Commence phase two of my Bordeaux Belgian beer adventures. Café des Moines is another delight…read moretucked away in one of those enchanting little side streets in central Bordeaux, its delicious nectars definitely deserve a little dégustation, if you will. And, like Le Titi Twister, you can sample the beers before committing yourself to the glassful. Whilst there might not be quite as much variety as at Titi Twister, there is still a brilliant selection of quality pressions and bottled beers, you certainly won't be stuck for choice, unless, like me, you're rubbish at making decisions in which case the sample shots become very useful! Café des Moines really comes into its own in terms of atmosphere and ambience. The first thing I notice upon entering for the first time is that they're playing my favourite band, masters of indie rock & blues: The Black Keys. Cue a massive grin on my face. They also get a lot of live bands in here, hosting a handful gigs throughout the week, though sometimes you do have to pay entry for these. Another plus is the friendly bar staff, always smiling and ready to exchange a few cheeky words as you order your pint! Things like that can really make a difference to my overall experience in a bar, so it was very much a pleasure to have such a friendly exchange with the staff. Also worth noting is the well-like/fountain structure at the rear of the bar - my friend adores it and wouldn't let me leave until I had seen it, bless him. Personally I don't think it's quite that exciting, but definitely worth a look! The only let-down is the toilets. Or rather toilet, singular. There is only one, which I am aware is very typical of Bordeaux, and France in general, but it doesn't change the fact that you end up having to queue on busy nights, nor that men are never as clean and tidy with their toilet business as us lady folk.

A few of us just ordered a simple green salad, but my sister ordered one with thin slices of beef and it was fabulous! I should have ordered that! My sister's bf ordered the charcuterie and his was nicely presented and very good too! As for beverages, a bottle of white wine and water sufficed. For our mains, our group ordered the following: Duck Confit, Baked Zander in a Pouch, Steak Frites, Pork Chops, Lamb, and Lobster. Everyone was pretty happy with their dishes. The duck confit was tender and tasty. The steak had a bit more fat than my sister wanted, but it was good. I had the lobster which came in a cassolette with vegetables and a really delicious broth with puff pastry on top and it was delicious! My husband's pork chop was good, but not as tender and tasty as the one he had at Chateau Léognan. He finished it and gave my sister and I a taste. We managed to save room for dessert. We ordered the Moelleux au Chocolat (molten chocolate cake), ice cream, and cheese. All were excellent and nicely presented. People skipped the espresso as it was about 10:30 when we finished our meal. Service was good. The restaurant had three large parties like ours and two servers serving all those parties, but they managed to attend to our needs. Everything came out hot and mostly at the same time. And when our server came by with our check (you have to ask for it in France), our total was 232€, about $58 per couple which includes service charge and taxes. So much more inexpensive to eat out in France! As we were settling our bill, a band started playing rock music (in English) inside the restaurant. Fourcés is a small village, so I am sure the whole town can hear the music. I'm so glad we decided to stop by Fourcés on our last night in SW France. Dinner was great at l'Auberge and this little town is so charming!

However when we arrived with a large group for lunch, they said the kitchen has closed and can't serve us. As in France the restaurant maybe open but kitchen will close after 3 pm. Hmmm. Long way to come out of the way for nothing. However restaurant next to it, le carrousel gourmand was will to take us in. Nice people.
