Stopped in here on Sunday intending to buy a Laguiole knife and lets just say I did not.
My French is decent so I usually start conversations in stores in French, only resorting to English for specific vocabulary words I don't know or if the salesperson switches to English and is clearly stronger in English than I am in French. As a result, I don't get treated like a tourist often.
In this store, I didn't get much past "bonjour monsieur" before switching to English because I knew my vocabulary was not up to the task of buying a knife. Well boy did I get the "treat the American tourist like crap" French stereotype treatment!
The guy behind the counter acted like my very presence in the store was an annoyance to him, despite the total lack of other customers. He made no effort to help me pick a knife, looked pained and rolled his eyes ... I couldn't wait to get out of there.
Contrast this with my experience two days later at Laguiole Galérie, where I did end up buying a knife and enjoying every minute I spent there. I'll write that review next!
So in brief: Located on a cute street and open on Sundays, convenient to the Marais, but a limited selection and suitable only for masochistic shoppers. read more
