Leadhills Primary school is a small local primary school set within a listed building. Whilst the school once catered for a population in the region of a thousand, and all the children that go along with that number the local villages have dwindled greatly in the past 100 years and particularly since the mining operations came to a final end in the 1930's.
Currently the school has two composite classes, P1-3 in one and P4-7 in the other. Most of the staff are local which seems to mean that they have a good knowledge of the kids that are in their care as well as at least recognition of parents beyond the school gate.
Sadly though the schools role has recently been further diminished and if it is a trend that continues then it is likely that the local council authorities may make moves to close the school, a move which would be a serious blow for this small community. read more
