3 stars: Good Service, Okay Food, Okay Price Went around 8am on a Monday morning, the restaurant was pretty empty and we were seated pretty quickly. Menu was quite big, from pancakes and omelets to skillets. I settled on an omelet while my friend got a skillet, he also ordered a cup of apple cider and OJ. He said both were pretty good. White Lightning: Solid omelet that came with salsa, potatoes and an english muffin. Omelet was quite big but pretty bland if not for the salsa, it added a lot of flavor. English muffin was good but the potatoes were quite dry, could not eat without ketchup or hot sauce. They give you a lot of potatoes so I could not finish that. It was right around $10, not a bad price for how much food you're getting especially in Evanston. Wanderer: Had a bite of my friend's skillet, same problem as the potatoes I got from my omelet. Quite dry, but the cheese and eggs made up for it and again, the portion was quite huge. Came with an english muffin. Service: Service was good, the server came around enough to get us whatever we needed and gave us the bill right when we were about to ask for it. Great timing though it took a bit for the food come out. Overall: Nothing special, but not bad by any means. Ryan took care of us this morning, was helpful, engaging, and knew his way around the menu. Also kept our waters filled and English breakfast tea topped off. Joel the manager was working the floor and keeping customers happy too. I ordered a build-your-own scramble with fresh fruit and my friend got scrambled eggs (not dry at all-nice)turkey sausage, English muffin, and two pancakes on the side. Both of us liked our food and cleaned our plates. I like that there are a few unusual items to choose from in the build-your-own scramblers. I also got a Belgian waffle to go. Soooo excited to eat it but I have to go on a walk first to build up another appetite!!! Restaurant was clean, bathrooms clean too. Parking is nice and easy on Benson ave. I think I would give this place 3.5 stars, but rounded down to 3 because there's nothing special enough about this place to get me to come back. Been here 4 times, but my most recent visit was today (and none of my other past experiences have been so much better/worse that it's worth mentioning). Came with one other person. I personally got to try: -Gooey buns: English muffins with cinnamon, brown sugar, and toasted almonds. Comes with a side of cream cheese and apples in some syrupy sauce. Sounds more appetizing than it actually tastes. I was expected to be blown away by some sugary goodness, but the flavors were just okay. - Greek Goddess omelette: comes with potatoes and an english muffin; omelette itself has spinach, artichoke, tomatoes, and feta cheese (I asked for no cheese). The omelette itself is a bit on the small end, but it pretty much has all my favorite omelette ingredients. Plus it costs a little less than $7. Overall, food was decent but nothing particularly memorable. We love our local Le Peeps with its clean interior, delicious offerings, many long time staff and consistently good food. We returned post pandemic, noticed our fave had been rotated off the menu, described it to the waiter and the magic kitchen made it happen-- Bumper Crop! Our standard egg, broccoli, mushroom dish tasted incredible! It's the dish I have eaten there for 30 years and their willingness to make it happen is one of the things we love about Le Peeps. I have breakfast here a couple times a month or so. I have never been disappointed in either the food or the service. (One of the biggest things in their favor is that they know how to poach an egg and it doesn't come in a water-filled dish like some places. This place usually has very good food and are conveniently located in downtown. They take customer service very seriously. I know because one time I got subpar service from a waiter and the owner took care of it right away!! I was so impressed that I kept coming back over and over again and have had no issues. So if you're looking for a really good breakfast and brunch place that are pretty consistent as far as their food and customer service then I recommend Le Peep Restaurant. This place is a local gem. If you go, you'll see two crowds 1) the retired community that comes here no matter what every day of the week and 2) Northwestern students, often with visiting parents in tow. Food: if you like southwest flavors, I highly recommend the Desperado bowl. Both the red and green salsas are fantastic. (Heavy on onions though so watch out!) The chicken fried steak is also delicious and just hits the spot because I cannot replicate it at home no matter how hard I try. Menu: they have a seasonal extra menu in addition to the regular and monthly themed pancakes. Churro French toast? Why not! Sugary goodness. It's the like of my visit today that makes me think twice before coming back: Terrible coffee, mediocre food + about 15 minutes in line to pay. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't a busy hour. A descent number of tables were free and a handful of people were waiting to be seated. But about twenty were waiting in line simply to pay for the check. A take home lesson though: three to four oz of coffee + a looot of ice = a pint of iced coffee. read more

This was the first place I went when i arrived in Chicago because my friend who lives here likes it! I forgot what I got :( but it was delicious! But because there were so many people with relatively less servers, the service might get a bit slow from time to time. It took us 10 minutes to get seated. And then about 15 minutes to take the order. Service aside, the food was fantastic. I got the stuffed French toast. I'm a huge French toast fan. The texture is firm and fluffy at the same time. Le Peep is certainly a go-to place for Sunday brunch. Thus, there is typically waiting time associated with each visit. From prior experience, I have usually gotten seated earlier than the approximate waiting time I was given, but nonetheless after some time spent waiting. Le Peep has what they call the "Pancake of the Month", and they always have something that will capture my interest. When we visit together, my fiancé and I usually get the Colorado and White Lightning omelet, along with an order of the Pancake of the Month, which we share. Needless to say, we walk out feeling very full. Their omelets are delicious, and the ingredients seem fresh. Waiting time for the food is about average. The servers treat their customers nicely, but are (understandably) always super busy with customers. Overall, food and service are good, and I will likely continue to visit occasionally. read more

