I highly recommend him and can't say enough good things about…read morehis work. They say West Virginia is "Wild & Wonderful"--the "wonderful" being the beautiful landscapes, but unfortunately for me, the "wild" got to be a little much. Out of the blue, I received a phone call from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force letting me know there was a warrant for my arrest for two very serious, violent felonies. At first, I thought it was a joke... it wasn't. The Marshal was actually a reasonable guy, and we arranged a date and time for me to turn myself in. He couldn't tell me the exact details, just that they were serious charges. A coworker recommended Mark Sutton to me, and Mark got straight to work: he found out I was being charged with two counts of malicious wounding, rescheduled my surrender date so he could go with me, and immediately secured a bond so I could bail right out. Once I knew what was going on, I thought, "I can prove I wasn't even in the state when this happened! I don't need a lawyer--I'll just explain it, show proof, and it'll be easy." I couldn't have been more wrong. Navigating the legal system was a nightmare, and I saw pretty quickly that without proper representation, the truth alone wasn't going to save me. I was facing decades in prison for a crime I didn't commit, and there was a very real possibility of being convicted regardless of my innocence. Long story short, hiring Mark was the best decision I made. He was able to get two violent felony charges carrying significant prison time negotiated down to a single misdemeanor with zero jail time. Was I innocent? Yes. Would I have felt comfortable going to trial in a West Virginia courtroom without him? Absolutely not. If you find yourself in trouble in West Virginia, Mark Sutton is the attorney you want in your corner!

I hired Bottner & Associates to help with a post-divorce court order modification and a child…read moresupport dispute initiated by my ex-wife. While I'm thankful I ultimately retained my authority in matters of legal custody of my children--which was the most important outcome--my experience with the firm left me frustrated and disappointed. I initially chose Bottner because he had previously represented me in a bankruptcy case following my divorce. That matter went smoothly, as it was relatively straightforward, and I expected a similar level of professionalism and support. Unfortunately, what I encountered this time was far different. Despite paying roughly $5,700 over the course of the case, there was no closing discussion, no wrap-up email from his paralegal Amanda, and no "thank you" or "good luck"--just a consistent stream of monthly bills. That lack of basic professionalism set the tone for much of my experience. At one point, when I chose not to settle when the petitioner wanted to, and instead pushed for a final hearing, Mr. Bottner called me personally. I had hoped for a strategic conversation, but instead, I was met with irritation. He accused me and my ex of fighting like children over nothing. This "nothing" was retaining my legal custody of my kids--a matter that, for me, meant everything. I was also billed for the unpleasant conversation, by the way. Days later, when it became clear my concerns were valid, he did offer a brief apology. But the damage had been done. The dismissiveness I encountered in that moment was hard to forget. Throughout the case, I often felt unheard and overlooked, as though my concerns were just paperwork to be processed. At times there was no responsiveness, and I genuinely wondered if anyone at the firm had taken the time to truly understand my position. Once my retainer was paid, the personal engagement vanished. Watching the 2014 documentary "Divorce Corp" during my case helped me put the experience into context. The film portrays a family court system that can feel transactional, impersonal, and indifferent--and sadly, that's exactly how this firm made me feel during the seven-month long legal ordeal. There's a saying (often misattributed to Benjamin Franklin) that justice isn't truly served until those unaffected are just as outraged as those directly impacted. I lived through the other side of that--feeling like the people who represented me didn't really care unless it involved an invoice. Yes, I won the core issue (the judge seemed fair). But how you're treated along the way matters just as much. This firm may be effective on paper, but if you're looking for a client-centered experience, you may want to look elsewhere.

We are very pleased with the results and would highly recommend this firm for will and trust creation. But there's a warning. You need to do your homework while you process the drafts and figure out what YOU want to do which may not be the easiest thing to do. Take the time. It took us more time than we expected (our fault) to review the draft documents. We did two hard copy drafts and one draft where we just exchanged the modifications. Now, I've worked with several lawyers in my career and up until then, I could honestly say that I had little trust/respect for the profession and it was with trepidation that we made an appointment with Marshall. I am so pleased to say that Marshall exceeded all our expectations and allayed our fears within our first appointment! He's a very warm and easy person to talk to and was so patient when answering questions or explaining things. It was a genuine surprise to find a lawyer we could trust and respect in such short order. Marshall kept in touch with regular status updates, as well as calmed our nerves with his extensive knowledge on the steps (plus average length of time) that these issues typically take to resolve. I cannot say enough good things about Marshall and the practice. I heartily recommend Marshall to anyone with similar issues -- you will not be disappointed with the results! (Thanks again Marshall!) (Note--We especially appreciated his willingness to give us an in-person appointment considering we were still in the midst of a pandemic and vaccines had not rolled out yet. Social distancing was practiced during our time there.)
