I am a lego fan, and have been to Legolands in Windsor (UK), California, Florida and Dubai. But when I was a child, there was only one Legoland, the original in Billund Denmark where Lego was created. So it was exciting to get to visit the original Legoland recently. We had our 2 year old son with us, but to be honest we were assuming that there would be no rides that he could use because he was too small. We were so wrong. Because he was over 90cm (~35.5 in) there were many rides he could ride with us, and even one that he could ride alone. He had a great time. Lines weren't long, but it took us almost all day to ride everything he could do once (with a 2 hour break for his nap). So the story of our Legoland Billund visit comes in two parts. Our son loved all the rides he could go on, especially those that let him feel like he was driving/flying/sailing a vehicle. And in the case, of the boat, he really was sailing - very badly. He had a great day, and I am sure we could have turned around, had another day and ridden everything again. There were a bunch of rides that needed 100cm height, but easily enough for a great day for a 2 year old who is over 90cm. The second part is my day. I had to squeeze Miniland (the part of the park with lego models) into his 2 hour nap. That was just enough time. Each Lego miniland has a different set of buildings. Denmark's are mostly northern European, with lots of things I had not seen at other Legolands. The park was not that full, because it was mid-May before tourist season starts, and the weather was not yet too hot. Lines were short, most things were open, but the park closed earlier than it does in high season. We had the lunch buffet, which was pretty bad frankly, but it did avoid wasting time waiting for food. Every other legoland I've done has a fried chicken place that was quite good, but this one did not. We stayed in the legoland hotel. It lots of nice lego touches, and was conveniently located. However, it did not get us very much other benefit (no early admission, late stay or anything else. Just cute. There were quite a few lego building zones (duplo or regular bricks), but we didn't have time to stop at any of those. There was lots of other stuff in town we wanted to do (especially The Lego House), but we only had one day in Billund. This was a great theme park experience, but if you are in a country near a Legoland, there is no need to come here - Legoland WIndsor or California are just as good, maybe better in some ways. But if you are near Denmark, this is a great park for kids under 10 and for adults whose Lego collection suggests that they think they are still kids :)

Last time I was here was sometime in the late 90's. What better year to return for the golden jubilee. Things have changed! I will say first of all this is more or less just another amusement park that is Lego themed. Lots of stuff is made of Lego but it's not necessarily overwhelming. My friend and I went with the intention of seeing as much as we could without overdoing it. Luckily, we got pretty lucky with the lines and waited no more than 30 minutes for the rides. The rides are often VERY SHORT, some being exactly a minute long. Most of the rides are pretty kid-friendly (meaning no crazy multiple loops or anything) but having said that I definitely had moments of vertigo during some of the turns. There are also lots of water-related rides, so it's great during hot summer days. Lego nerd, no matter how small or big.. this is a place you must visit.

    Heartlake city is my favorite!

How do I love Legoland? Let me count the ways! The park is big and exciting without being too big. There is something for all ages, but as it is geared towards the younger crowd the ambiance doesn't get rough or wild. The crowd control is amazing. Waiting times are posted and updated at each ride and the lines are well-organized and run smoothly. The staff is well-trained, enthusiastic and fun! Everyone speaks at least fluent Danish, English and German here. Many people speak Swedish and other languages as well! There is an open-minded international feel to the place. Rides are well spaced out. There are fascinating lego creations everywhere. Stores and other opportunities to spend money exist, but they aren't too aggressive. There are places to play with lego or duplo for kids (and adults). Food is definitely over-priced, even by Danish standards. But there are plenty of picnic tables. Do what the Danes do: bring a cooler with all your meals and drinks. This is my 5th summer coming here and it won't be my last!

For a 6 and 9 year old this is a perfect place to take them, especially if they are into Lego. Designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) the architecture is reminiscent of Lego while not being overt and in your face in execution. It's very balanced for somehwere to come as a kid and as an adult. Here are some tips and advice during your visit to Lego House: -There are playgrounds and photo-ops outside, The obvious ones are at the entrance but every floor has a cool little play area that is often empty you should check out. -You get a RFID bracelet you use to get your own personal creations and photos and they are available for 29 days online. The quality of photos isn't great but all the digital assets are very high resolution. -Check the calendar and make reservations like for the robot cafe, we were lucky to have a lego designer signing the day we went. -The basement is an amazing chronological history of Lego and worth checking out at opening.

Let's say, I have thought about what I would say about this place a few times, because I had been…read moreasked how my Denmark vacation was, and when it comes down to it, Lego House was certainly one of the highlights. If you like Lego, you will probably enjoy many aspects of this place. A cross between Museum and Experiential kid's centre, it has something for everyone. To be honest, as an adult, if you just spend the time to look at the walls, and all the nuanced things that are placed around the entire structure, you will need a couple of day so to soak it all in. The history is incredible, and the bottom level has all the dreamy bits and pieces of what is today, Lego... and the story of what was... when it first started. Plan a day or two, because as an adult, there is plenty to partake. If you have a kiddo, I recommend coming early, and kicking off doing some of the Stop Motion stuff, as well as the neat STEM flower planting stuff. Worth it? yes.
