This is a small chapel dedicated to the memory of St Aurélien, second Bishop of Limoges…read more
The chapel was built originally in the 15th century to contain his relics, which had been located in the church of St Cessateur, which had fallen into ruins. It was enlarged in the 17th century, with the addition of the Choir.
It has always been associated with the Butchers' Guild (and is located just off the attractive Rue de la boucherie), who have since transformed into the Brotherhood of Saint Aurélien. The Bortherhood bought the chapel after the French Revolution and now maintain it.
The chapel is a small, dark and intimate space, and through the gloom it is possible to see, as your eyes become accustomed to the dark, the elaborate baroque decoration of the altarpiece. It contains a 15th century of St Catherine as well as the gilded baroque reliquary.
Services are still held regularly.
