Another surprise is that the show is held outdoors in Quebec City's Saint-Roch district which is about a 10 minute downhill walk from Vieux Quebec City to Lower Town. The staging has incredibly all been set up under the Dufferin-Montmorency highway overpass. It may be hard to imagine but the venue adds to the mystery and magic of the show. Apparently for the past 4 years Cirque Du Soleil has presented free shows in this spot during the summer months. Each year a different artistic director is called upon to create something innovative and befitting this unique outdoor space. The director this year is Pamela Schneider and I sing her praises. The sets and lighting are all professionally done and there is no apparent scrimping because it's not in a "real" theater. The music is all live and is an integral part of the entire experience. If I could buy the video of this show, I would. When we were there the show started at 9:30pm but as of August 1st it starts at 9:00pm. Get there early if you want a seat. We got there only about 5 minutes before the show started so all the seats were taken but it didn't matter. Standing, we could still see perfectly. The crowd was friendly and attentive and not at all overbearing. There was no pushing, jostling and nothing uncomfortable. In fact, we ended happy to be standing because the music is so cool you kind of want to be up and moving and clapping. When the show was over, it was pleasant to find there was no mad dash to a parking lot. Most people like us seemed to be on foot and seemed to be leaving in a nicely mesmerized post-show state of mind. We followed most of the crowd back up the hilly streets to Vieux Quebec. We stopped in a local restaurant for a drink on the outdoor patio. Imagine our surprise about 40 minutes later when much of the Cirque cast showed up to have drinks. We got to say thank you to this exuberant and talented group of artists. If you're thinking of a trip to QC before September 1st, I'd make sure to go see this. If not, remember it for next summer when who knows what new and exciting show will be planned.

It seems that this set up is almost like their practice shows, they try new tricks, and new members get to practice their showmanship here. Whatever it is, it is amazing and not to be missed! The show's routine changes year to year. Like Alexandra said, it gets really busy, come in early to snag a good spot. But even if you don't, the venue will somehow still hold lots of audiences. People were also allowed to stand near the stage. Ticking so many boxes, being free, outdoor, awesome vibe, the show completes any trip to Quebec. If I am lucky enough to visit Quebec again, I would definitely definitely go again.

It wasn't a music "festival", but if I told you that the first big concert I ever attended was a…read moredouble bill of The Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac you could reasonably assume that Quebec City's 11-day FEQ Festival might not be my jam but surprise: I loved it. One ticket gets you admission to all of the paid stages featuring 11 nights of music. No ticket is needed for admission to the free stage also featuring very good music. During FEQ the streets come alive in the early evening, with sponsor, vendor, food, and drink booths. Participating in any part of the FEQ experience pretty much makes it unnecessary to plan anything else for your evenings; it's literally where everyone is. When a couple evenings of music are canceled due to impending thunderstorms attendees leave in an orderly fashion understanding that their ticket will get them into all of the shows on another night and, well, what are you going to do about inclement weather? There are many different prices of admission to FEQ and what you pay dictates where you'll sit or stand during the shows. The artists - at least in 2023 - don't seem to be the biggest names in the business but many were well known (e.g. Foo Fighters, Green Day). In addition to the free stage a VIP pass got me into the Plains of Abraham stage one evening: 3 bands, huge screens, great sound, lots of fun. Festival tickets sell out but whether or not you have them, planning a trip to coincide with this festival is the right way to see Quebec City.

This is a world class festival. The biggest and longest one in canada!…read more The first time I saw FEQ, I had no idea what it was but just notices the huge crowds near the citadel and parliament. The place is on fire. People are kind and it's just a great festival with great music. There are 3 stages and each one has either 3-6 performers at each one. The quebec loto stage is more personable and only allows about 2000 people each night. The bell stage allows up to 90000 people! They frequently close the gates around 8pm for big shows bc it reaches capacity. For me the best part is the run to the stage. They open the gates at 6pm and people run to their preffered spots on the gate. Along the middle most musicians come up close for you to get amazing photos and even high five you! It's magical and I am so addicted to front row. It is outside and weather dependant but I've only had 2 shows cancelled by weather in two years (imagine dragons and Luis fonsi). They do close if there is lightening or thunder.

Sure there are the roaming clowns pre-show and the pseudo-audience that will later be a part of the show, but that gets so old once you've seen quite a few shows. The ticket prices could have come in a little lower if they will not put out their signature tent and quaint feel. Some of the performers are a tad shaky but that's understandable with the amount of contortionism and gymnastics they do. A good solid clap for the juggler and the trampoline jumpers. The stunts are somewhat of a low risk compared to their other shows. The choreography seemed spaced out wide. The music seemed too canned. I'm over it. And I'm waiting for the next real thing. What a fun and interesting way to experience the historic portions of Quebec City! I participated…read morein the "Crimes in New France" walk, and our costumed host Jeremy stayed in character as one of the settlement's 17th-century executioners throughout the walk. It was a tremedously fun and fascinating experience, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of Quebec City. Just a warning though--the walk begins at the top of the Old Town, and wends its way down some fairly steep cobbled streets to the lower part of the Old City. You need to be in reasonably good physical shape to participate--people needing mobility assistance would have a difficult time. The walk ends in the lower part of Old Town, just a block from the funicular that takes you to the plaza in front of Chateau Frontenac. Or, you can climb the many, many stairs up to the top...
