I stayed at Les Cabines du Portage for three nights this summer for a family reunion. The compound features four two-bedroom cabins and six small cabins. We were in one of the single cabins, which had a small bathroom and a main room with a small table and chairs, two double beds and a kitchenette. Having access to a couple of burners, a miniature fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and some dishes made eating easier. The larger cabins have full kitchens. There are also three charcoal barbecues available for use. The cabins were clean and well kept - nothing fancy, but I felt comfortable staying there and the service was excellent. The ladies working in the office were always happy to recommend a restaurant, show us how to set up the BBQ or make a call for us.
There are lots of picnic tables and plenty of room for kids to run around, with a huge field behind the cabins. With so much room, it might have been nice if there had been a few more amenities available - maybe some soccer nets, or a badminton net or a small playground or something.
The location here is great - located in Cheticamp, you can see the water (it's across the street - but a cliff, no beach) and walk or drive to most amenities. A small coffee place is down the street, the golf course is right next door, and Cheticamp has a pharmacy, NSLC, grocery store and several restaurants. There are also horse stables, kayaking, whale watching tours and other fun family activities nearby. It's a beautiful spot with lots of hikes and other things to do, and I easily could have stayed longer than three days and enjoyed myself.
If you're looking for walkable access to the beach this place isn't for you (it's a bit of a drive, which can be frustrating) but it's clean, affordable and met my basic needs. read more