We found this place because it was close to our hotel, easy to walk to, and close to other shops. We got lucky and found this gem. We've come here 3 days in a row. Hostess was inviting & friendly. Solid medium overall. Except for one amazing detail. My niece is insanely picky about food and when asked if she wanted a 'funny face pancake' she said that no she did not. I am writing this so HOPEFULLY they will make positive choices-- because frankly-- I am grieving-- because of the quality they USED to have. When I found out that what I wanted was no longer on the menus-/ I ordered another crepe- -- oh dear. It had no flavor-- FLAVOR is the operative word here. The chicken was dryer than a desert-- it had NO flavor-- nothing had any flavor. The past review said that they always packed- and they USED to be-- but not today-- and I found out why. The fresh squeezed orange juice is still good. Their only saving Grace. Here's the solution-- your servers are good--FURE the cook-- someone who can make a hollandaise that has flavor -- and potatoes that are crispy on the outside and moist on the inside-- with FLAVOR- I can't believe that I spent $20. for the worst breakfast that I have ever had in my life. I am mortified..... I am innocently sitting with my daughter waiting to eat breakfast. We are at the waiting area of the breakfast place (which was by the way wonderful and healthy)......... but I digress.... this family sits down next to us on the bench. Its a young mom and dad and their daughter who looks about 2 years old. She is staring at me (which, by itself to be stared at by young kids is not unusual) but then, out it comes.... "Pappa" Without even looking at me, her mom says to her daughter, no thats not grandpa. WTF!!! Am I that old to be mistaken for some 2 year old's grandfather?!?! Today will live in my personal history as being more than middle aged. Now onto a side note, very good breakfast. Not gourmet, but pretty darn good. Since we moved to Evanston in January of 2020, my wife and I have made it a point to try as many Evanston places as possible whenever we walk downtown. :) We've passed by Le Peep a few times and decided to give it a shot. We went yesterday, Sunday 8/1. It was a little busy, but we got seated right away because we wanted to eat indoors. The service started out great. We got our drinks right away. She ordered a latte, and I ordered an Iced Tea. She got the pancakes, and I got the GF waffle with a side of bacon. When the food came out, they only brought the pancakes and my bacon. They said the GF waffle takes a little longer. I wish they would've said something when I ordered instead of waiting until we got half our order. So that was strike one. Strike two was when the server dropped off my waffle after 7 minutes of waiting, she failed to ask if I wanted a refill on my tea, which was very strategically placed at the spot on the table where even a blind person could see I needed a refill. Strike three was finally when we got our check after waiting and waiting and waiting for the server to come back, which he failed to do to even check on us to see how we liked the food. I got pretty irritated. He gave us our check and said "you pay at the counter." And that was it. I went to the counter to pay, and the lady asked how everything was. I passive aggressively said "alright." She didn't get the hint. I paid. That was it. Would I go back? Nope. Do I recommend this for you? Not if you plan to go on a Sunday. I suggest Denny's. Great place for breakfast or lunch. The location doesn't have parking but they have plenty of parking on the street. There specials change every now in then with the season. I enjoyed their crepes filled with marscapone and citrus zest or the french toast stuffed with custard. They also have a good amount of coffee options not just your coffee cup every other place offers. They offer a breakfast combo that also includes Belgium waffles or pancakes and peasant potatoes. I hated this place the first time-- everything seemed so precious, there was something suffocatingly rural about it, the sun didn't shine in through the windows the right way. It was 7:30am, and Friend and I had been driving idly all night and were unshowered and dressed like good-fer-nuthin punks. The food was terribly greasy. Everyone else was done up all proper-like. It was an ill-fated visit. I've been here a couple more times after that. It's actually not so bad on a full 6 hours of sleep-- the food is decent (but varies from visit to visit) but the atmosphere is still kind of affected, with floral tablecloths and all, in a kitschy way. Le Peep can transform from a quiet breakfast restaurant to a loud brunch joint in minutes. I like the "Hen Pen"-- two eggs, potatoes, and corned beef hash with buttered English muffin. Got the "Okey-Dokey-Artichokey pampered eggs" once --ugh, I hate when ordering inherently involves embarrassment-- and it was not very good. Their pancakes are big, and better than Clarke's. The breakfast burrito-- whoa there. It's about the size of a newborn child, except stuffed with potatoes instead of... y'know, people material. If you are looking for delicate food, do not order this. If the sentence "I could eat an ox" has come out of your mouth in the last half hour, go right ahead. Service is nice and when you order a cup of coffee they bring you a whole carafe. Stick with the breakfast basics. Before you go, grab a copy of the Daily Northwestern on a street corner and rip out Le Peep's "buy an entree get the second for 99 cents" coupon that is always there. It is awesome.
