My Mother and I were in the neighbourhood and needed a feed. Yelp of course lead me to this fine family restaurant just off Goodwood road. Easily spotted with colourful signage on the road. Sumac staff are quiet, but are really friendly and welcoming. They are very happy to walk you through the menu if you are unsure of what items are. Some of them I had not heard of before. My Mum and I love to sample everything, and there isn't really much we don't like. So we of course went for the Shashlik Platter. It comes with three different styles of Shashlik, hummus, baba ganoush, home-made pickles, tabouli, salad with crispy pita, spiced rice and garlic sauce. All of that for $24.90! So awesome! We actually thought it would be smaller, so we ordered a plate of falafels as well. And yes, we definitely had stuff to take home. My fave on the platter was the hummus, pickles & chicken shashlik. All very flavoursome and well spiced. Wow, that garlic sauce is really intense, but also amazing on the pita bread. The falafels were fresh, but not as fluffy as I would have liked. They were full of fresh herbs though, so that made up for that! A huge menu to choose from, so be prepared to take a while to decide. You will really love this place!

You could tell how proud he is of his Lebanese heritage and regaled up with a few stories of Houda, his grandmother and the restaurant's namesake. In addition he helped guide some of our dining choices and we were not disappointed! Houda's serves up tasty, flavourful, and generous portions. I don't know why it's called a munooshi - it looks fairly similar to a yiros to me, minus the sticks of anonymous meat twirling around behind the counter. All ingredients are laid out fresh in a sandwhich bar at the front of the shop and you can either get takeaway or sit upstairs in their small dining room. I watched them make the munooshi as the two women cooking consistently yelled at each other from across the room, the guy behind the counter complained that "I leave for one minute and chaos" and I was delighted even before receiving the product. Take 1 large soft pita bread, smother it in tahini, add freshly cooked moist falafel with a crispy exterior, add fresh rocket, tomatoes and cucumber and then smooth the pita bread in half, toast in the grill and wrap up to serve. Simple? Yes. Bloody cheap? At $8 yes. Healthy? Anything with vegetables and tahini has to be - so yes. Quick service? For how busy they were at lunch - yes. Filling? I could have split it between two and then gotten a fresh juice with lunch - yes. So go and get munoosh'd next lunch time.

It's sort of like a folded over yiros, but more delicious. Munooshi is the perfect place to go, when you are after a quick lunch in the city. Many of the workers along rundle street run down there for a quick bite on their lunch break. Munooshi has many vegetarian as well as meat lover options and is extremely healthy. A lot of my health freak/exercise freak friends frequent the joint regularly. However, my favourite thing about Munooshi is that it is extremely cheap! You can purchase a meal and a drink for little over $10, so it definitely won't break the bank. The café has very limited seating area, so if you plan to go during peak hour (12-1pm) I'd suggest getting take-away. Rymill Park is situated directly across the road, so if it's a nice day, take your munooshi and go and enjoy it in the park!

There is space for large groups at the back of the restaurant, maybe call and book in advance though. They are always busy! So, the only way to dine here is to go the banquet menu. You will be asked, "how hungry are you?" to which you reply "very hungry". They will adjust the cost to your hunger meter. As for the last time I dined, I said I was very hungry and they charged 4 people $25 each. Bargain! Inclusive of the banquet menu is free BYO. So, what you have to do then is hop out of your seat, run across the road to the Rosemont Hotel street bottle shop and grab something to drink. Or bring something along with you; depends how prepared you are. What you do need to prepare for is the amazing dishes served your way. Now, this is homely traditional Jewish food. So you will be given hummus, tabouli, falafels, koftas, green beans, battered fried cauliflower, etc... But this is the best quality you can get. The Hummus is seasoned perfect with the right amount of acidity. The tabouli is super fresh and delightful. You just want a endless plate of Koftas. The beans are served with a tomato sauce that you need to dip your pita bread in. The Cauliflower has a spiced taste and is cooked perfectly without being broken down and heavy with batter. I could go on and on. As for the service, it is fast. This restaurant is used to being busy, so they produce the food quickly and will continue bringing it out until your table is filled with mouth watering selections. As for the décor, don't let it put you off. It is not about the aesthetics here, it is about the food. I think that this restaurant has looked the same in the last 30+ years. True, my mum has photos from her hens night here! So, please take my word for it. Bring your family and friends here and prepare for a great feast! ps. forgive my terrible photos. I was too focused eating the food! ;)

