There are other places that sell malasadas on the Island but had to try the most famous one. Luckily the line up was not that long and the wait was about 20 mins to get some freshly made Portuguese sweets. A malasada is a Portugese doughnut without a hole. Fried until it's golden brown on the outside and light & fluffy on the inside. At the shop, there are a total of 9 choices: 3 sugar coated with no filling and 6 with fillings. The monthly special filling for October is pumpkin. I tried the original sugar coated and one filled with coconut. You have to eat it when it's freshly made and still warm. Not as good when it has cooled down. One of my friends thought they were too sweet so only able to eat one. My other friend, on our last day, took a half a dozen on the plane. It's so popular that the Waikiki Trolley has Leonard's on it's yellow line (Known as the food line). We had a car so we were able to go before noon and before the rush. To get the malasadas, you have to get into 3 lines: one to order, one to pay and one to pick up when your order number is called. There are a few bench seats outside the shop. Most stand to eat while leaning slightly over to prevent the sugar or fillings falling on their clothes. Make sure to bring wet wipes to clean up afterwards as the sugar coating sticks to your hands. Just as hot and tasty as I remember of the original Honolulu location but without a wait. My husband has family spread out in the island, and this was on the way to visiting one family member when we left Ko Olina to head to Aiea. Ordering was easy and I received my hot and tasty malasadas within a minute or two. I did get a couple custard filled ones, but just like my first time, I still liked the original sugar coated ones better. A nice hack if you want to avoid the crowd and long lines from the main store! There wasn't a line to order and we ordered quickly. We ordered 5-6 items. But...there were a lot of people waiting for their orders. It did take about 20 minutes for our orders to come out. Whereas the main location would take 2-3 min for the malasadas to come out. Me personally, I like the original and cinnamon sugar malasadas. Not a huge fan of the custard, but am told they are delicious as well! A bit dense though. Although the wait is a lot longer, the malasadas are piping hot! They seemed to be cooked a bit longer as well. At first, the color wasn't as appetizing, but it did taste a bit less oily, and still had a yummy bite :) Parking in the plaza. Hasn't been an issue. read more

Leonard's!!! This is a must-try for everyone!! Their puffs are $2/each or you can buy half/full dozen for a better deal. The line is long (took about 40 minutes) on a Sunday morning but once I placed my order, my puffs were out in 7 minutes. Skip the chocolate. Perfect malasadas! Sadly, there were only six flavors currently available likely due to covid. I got my fix with a sugared malasada two weeks in a row and then a dobash the third week. The dobash tasted like hot cocoa, good, but not how I remembered. My tastebuds must have changed since then. I'll have to get another before I leave since I'm not currently living here or take a couple with me! These are best eaten fresh, so get them fresh everyday and not a dozen for later! read more

