Your intrepid vegetarian explorer has another little find to share in Lille. Lille, while not…read moreworld renowned for an abundance of vegetarian options, has gifted vegetarians with charming buildings to behold and an excellent walking environment in which to build an appetite while seeking cuisine. Dumplings & Co would be a 3 star rating were it not for all of the little subtleties that caught my attention. It was as if there were little peculiarities, little "this isn't quite what I expected" phenomena for me to pause and consider. Upon arrival from Rue de Gand, which has scarcely any vegetarian options among its famed restaurant road, I noticed that Dumplings & Co had vegetarian dumplings. Score. I only need to eat something, I thought. At first, for some reason, I thought the waitress/hostess did not speak much English, so we switched to Mandarin. Explaining that I'm a vegetarian, she pointed out the vegetarian dumplings, and I was excited to start. I noticed her accent in Chinese was quite unfamiliar to my ears - I was eager to find out more. Behold, a small, nay very small first floor. I took the stairs (the narrowest circular stairwell that regulations may allow, I assume) to the second floor. I was thrilled - it was like entering a secret treehouse. I ordered a combo meal, which was quite a surprise. Dumplings - good. Hot sauce for the dumplings - well, I'll be - it seemed like Korean gochujang (the hot sauce used for Bi Bim Bap). Well, that's different. Bubble tea - decent. I noticed the menu offered mantou, which was really baozi if you look at the picture. Haha, almost caught me. :) Dessert pancakes sandwiching red bean paste - okay. It also came with orange juice, which was novel. So, I was eager to know the region where our waitress grew up, given her accent was so unfamiliar. It turns out she is Faguoren! (French ;-)) She was delightfully helpful and amiable. It also turns out she speaks English far better than I speak Mandarin, so my first impression was mistaken. I was pleased, the meal was reasonable, and the service was charming.

But they do their best to seat as many people as possible. I got in fairly quickly because i was alone. The food was fantastic. I had the Carbonade a la Biere, and it was so great! Like a beef stew and very tasty. Also had some good Belgian beer. Service was attentive and very fast. The restaurant is lively and exciting - not really a quiet romantic dinner. But a lot of fun!

While the register states No Cards one of the servers told the table next to mine not worry when they didn't have enough euros. Only a drink menu was provided and the dishes being served that day were handwritten on moveable boards or posted on the wall. I had on my list a couple to try but finally went with the Belgian carbonades à la biere which was beef stew with mashed potatoes in a dark gravy made with beer. The plate was quite generous and much appreciated since I devoured it. I enjoyed the creaminess of the potatoes swirled with gravy but the meat could've been a tad bit more tender. Service was good. I think everyone on the floor stopped by my table for one reason or the other. Ambiance was casual and looked like many people were taking their time over their meals. When finished you need head to the register to settle the tab. I paid in cash. Worth a return visit.
