Our first meal in France, after walking a few kilometers, on the opening night of La Fete de Musique. Roaming bands of musicians serenaded us poor tired traveling souls, after we staggered to this random cafe that had many locals sitting in it, but not claustrophobically many like the cafes in the vieux port (because of the fete du musique). Our servers were sweet and self-deprecating and funny with trying (very successfully) to communicate in English. This all is to explain the extraneous star: I LOVED this place and it's hard for me to separate this sentiment from the actual restaurant.
There were no menus, the waiters just held up the board for us and explained each item. We got the chevre chaud salade with smoked salmon and the house aioli, plus a Castel cake and a half-carafe of wine and a cafe au lait. The total was around 30 euro for two, and we were both stuffed.
So, classic dishes, very well done:
Chevre chaud: I like my goat cheese a bit warmer but I haven't had one of these salads in five years and this hit the spot. Lots of smoked salmon and fresh greens.
Aioli: New to this dish. A big slab of white fish, a mound of green beans, some cauliflower, potatoes, and carrots, all steamed and served with the very, very garlicky aioli. First time having it, but certainly not the last: this was delicious! Loved the simplicity and the plenty.
Castel: a meringue-based almond flour cake with praline. Reminded us of those waffle-y wafer cookies filled with cream. Quite tasty, served with fresh whipped cream, 3.50 euros.
Coffee: he liked it. first french coffee yay!
Yay! Love the people watching in the square and the terrace seating, plus the extremely convenient location. read more
