I don't care what some of the hipper locals have iterated about this bar being a bit old fashioned, I love this place. Yes, it has that blue-collar patron vibe to it, yes, it probably hasn't changed much since the early 70s; but it's a great place for the budget-minded student or tourist, and even better for people watching right on the Blvd de la Liberté if you want an authentic 'bar zinc' experience.
If it rains (which it does a lot in Lille) you can still eat/drink outside under one of their immense awnings. Unfortunately, I can't write about the cuisine because I kept missing their (limited) food service hours. I understand from several others however it's a #1 destination for the banker/professional lunch crowd as witnessed by the myriad of haute bespoke suits departing after 1:30 pm.
The owner (Jean-Michelle) and staff (Nadja) are helpful and cordial, though as a tourist expect to speak, correctly pronounce and understand some basic français.
