Our dinner at Les Magnolias was an exceptional experience…read more Rather than doing the tasting menu, we opted for the standard dinner, in which every element (and there were a lot) was a statement unto itself. The amuse-bouche of radish on toast was a perfect opening for my own meal experience which had a heavy emphasis on micro greens and vegetables. There was a small flute of pea and lettuce cold soup. The staple 'chemistry-kit'-like sweet potato/white potato was something more than a starchy interlude, but a wonderful smoothie-like beverage that I could eat/drink daily. But the standout of my dinner was the foie gras, which was obviously phenomenal. First, because it's foie gras. Second, because great foie gras dishes can only be found in France. Third, because the presentation was so beautiful, it might have taken twenty minutes to assemble...it was 3 cubes, wrapped in poppy seeds, in the middle of a matrix of micro vegetables of every color in the spectrum, with a mustard-poppy sauce. A sublime dish of 1001 flavors supporting the perfect counterpoint of toasty seeds with creamy fat. I chose the lamb as a main course and it was paired with a single carrot. While perfect, I could have used a second piece, since in a dinner situation like this, my gluttony overcomes all reason. A dijon stuffed cookie followed, which was so simple and brilliant, my understanding of mustard was upended. The front end was very spicy, but the seeds, upon bursting were purely sweet and were a good complement for my current glass of wine, which was relatively dry. Four pieces of cheese followed and then dessert was the chocolate (pictured). What set this multipart chocolate celebration apart was the basil and vanilla gelato (under the middle cookie), which completed the garden-centric theme of the meal as a whole. I've been to a number of Michelin one-stars in the U.S., but nothing compared to the understated perfection of this meal. My next trip to Fontenay Sous Bois will absolutely include another visit.

Really Bad... Went there this Sunday for a family lunch…read more First we booked online and arrived to find that they had no records of our confirmed reservation (proof by text and email of reservation). After a bit we received a nice table by the water which made up for that. However, the waitress was less than useless. Took three reminders to bring water to the table (arrived 1h30 into our being there), forgot to place our order with the kitchen so it took 1h15 for our starter course to come. These came with 4 tiny pieces of bread (very stingy service) and 0 apologies, only that she had "told the kitchen staff off". The starters tasted ok but nothing special. After we had finished our starters it took another 30 minutes of more waiting to get our main course, and another 3 reminders for that too. I ended up being rather unpleasant with her at which point she went to the kitchen and miraculously came right out with our mains.... cold and overcooked! She insists again that it is a mistake from the kitchen and says they can re-heat the meat. No apologies whatsoever still on any count, just excuses one after the other and blame on other colleagues. As this was 2 hours after arriving and ordering we decided we had had enough and told her we wanted to pay for our starters and drinks and to go. The manager comes to see us and starts with the same attitude of blaming others and making excuses but once again not a single acknowledgement of the poor quality of service today. We tell him this is unacceptable and he agrees to lets us pay and go. Another waitress starts printing our bill.... with the mains included! I *snap* (it doesn't happen often) and tell her she is being very cheeky and to remove the mains as agreed. Again she blames the manager not telling her although she was right there when we had talked. She reprints it, we pay and we leave. Still only excuses, and no apology. A very very disappointing lunch, poor food, extremely bad service, not one iota of commercial acumen and understanding of customer service. Would not recommend. Too late for further excuses or an apology at this stage as I would not return.

I loveee this place. It's your traditional french resto with a great appetizer buffet and homemade…read moredesserts. The salmon is always excellent if you love a good piece of fish. The chef is a sweet old french man whose there every day working his butt off along with his Portuguese, spit fire, wife. No bs in this place. Oh and the best part is - it's cheap for the amount of food you'll eat. DIG IN.
