We were recommended Le Dragon D'or by a Chinese friend of my wife. She's lived in Lille for many years now and in her opinion, this is one of the only spots in Lille to get authentic Chinese food... But it's not that simple.
First, let me start by saying that the food was spectacular. We ordered braised meatballs and a whole spicy fish. The owner was incredibly friendly, and as usual, surprised by my ability to eat spicy foods as a white guy. So if you're looking for spectacular Chinese food this is the spot...
Now, the caveat to this is their menu. Having lived in China, I know what authentic Chinese food is. My wife's friend knows that, and that is one of the reasons she suggested this place, but she also stressed, when you walk in you'll be given a menu... Tell them you want the Chinese menu. It's no frills, on A4 paper, and not even handed out to the typical patrons. You have to ask for it. We also had to explain when ordering, that I had lived in China, could handle spice, and wanted them to make it the way they'd make it for their Chinese customers. This is the only reason why this spot gets four and not five stars. We saw other non-Chinese people come in and order from the typical menu. Sweet and sour this, mushroom noodle that. Uninspired and typical. It's a shame that people either don't know about the "secret" menu, or that if they order from it, it may be adjusted to western palates.
If you're willing to go through the hoopla of assuring them you can handle it--go here, order real Chinese food and enjoy. I can't speak on the typical menu though. I'm sure it's just that typical. read more
