Fabrice and Victor, the two owners, are the most pleasant people you'll ever meet and are eager to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. They gave us good recommendations for restaurants, as well as local sites to visit. If it had not been for Fabrice's recommendation, my wife and I would have missed a trip to the Butte of Montsec, a spectacular monument commemorating the Battle of St. Mihiel. Our stay included breakfast with several options. Overall, I can't recommend this hotel too highly. FYI, there is a parking lot close by with free overnight parking.

The WiFi never once worked in our room, and the staff kept making excuses, like they expected it would. But other guests had the same problem. We had to go outside or to the lobby to connect. There is no restaurant at the hotel, and it's a healthy walk to the downtown commercial area. Their bar/pub is nice and they will order food in for you, which we did one night. But it's not a real meal. Another night we did the 25 minute walk each way to a great restaurant, but had to be sure we got back before they locked the gate at 11pm. Hotel La Villa Eugene did have a few drawbacks we didn't expect.

The room was obviously recently renovated, which was great! The staff was really nice. Our room had small private balcony which we used daily! Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the garden in the back- it looked kinda sparse and sad. The pool looked nice but we didn't use it. I am glad this place had an elevator for our check in and check out with luggage. The hotel is right next door to Mercier Champagne, which is super cool! We are still telling stories about the Marcier Champagne place and everything we learned about Eugene Mercier. We walked down Avenue de Champagne daily and enjoyed walking to all the Champagne houses including Moet and Chandon. It's not that big of a deal, but they don't have a safe in the room. Also, they do not have 'do not disturb' signs which makes it hard if you don't want any maids coming in your room. Last thing, although minor- the key to the room is on a large heavy keychain and they recommend you leave it with the front desk when you head out for the day. First time I have seen a hotel do this- but its such a small and historic place, maybe it's normal for these kinds of hotels. Overall, I would totally recommend this place to friends.

Trying to ask questions about the wine list from our waiter at dinner was, uh, almost impossible. Happily Bordeaux is spelled Bordeaux in French too! Who'da thunk it?!?! There is literally no where else to eat in Marre. 328 people is like that I suppose. No grocery stores either, but the good news is the restaurant at Gaulois serves an excellent supper. The room was quiet and charmingly updated. This IS the French countryside, with everything you can imagine included.

The wines were wonderful. The owner? So incredibly nice, so outgoing. Despite the language barrier - I speak no French, he very little English, we were able to connect. The proprietor's daughter at a local champagne producer recommend this as the only real restaurant nearby. The menu was limited, as we expected, but the choices were good. After tasting champagnes throughout the morning, we didn't need a bottle with lunch. Just a glass. Plus a nice haddock and penne pasta dish with a cream sauce. We ate in a nice patio area, with most of the patrons local. Language was an issue, but with the limited menu we survived fine. This is a nice place to stop for lunch if touring the champagne region north of Epernay.

Yes, the grounds make Downton Abbey look like the gardener's quarters! Stunningly beautiful with a rich WW 1 history as an emergency field hospital. The place is so big and airy that it's almost overwhelming. Bring a large contingent and stay a week to humanize the place. Is there croquet? After you stay here, write and let me know. The drive here from Verdun is quick and ever so beautiful. There just aren't many places like this. Go!