Here it is, King Kamehameha Day (Tuesday, June 11th)...my brother's family and I were craving for a few nights to have some malasadas from Leonard's Malasada mobile truck in Waikele and so I finally decided to get it this morning. As they open at 6am, I left the home about a few minutes thereafter and arrived there about 6:12am...I was thinking as this was a holiday, there would be a line of early customers but to my surprise, there was just one female customer waiting for her malasadas ---that was it ---no one else in sight from when I arrived to the time I left. As I read my order to her, I told her that i wanted 2 boxes of 6 donuts each: 2 original, 2 cinnamon sugar and 2 custard. In the other box, I told her 2 cinnamon sugar, 1 li hing, 1 dobash, 1 haupia and 1 custard. Total for the 12 donuts (7 non filled and 5 filled) totaled $18.17. About 13 minutes later, the 1st box was being closed off and she was assembling the second box. She put it into a package so that it would be easy for me to carry to the nearby car in the practically empty parking lot. Getting home, the 6 pack for my brother's family was correct but as I finished eating my 1st donut (the li hing which by the way wasn't sour at all --know that us locals know it would taste more sour than that, but it wasn't---so pleasantly surprised by its taste that it works with the sugar on the malasada), I went diving looking to eat a malasada with filling. After opening two more without any sight of fillings, I was getting a 'little' upset. I got REALLY upset when all 5 other malasadas were torn open and my 3 supposedly filled ones were just plain cinnamon sugar. My box consisted of 1 li hing and 5 cinnamon sugar ! I was fuming by now...thinking to write a very bad review or drive back to the truck...decided what good would it do to write a bad review as I didn't live that far away, and wanted the fillings anyway. So decided to drive back, reaching there about 6:55am. Luckily there were no customers, and I spoke to the female that took my order and showed her my box of torn up malasadas with no fillings and also showed my receipt. She apologized and said she would make the order once more ( I just thought I was going to get my 3 missing creme filled donuts and that was it) ...I thought, ahh that means I have to wait for about 13-15 minutes again...but it seemed they had already made some fresh malasadas (strange because all the other times I go to the main store or to a food truck, it was made only after the order was received) and she started filling the donuts with the creme fillings that I originally ordered (1 dobash, 1 custard, 1 haupia) along with the other 3 non-filled ones. Anyway, she apologized again and I went on my way home with a new batch in a new box, I left my old box with 4 torn up malasadas on the counter. Got home and did an inventory and found it was correctly done this time as I have the: 1 haupia, 1 custard, 1 dobash, 2 cinnamon sugar, and 1 li hing. Anyway, chewing into the exterior surface after having not eaten malasadas from Leonard's in some time, I noticed first thing that it had a crispy texture but the interior was nice and soft/pillowly as I remembered. Of the 5 different malasadas I had, here is the breakdown on the flavors: a) cinnamon sugar - winner, winner ! b) li hing - not as highly rated as the cinnamon sugar, but it works in its taste---but don't think I would personally get it again. c) haupia - watery in texture - is this how it should be? not thick as I had envisioned...not completely white as in other yelp photos but translucent and with a weak/subtle taste of coconut. d) dobash - doesn't work inside a malasada for me...the warm malasada made for a warm dobash filling, something I wasn't used to... just at the last moment, it tasted like it was a little sour...just a little...are they made fresh, or was this from the day before? I dunno... e) custard - rich taste, but artificial.... To sum it all up, I would stick with the original (as I took a bite from my brother's family box) or cinnamon sugar malasadas--those are 5 stars -- and those three crème filled ones were NOT to my liking (though out of those 3 crème filled, the custard tasted the best)...unless that was not how the haupia was to taste or look in texture. Beware..your order may not be made right...would you have gone back if you lived far away or saw that the line was way long if you returned with your wrong order ? Your trip to Hawaii is not complete without getting hot fresh malasadas. Got a dozen to take home back to LA (mix of original sugared, cinnamon sugar, Li HIng Mui dusted, custard and haupia (coconut custard filled). Not a fan of chocolate fillings but it's also available, supposedly there is a Taro option but it's not listed on the menu. Malasadas are soft and fluffy, not really doughy or chewy, NOT at all like a donut or beignet. The little food truck was parked next to the Petco, along with several other food trucks (none of which were open when we arrived at 9am). We were first in line then a crowd followed us soon after. There was a very sweet Japanese lady who was oohing and aahhing as she ate hers. Maybe for her IG feed and yes folks it's what i was doing as well. We went to the original Leonard's bakery but it was soooo packed. Luckily we found the food truck one. There was 0 wait when we went at -9:45 on a Monday. We ordered everything but the chocolate. I'm not a huge fan of coconut but my boyfriend tricked me into biting one and it's actually really nice! It's not overly powerful in a coconut taste. It reminds me of the coconut milk you find in southeast Asian dessert but more mild. My boyfriend prefers the filler over the unfilled. I don't really have a preference. However, I do believe these malasadas are hyped up. It was nice to try it out but I'm not a huge sweets person. read more

If you go to the brick and mortar there is always a wait so be prepared! I came on a Sunday morning and had to wait about 45 minutes but I hear the average wait is about an hour or two. If you go to their food truck there's significantly less people waiting. I only know because I found one by accident and needed seconds... I recommend eating these fresh because the ones we saved weren't as good as the ones we ate right away. Li Hing - Sweet and sour and delicious! Although Hawaii has delightful desserts Leonard's is the king of Hawaiian Malasadas which originated from the Portuguese however these are Hawaii's version of a donut. If you have never had them this is must try on a visit to the islands. Yes, you can get a classic malasadas which is similar to a plain sugar donut minus the holes. Each malasada is light and fluffy. My favorite and a dangerous box of haupia (coconut cream filled) somehow turns on the sugar tooth I never have once I land this is what I dream about. Don't judge me if you see me on the plane with a box of fresh malasadas to stuff my face on my way home. I do bite if you try to steal them so don't try. Other amazing flavors are Hawaiians guava custard, dobash (chocolate), cinnamon sugar, li hing and macadamia nut.
