I was going to get the work done with an upholsterer that I had used years ago for another vehicle, but they were no longer in business. I turned to Yelp and read through numerous reviews and felt that AB Auto Upholstery was right choice. I drove over and spoke with Abel, who I found very friendly and knowledgeable. He looked the area over, confirmed they could do the repair, quoted me a price, and even said that they would do the work on a Saturday. It took about 3.5 hours to repair the damaged area on my seat and it looks absolutely brand new. I am pleased with the quality of the work and how the color matches (keep in mind this seat has about eight years of wear, so the color is a tad brighter because of newness only). But the cushions themselves showed signs of poor workmanship, especially given the price point. Like, maybe I was literally his 3rd client, ever? Creepy, incompetent, and absolutely not seaworthy…read more I brought my boat cushions to Rynedesigns in Ocean Beach for a simple reupholstery job, thinking I was supporting a small, local business. What I walked into felt more like the set of a low-budget horror movie than a place of professional craftsmanship. The shop was filthy--strips of vinyl everywhere, half-smoked joints strewn about, and a weird, moldy funk that made me question how anything made there could ever go back on a boat. But the worst part? The owner. If you enjoy being cornered by a man who smells like old glue and asks if you "like the feeling of leather in the sun," then by all means, go for it. He talked about my boat like it was a woman he used to date. At one point he ran his hands over the old seats and whispered, "Yeah, she's got curves." I laughed awkwardly, thinking he was joking. He was not. Despite the nonstop weirdness, I went ahead with the job because I was in a time crunch. Huge mistake. The finished cushions looked like a DIY disaster. Uneven stitching, bubbling in the vinyl, seams pulling apart within a week. One of them wasn't even the right size. When I called to complain, he whined that "nobody understood his artistic vision" or some crap. Do not let this man near your boat, your cushions, or your self! The work is bad. The vibe is worse. If you value your boat--and your personal safety--go literally anywhere else. I genuinely regret ever trusting this creep with anything I own.
