoration or preservation. The grass was terribly high and it was hard to get to some gravesites. I hope this will be remedied, because this cemetery is an absolute treasure.

On my last day in Freiburg I decided to just hop on the first tram that arrived, do some…read moresightseeing and let it take me wherever it did with no special goal in mind. Suddenly I saw an impressive stone gate on the left that reminded me of a cemetery so I decided to hop off and explore. Visiting cemeteries when travelling in Europe is such a treat since they're often beautiful and full of interesting monuments, tombs and statues (of which I have a phobia, but at the same time is really fascinated by...) as well as being lovely, peaceful places for contemplation. My life partner (who suddenly passed away earlier this year) and I always made sure to visit cemeteries when we travelled so it was quite emotional and special to find this cemetery by chance here. As it was the first day that was really gorgeous during this autumn week, intense blue skies, accompanied by lurid colours of red, orange and yellow the walk between tombs, monuments and gravesites was made even more special. I ended up on a bench in the sun crying my eyes out for half an hour or so, which felt appropriate in so many ways as well as liberating. That I ended up on that bench, at that cemetery, that day, on a significant trip to Schwarzwald. I don't think that was a coincidence. Or rather, coincidences are life's little messages to tell you you're not alone. Beautiful cemetery, more than well worth a visit and a walk whether you're mourning or not.
