Amazing what a little bit of persistent nagging to the council can do! Anyway! This park is located on Jaffrey and George Street and has all your standard new playground type equipment going on. This park is probably more big kid friendly however is still fine as long as you keep an eye on the littlest of youngsters. My favourite thing about this park is the shade provided over the playground, which is perfect for when you have forgotten your child's hat at home. The playground is also sectioned off, and the large green parkland around the playground is fenced off for when walking the dog. Overall a very decent and brand new playground/park. Approved by both dogs and children.

For one, it's hard to find but if you head along Fisher Street, it's nestled in at the back of the buildings. Secondly, there's not a lot of equipment. It does have an entirely rubber floor under the play equipment which is always nice. Although I didn't see any signs, I can't imagine dogs would be allowed in the fenced playground but there's plenty of room for them to run around on the lawn area beside the playground. Do you like a park that's a hidden treasure? Prefer to find a place that's tucked away from the…read moreview of the general public? Then Henry Codd Reserve on the corner or Maud and Windsor Streets at Parkside could be right up your alley. In terms of prettiness and quaintness, this park is just so sweet. I would describe it as a very private place as many of the houses in the area back onto the park and its tucked away from traffic. Both Maud and Windsor streets aren't high traffic areas which is good for the kids. The only thing to be aware of when it comes to traffic is there is a bike track through the centre of the park and a lot of people do come through - often at high speed. From the cyclists point of view it provides a great break from the George and Duthy Street traffic. Within the park itself there's an electric BBQ and newish play equipment for the kids. All the equipment is placed over padded matting to prevent injuries to those little arms and legs. I love the fact there's a modern but old fashioned looking seesaw in the park - you just don't see them that much these days. Given that this is a dog friendly park, there's a great water fountain with a bowl at the bottom for pooches to quench their thirst and there's a good supply of poo bags and bins for cleaning up after Fido! This place is worth a visit if you like tranquility and a pretty outlook.

However, community is all about sharing, right!? This Reserve is at the end Fuller Street in Parkside on the corner of Maud and Windsor Streets. It has a large grassed area, rotunda, barbecue and play equipment suitable for preschool through to junior primary children around the age of 10. The park is fully fenced and recently underwent a renovation nearby to extend the walkway from the reserve across George Street and Unley Road all the way to King William Road. This was previously a dirt track next to a drain, but has been turned into a natural reserve that is a pleasure to walk along and admire nature. The park itself has had quite a bit of controversy. The issue of dogs has been with Council for sometime. Apparently the locals are fighting about dogs being able to access the play equipment and potentially 'foul' on it. I don't have a dog and in the past five years have never seen any left droppings anywhere near the equipment. I imagine there just some disgruntled neighbours. If it wasn't for the local paper, I wouldn't even know about it. Dogs are very welcome - there is a drinking fountain with a bowl at the base for dogs to drink and doggie bags and a bin. The only thing missing is public toilets which would save us rushing home at the end of a play.

Parkside is full of parks (surprise, surprise) and the Campbell Road playground with its…read morebeautifully maintained expanse of grass is very popular with local families. The play equipment, while limited, is new (2010) and is great for preschoolers and junior primary kids. Their options include swings, climbing ropes, monkey bars, seesaw and a wobble/surf board. There is also a basketball hoop for older kids and the active young-at-heart and oodles of space to run and play ball games or kart wheeling. It's a lovely place to come with families and a portable barbecue and there are modern toilets on site. Very popular with local families who walk from the surrounding streets most often before or after dinner.

I guess it's fun for children during the day and a toilet bowl for cats at night? Even though the park is open planned, it is split up into two areas....an area for younger children and an area for older children but it's a short enough distance from both play areas to supervise children comfortably. This time of year the Jacaranda tree is a purply heaven against the manicured and maintained green lawn. This playground reminds me of the community gardens in suburbs of London. It's tucked away on a…read morequiet street and I imagine only the locals and the few lucky people to stumble onto it, come here. It's caters for all ages and can be a barrel of laughs for everyone if you encourage other parents to get on the big wheel and spin the kids around. While not fenced, there is very little traffic here, so your little ones are relatively safe. One thing to note, it's a great place for a birthday party. You just need to get permission from Unley Council to erect a marque in the case of extreme weather.

Accessed from either Fisher Street at Fullarton or Culross Avenue at Myrtle Bank, this park lies on the boundary between the two suburbs. Whereas a lot of parks are a bit dinky in size these days, this one is BIG with plenty of room for the kids (and the big kids) to run around in. Take the footy with you because this space is perfect for a game of kick to kick. Other facilities on site include tennis courts and an electric barbie. There's an abundance of shade and a playground with good equipment for the littlies. I like to take a blanket and a book and lie under one of the trees. Even though you're literally a stone's throw from a main road (Fullarton Road) you're actually pretty isolated from all the traffic noise which suits me just fine. The other thing that I like is the Fisher Street side is just across the road from a retirement village which I think is good for the residents and gives them a nice outlook even if there aren't too many of them out kicking the soccer ball around. Take note if you're not a dog person because this is a designated dog park. Pooches are allowed off their leashes in this park between the hours of 5pm to 10am. Outside of those hours they must be on a leash. And if you are a dog person - remember to be a poo picker upper or risk a fine from the council.

I grew up on Albert St, and as a child the Albert St Playground used to be my stomping ground…read more It has changed considerably since those days, the play equipment has been replaced from the old metal and rubber, to those padded plastic things that leave practically no possibility of harm to children. They have also removed a lot of the shrubbery and trees, which as I recall, we had a lot more fun playing in than anything else. The park is closed off by a nice white picket fence, which makes for a same environment. There is a stretch of grass which extends backwards towards the playground from the gate which serves for kicking balls or games of cricket, albeit on a small scale by small participants. There are a few old gums which have survived the cutback, situated towards the edges of park. All lower limbs appear to have been removed however, looks like the kiddies won't be doing any tree climbing.

Fern Avenue Reserve is a smallish but very cute park located in Fern Avenue at Fullarton. It's just…read moreup the street from the Fern Avenue Community Garden. What I like about this park is that the entire place is fenced on both sides which is good for little ones as they don't run the risk of dashing out in front of a car. Equipment wise, we love the big playground spider web which is great for climbing. There's a slippery dip and the equipment is surrounded with bark chips in case of falls. Trees provide plenty of shade and there's a big grassed area for ball games, frisbee throwing or non specific running around like crazy people. All in all it's a good park. It is fully fenced and under-utilised, so you'll often find yourself here alone or with one or two other children. Great if you like the area to yourself, not if your child is looking for others to play with. It is a lovely community area and I love sitting in the quiet, shady area while my little one plays and having the occasional chat with other locals. Great for pre-school and junior primary children.