It also looks like it has been around longer than I remember - the place is a little worn, but not gloomy. Like many restaurants that have been around long enough to become an 'institution' in Adelaide, the staff are a little aloof. Actually I think Jerusalem House are almost more famous for the bad service than for the food, but that somehow makes it even more charming, in a Black Books kinda way. I prefer aloof to obsequious, although once they did forget to bring my table any form of cutlery whatsoever. One of the waiters is a ten-year old kid, he is less gruff, more cute. I'm reasonably happy to put my complaints about the service aside, because 1) perfect service makes me feel even more uncomfortable and 2) the food is worth coming back for. It's definitely not fancy, and the portions are regular-sized, not huge, but there is something about it that makes me want to eat it again and again. I would suspect MSG but I think it is more likely to be tahini. Personal favourites: fresh lemon juice (almost too natural, I usually water mine down a little, makes it go further anyway), the rice with lentils and yoghurt (it has a proper name, I forget), and the tahini cauliflower. The cauliflower is so good that my boyfriend made up an imitation recipe that is pretty damn close to the original. I keep buying cauliflowers and leaving them around the kitchen as a hint. I forgot to mention the ceiling has a hilarious imitation tent roof made out of Hessian bags.

Now boys and girls, who knew "panacea" means to "cure all"?…read moreThat is the perfect description for the warming, hearty spanish inspired meals served up from a daily changing specials menu and regular pizza and tapas fare here. Sit amongst birds nest lighting, green walls and in uncomfortable plastic chairs while you watch a chaotic open kitchen steam, clang and heat up inside or take a leisurely look down your nose at passers by as you sip your red wine and nibble tapas under big white umbrellas in the summer breeze outside. Crispy BBQ quail, simple warmed olives and baked gnocchi are all you really need to look at but there is a very long menu for those who like to feel they have choice. Note thought that this is one of those places where you need to probably allow sharing plate minimum per person though if you want to be full at the end of the night. Very strong Moroccan, Spanish and meat based flavours engulf most dishes here and you will get rich flavours like goats cheese, marinated herbs and plenty of salt coming through with most dishes - but it is worth it. Service is hilariously attentive - I have had 2 people serving my table all 3 times I have been to date. And waitered service like that is normally a lot more expensive in Adelaide now-days. It really makes you feel special and enhances the experience of "being amongst it" where you are literally next to the open kitchen if you are in the main area. If you don't fancy flashing the AMEX card then dine here with the suits and ties or stockings and slippers (very few of those) for lunch and dinner from 12-6pm Monday to Thursday for half price pizzas and jugs of sangria - bargain!

We ordered the pate entree to share and we're impressed at the very generous serving. The flavour was perfect and just enough to keep us going until our later Dinner. The service was good. However when we arrived we were the only ones there. Although friendly, it wasn't above and beyond. It would be good to see how they fare when the restaurant was a little busier. Will definitely return to try the full menu and for more sangria. If you have not already been, now's the time - especially with the current Yelp offer which will make that sangria extra sweet and soul soothing.

