It took me a really long time to sit down and write this review, as I have very mixed feelings…read moreabout my experience at little excellence. I didn't want to write it while the wound was fresh and I was still upset about what happened. Little excellence was my 2 year old daughters first school experience and she was going full time 3 days a week, with an extra hour of care in the morning. Everything went swimmingly in the beginning and she loved going there. November hit and the honeymoon was over. I got a call that my daughters face got scratched and that there was a mark on her face over a fight over a toy and that as a response my daughter put her mouth on the child as if she was going to bite him but did not leave any marks (as per the phone call message I received). This was our "first warning that she could be "kicked out". I did my part and printed books for both school and home on why we can't bite, as the school asked me to come up with a plan for her. I gave them strategies via email and in person on how to better help her especially before she gets frustrated. There was a second incident, where no one was able to tell me what exactly happened as it was during diaper changing time and there "was not enough staff to watch all the kids at that time". I was told my child had to leave the school as per their policy which I had no problem complying with, but when I asked to see the video so I could see what was happening so I could better help and see what was occurring before the incident, I never received a response. This cut me to my core as it was right before Christmas and my daughter had no idea she was about to be ripped from the only school she's ever known leaving us in a position to scramble for a school. Her last day was the Christmas party where the staff talked about how sweet my daughter was and how sad they were to see her leave, but it was difficult for me to hear as it was not our choice to leave. I do not dispute the school policy and them following the policy what I did not like was how it was handled. No one offered to help her work through this very normal unfortunate toddler behavior. No one allowed me to see how, when or why it was occurring via video. Needless to say we found a great school for our daughter and she is thriving there so much we increased her to 5 full days. Overall I feel like the school has very young teachers who need the time and experience to gain knowledge on how to intervene and teach students rather than resorting to expulsion. I am sticking with 3 stars because my daughter really did love going here and she always had a great time, in morning care she had no issues. Although the teachers were young they still need some more experiences to help them better intervene with toddlers in the future. This wasn't the school for us, but maybe it will be for others.

The school environment is unbelievably welcoming to both students and parents and we both felt at home there immediately. Parents are invited into the classroom (for entire class sessions!) regularly to share the school full experience with their children--there is absolutely nothing to hide at CHMS! The entire school is immaculate and gorgeous--classrooms are spacious with tons of natural light streaming in and they feature the children's artwork everywhere you turn. Also, the children have weekly yoga and music classes in addition to art! The teachers at Children's Harbor are all Montessori trained and go the extra mile on a daily basis; they do a wonderful job creating a child-centered atmosphere that really makes students look forward to each school day (even my daughter who was not at all the type to want to go to school in her two years of preschool before attending CHMS), and they individualize the work so that each child moves at his/her own pace and on the appropriate level. The students learn through play--just the way they should at this age. I truly feel that this makes the children really soar! My daughter's teacher takes her personality into account when working with her and this makes all the difference. My daughter didn't have much of an interest in letters at the start of the school year, but now she has mastered them and is reading and writing beautifully. I'm astounded! I really can't believe that she is getting a true Montessori education for FREE because they offer UPK (now known as "Pre-K for all"). I am a teacher and have taught UPK at both private and public schools and have worked at a local college as a supervisor of early childhood student teachers in many different pre-k classrooms. These experiences have allowed me the unique opportunity to gain an insider's perspective on pre-k, and I can honestly say from experience that Children's Harbor really stands out among Staten Island preschools. It's a bit of a drive for us, but I don't mind it all all because I am so confident that my daughter is getting the best pre-k education possible and that this experience will have long-term positive effects on her attitude toward education. Children's Harbor Montessori School is a true gem!

It had inconsistent staff , no activities , few toys , nothing on the walls, absolutely not stimulating in any way. So we decided to look for a change. The Staten Island JCC on Manor road has been amazing. Great security, a consistent and caring staff. An inviting room which designates play area with lots of appropriate toys . A nice outdoor play area. This day care is really everything you want for your child and you can leave them there with confidence. They really love and care about your child. My son was 7 months old when we started here. The only negative is that the infant day care is on the lower floor and there is no elevator. ( actually there is an elevator, that allows you to take a long way there, but it seems to be often in disrepair!! ) other than that , this is a perfect day care. Yes it is closed on several Jewish holidays, which coincides with the public school holidays most of the time. Don't hesitate to use this place for day care, they really care about your child. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Here are the reasons why I wouldn't bring my child here. When I first visited (2021 spring time) I went for an open play class. Upon walking in no staff is wearing a mask or asked for vaccination cards (FINE, I'll wear my mask and try to make sure my child isn't near other adults). The front desk person told me I could join the ending of a class (bubble time). So I went in and my child enjoyed the bubbles and crawled all over the place. Now here is where I am at fault. I didn't realize till maybe 20 minutes into my free play class that at no point at the end of the first class that they came in and rotated or cleaned the toys! So not only do they not clean between classes - they do not require anyone to wear masks (I am talking adults here, I don't expect children to wear masks). My child is still small that he is putting things in his mouth. Not to mention I saw older children doing the same. So these toys need to be either rotated or cleaned between classes. I called my husband to pick me up immediately. Forget about COVID! There is other viruses that can take out children! I recently tried to give this place another chance because they offered mommy and me classes. I called to see if they would at least require masks and they told me they don't and they don't look at vaccination cards. So that's a easy NO for me and I will not be going. I know I probably sound like a crazy mom right now, but I found other places on the island that when I walk in it smells like Lysol and they require adults to wear masks and be vaccinated. Very disappointed in Play Lala.

My daughter has been going to her since she was 1yr old and its always smiles when she is there. Im a hard working mom that works late hours so it was very comforting to know that during the summer my daughter was still able to get outside, go to the park, museum, movies, go get ice cream, go to near by park and play in sprinklers, and even bowling. This was only during summer because once Fall season comes back around it right back to academic business. I love that they have a lot of structure and routines to get all the kids ready for school. Her daycare is set up to look like a pre-school as they do their math, science reading and writing. She has awesome helpers that would come in if she needed a hand with the children. Super creative with activities like creating play-doe from scratch was my daughter' s favorite activity. She keeps the daycare super clean and really cares for all the children. I can go on and on about how great she is but to round it all up I just want to say I have no worries when she is in Talaya's care :)
