    Planet exposition - The Sun
    Mark S.

A different take on the children's museum concept. Offers different missions to virtually explore through video presentations. There is also an exposition on space crafts and planets as well as the possibility of group events with space themed activities and rides (group events 5 years and up).

April 4, 2024. Would you visit a museum of archeology and ancient ruins?…read more Museum built on the ruins of the original settlement of Montreal, including excavation of the foundations, which I skipped over for the most part. We came to see the history of the city from the very beginning through paintings, drawings, colorful illustrations, and multimedia of the settlers meeting the native Indians, and conflicts through the ages. Covered not only the first nations, but the war between France and Britian over control of Quebec. The pirate room showed a hands on deck experience onboard a pirate ship, with cannons ready to fire, people strung up in punishment cages, and sailers fighting ontop of ship rigging. Didn't know there were pirates off the coast of Canada in 1600s and 1700s. I didn't think it was possible, but probably the most interesting lighted exhibit anywhere on a city sewer system.

I enjoyed going through the exhibitions put together which give an account of the French settlement of Montreal along with the French colonialists integrating with the First Nations to the eventual British occupations and modern day. Probably the exhibition that stirred the most intrigue from me was the knight chevalier since Americans don't have an equivalent period in their history. The gift shop carried a nice assortment of goods including wares made in Canada.

We've been doing this for about 5 years and this year we decided to go to this museum. I've been to many museums in Boston, NYC, and LA. However, besides the Broad in LA- this museum is very well curated. What I love the most is that many of them are interactive and keeps you curious. I highly suggest you visit museum when you have a chance!

When I visited, the exhibit was "femmes volcans forêts torrents,) an exhibit featuring nine woman artists whose works relate to the environment, ecosystems, environmentalism, etc. I'm not sure I would have gotten much out of the exhibit or spent as much time at the museum except that they offer a free walking tour of the exhibit if you enter at the right time (included with the price you pay to visit; the museum is not free). The guide was wonderful and really helped me to have a better interaction with the pieces. I highly recommend taking them up on their offer of a tour if you have the time! Overall, very small and the temporary location is strange, but it can be very interesting if you're interested in contemporary art or if you're interested in the exhibit at the time you visit!

The English mass is 12:15 pm and 7:00 pm, Mon - Saturday and 11:15 am on Sunday. Plan to arrive early, since the masses can get filled up. It is free to enter or look around, and you just pay for parking, tours, or for the museum. Although there are stairs, we took the several flights of escalators up to the Votive chapel floor where the Crypt church was. The Votive chapel is a hallway lined in flickering votive candles. I really enjoyed the English mass; the cantor, who sings the prayers you repeat, had the most beautiful voice I ever heard in church. Afterwards, we walked around the large gift shops, Brother Andre's tomb, enjoyed the beautiful view of the city, poked my head into the Basilica but did not go in since the French mass was going to be be held, saw the original small chapel (no pictures allowed), and walked around the Garden of the Way of the Cross which has larger than life statues depicting the stations of the cross. I found them particularly moving, since the sorrow, struggle, and pain was depicted in the faces so large and more realistically than looking at small paintings. At the end, there were a number of stairs to walk down or I think you would need to backtrack to take the paths back to the start. Really a special place and you can feel the peace and prayers here in spite of the hundreds of people.

There's construction ongoing on the premises to build an elevator and making it easier to navigate between the floors.

They have two options available--rock and roll experience or a nature experience. I'm all about being in nature when possible so that was the natural choice of mine (no pun intended!), if I can't be outside, why not experience it inside? There's a few different rooms that you can go into on your own timeframe. The first one had rocking chairs which was lovely but then the rooms after that just had benches scattered throughout. Besides a few rude people having full fledged conversations in the middle of the experience, it was a lovely immersion experience.

When in Montreal a few weeks ago, I had some time to kill my dinner reservation and just happened up on OASIS Immersion (when exploring Montreal's Underground City, I ended up in Palais des Congres, where OASIS is housed). I decided it seemed like a fun way to spend an hour or so before heading to my dinner. I'm glad I stopped by - the show I caught was definitely the best immersive art exhibit I've seen so far. I think they may offer different experiences on different days, but the show I caught was Nature Vive/Root for Nature. The Root for Nature immersive experience brings together several organizations committed to conservation and sustainable development, including the United Nations, the David Suzuki Foundation, the Workshops for biodiversity , the Age of Union Environmental Alliance, the Palais des congrès de Montréal, Tourisme Montréal, WSP and National Geographic. The Experience is produced and traveled by OASIS Immersive Studios in collaboration with National Geographic. The experience had some truly gorgeous nature and landscape photography (I especially loved the first and third galleries), and I found it inspiring and entertaining and well worth the cost of admission. Definitely a great activity for a bad weather day or if you have some time to kill when other things have/are closed!
