Since then, the owner Brad has continued to evolve his gym both in supplies, training style, and employees. They offer affordable 1:1 training as well as group fitness classes that are effective and efficient. As a trainer myself, I love their method of using drop-sets, heavy weights, and functional movement/cardio.

I also realized that it was one more excuse that I didn't need to avoid exercising. A long time ago, I had a really good experience with a Personal Trainer, and decided that was what I needed to do. I came across Retrofit Studio reviews here on Yelp, sort of accidentally. I liked what I read from the reviews & their website. I liked the idea of a private studio too. I called Brad & set up a consultation. There is no doubt that Brad loves what he does & wants every client to be successful. He spent a lot of time listening & talking to me about realistic goals, nutrition, and what to expect. He decided to set me up with Mark, one of his trainers. So far, I have had 8 training sessions with Mark. When Brad said he was a good fit for me, he was right! My sessions are 30 minutes, 2 times a week. By the time I leave, I am a sweaty mess! Mark challenges me, makes sure I have good form, and always encouraging. If I don't do it right, I have to do it again. Every session varies to work different muscle groups, especially the areas that are difficult to target. As hard as he makes me work, I'm never too sore to exercise in between our sessions. That is important to me because I need to do my part outside of our sessions. Mark checks with me regarding my diet and what I'm doing to reach my weight loss goals between our sessions. I always have fun training with Mark even when it's really difficult. The studio itself is great. It's very clean, doesn't smell funky like a lot of gyms (ha!), and a great variety of training techniques & equipment. There are a few cardio machines for client use before or after a session. Every trainer is always encouraging clients, whether it's their client or not. What about results? I started to feel stronger right away and continue to feel that way. I'm steadily losing weight & seeing the jiggle disappear! My muffin top is shrinking! I asked my husband if he noticed any changes. The poor guy looked at me with slight fear of answering the wrong way. ha! I wanted an honest answer. I don't expect fast results, but I am curious if the changes I see are noticeable to others. He said that he has seen a big change. He said I have been a lot happier since I started training with Mark. I wasn't expecting that answer & it made me realize I haven't felt that way about getting in shape (or trying to) in a long time. It sort of made me all verklempt! This is one of the best decisions I've made in a long time!

Multiply that by 100 if you are expected to perform physical tasks and feats of athleticism in front of others. If this sounds like you, you aren't alone. Please don't let that fear be the thing that stops you from walking in the door. We've all been there. We remember. And we are here to encourage you. Crossfit is INTENSE. You'll get a great full-body workout that builds strength, stamina, and improves your mobility. And it's FUN. If you come regularly you will experience results. Josh is the owner and so much more. He's also a kick ass coach and he does a majority of the programming. He keeps things spicy but all of the workouts are scaleable to your fitness level and ability. Josh is always encouraging and knows how to push you to be better, stronger and faster. If Josh is building an army, sign me up for the front line. The rest of the coaches are top notch as well. Chrissy, Heather, Cam, Phil, Marnie, JD, Shawn and Ali are all experienced athletes with the competence to instruct and push you. They will take the time to break down seemingly complicated movements to ensure proper form and make sure you are safe. The coaches are attentive and will ensure you get the most from your workouts. There's a huge priority on proper warm ups, stretching, form instruction, and scaling weights to your abilities. This makes it possible for new members and veterans to workout side by side and for everyone to get a great workout. On Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, Courtney is the yoga/mobility instructor and she's phenomenal as well. The community at New Species is amazing. We cheer each other along and help push each other through difficult workouts. We hang out and chat after workouts. People organize outings outside of the workouts (happy hours, house parties, pickup games, etc.). These people are MY people. I'm not the fastest or the strongest. In fact, I'm usually towards the rear of the pack. But Crossfit isn't about that. Everyone supports everyone. We strive to get better, but no one tries to be better at the expense of someone not as capable. Since starting at New Species I've put on almost 10 lbs of muscle (while my pants size remains the same!) and have taken over 1 full minute off my comfortable mile time. I'm doing things I never dreamed I was capable of and at 36 years old I am in the best shape of my active life. Forget Disneyland, New Species just may be the happiest place on earth.

The trainer was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He demonstrated all movements in a way that was easy to understand and he was patient with members when they had questions. All the members were warm and welcoming. The structure of the class was clever. We did some interval warm-ups, which had twenty-five seconds of work and twenty seconds of rest. The movements included mountain climbers, bird dogs, plank holds, push-ups, and other movements. Then we did five pull-ups and ten tricep over the head extensions. Then we did some mobility work-things like lunges, cossack squats, hip rotations, and arm rotations. After that, we did bench presses with a pause at the bottom and single-arm dumbbell bent-over rows. Then we did hip thrusters and farmer carry's and we finished the workout with some barbell bicep curls, some high band side steps and some sled pushes. My muscles were definitely feeling the burn at an increasing rate as the class went on. If I had to nitpick then I would say that there wasn't enough time to complete all of the movements and the gym is small. I imagine the gym would feel crowded if there were more than five people attending a class. When we got to "event #3," which included the barbell bicep curls, high band side steps, and sled pushes, we were given only seven minutes to complete it. Because it's important to stretch at the end of a workout, I respected the time cap on this section. But, I think there should have been a time cap on all three events. That would have prevented us from feeling rushed at the end. Go check this place out! I would like to come back and try one of their kettlebell classes.

Initial impressions just trying to find the place and walking in were not what I was expecting. If you are used to walking into a Lifetime Fitness with tons of equipment, throw that idea away. Michigan Kettlebells is tucked into a small commercial and storage complex. Once you walk in, you will see this is a large renovated garage and sets the mood for the workouts to come. You will learn to love it. There is a wide variety of people who attend. Classes generally have 10-15 people in them and have a 60/40 mix of men to women. Age ranges from ~16 - 60 years old across many different skill levels from beginners to marathon runners. Everyone is very supportive and a great crowd to workout with. The workouts are different every single day I have attended, but maintain the core principal to increase general strength and fitness. This is done through Kettlebell training in additional to raw,"backyard" type of workouts such as tractor tire flipping, sand bag lifting, push ups, pull ups and everything in between. Craig, the primary instructor, is very knowledgeable and an overall great guy. His wife, Dawn, holds female only boot camp classes on Sunday which my wife attends. She is loving those as well. A third trainer Derek, is another great asset to the gym. All I can say is do yourself a favor and check this out, I am happy I did.