You have the option of smoking shisha indoors or outside, which makes your option largely dependent on the weather. They have a large selection of flavours to choose from, all with a very sweet aftertaste. My personal favourite would be grape, but others like green apple and strawberry aren't too shabby either. The food is equally as pleasing, with a simple yet delicious menu of Arabic specialties. The chicken yiros has to be my all-time favourite, yet I'm also a big fan of their hot dogs. No matter your choice, it's always satisfying. Their coffee isn't great, and I think if they served Arabic coffee instead it would complete the experience. And if that's not enough, the shop owners are implementing a PS3 gaming system in the lounge area - if they get the games right, I don't think I'll ever need to leave. Smoking shisha whilst playing video games can't be anything short of brilliant.

There are a few shisha venues along the Hindley Street strip but Horus is the oldest and my…read morefavourite. It has managed to stick around when others have failed, largely because of the quality of the shisha, the sense of community the place attracts, and because it is open when others are not. The staff are expert at the etiquette and use of shisha, and certainly don't mind assisting the newcomer. Although in Hindley Street, you're more likely to see friends playing cards than you are a pack of drunks, and Horus is not a licensed premise. If people are bothersome, the staff are quick to act and I always feel safe. The shishas are professionally assembled and I have never been short-changed in tobacco. Staff are continuously outside with containers of coal, ensuring you get the most out of your shisha. Unlike some other places in town, there is no deposit required for shisha use and there are multiple flavours and two sizes. I've been told that they will be getting new stock in soon, including my personal favourite "cappuccino". The owner, Yasser, let me test a new combination "watermelon and mint" which was ok, but I will be sticking to my staple of "grape and mint", at least until the "cappuccino" arrives. Since smoking laws have relegated shisha users to the patch of sidewalk outside, the decor of the inside has slipped a little, though the toilets have certainly improved. Aforementioned toilets are located towards the back of the business behind a door marked "staff only" to discourage use by unscrupulous non-customers, but I always use them and patron-use is fine. Occasionally on the weekends you will have to wait inside for a table to be free outside to smoke a shisha. In the summer time, the experience of smoking a shisha outside can't be beat, but winter along Hindley Street can be bitter and I usually take gloves. As far as the food is concerned, it is a simple kebab shop, but all ingredients are made fresh daily, which is also why I think their kebabs are the best in town. The quality of the falafel and the tabouli is particularly good. Horus also provides pots of mint tea, made just as thoughtfully as they do everything else.

It's supposedly a fusion of Italian, Bosnian and Middle Eastern cuisines which piqued my interest. The interior is interesting there's a section with floor seating (where you remove your shoes) as well as the usual table and booth seating. I ordered the Angus Beef Burger with smoked mozarella, gherkins, beetroot & aioli. What really set this burger apart is the smoked mozarella... oh my lord it's AMAZING. I need to find out if there's any places that sell smoked cheeses, I feel like it's something I now need in my life! The beef was quite juicy and along with the pickles and the beetroot and sauce, it ended up quite messy as many burgers do. I'm assuming La'Fig ran out of brioche because there was a foccacia type bread in its place which was not bad, but a little dry. The burger came with a pretty generous side of sweet potato fries (ran out of regular fries) which were cooked pretty well, crispy exterior with a soft and fluffy sweet potato inside and most importantly, it wasn't soggy! It just needed some salt which was on the table, so no troubles there. I also had a slice of my friend's La'Fig Pizza with bresaola (a cured Italian beef), feta, rocket and fig. It was alright, The fig works with the cured meat and cheese and while the base wasn't particularly soggy, I found it somewhat greasy. I definitely preferred the burger. Everyone there seemed to enjoy the food which is a good sign. Last but not least I bought a couple of nutella filled donuts to takeaway since the staff said they were freshly made. They were tasty because how can anything go wrong with nutella right? That being said I ended up eating them a few hours later but they were still good. The staff are warm, friendly and happy to run through the menu and answer any questions. I was pretty happy paying $17.50 for the burger as the portion was generous and there was that smoked mozzarella, not to mention the sweet potato fries. The donuts were around $3.50 which is alright. It's interesting that they use camel in some of the dishes and it's something I may come back to try.
