The actual cutting was just a minute or two. It's far more strange than painful. Then it's over. It's only a day or so before you're able to do things again which really isn't bad considering the benefits. However, it's been 3 years now and it still is one of the best things I've ever done for myself. Dr. Wasserman is INCREDIBLY kind, steady, patient, and knowledgeable. His staff is quick to remedy any issues that come up. I've been going back for eye checkups there ever since. Office is clean. Wait times are reasonable. Location is perfect. When she wasn't cooperating (because she's just over a year old and had been waiting for over an hour) he was getting more and more frustrated, stopped the exam, told me nothing was wrong and to try again in 3-4 months the when my daughter was a bit more cooperative. As background, I had PRK laser surgery ~5 years ago, and find it important to ensure everything continually looks fine. After moving cross-country, I needed to find a new ophthalmologist and Dr. Feldman was recommended by a friend. This was my first visit to Dr. Feldman and he provided one of the most thorough and informative eye exams I have ever had. He was very caring and had a good sense of humor, and most importantly explained things very clearly, using layman's terms and not just medical terminology. I was also impressed that he used an ipad to show me diagrams of the eye and help illustrate things visually! I was delayed in getting an appointment with him and instead went with another Dr, prepared to do IOL multifocals. Before committing I finally got to see Dr. Safran. He unequivocally advised against the surgery as he discovered an eye problem that had gone undiagnosed by the previous Dr., a problem that would have made the surgery pointless as, if it progresses, would lead to blindness if it goes untreated. Aside from saving me the time expense and pain of an unrecommended surgery, I am under his care for managing this problem and the surgery that will be needed to correct it if progressing. In short, under his care I should be able to avoid impending blindness. I can't think of a better reason to recommend Dr. Saffran.

The co-pay, because I have VSP, is $10 for routine eye exams. However, they charged me a $50 co-pay today. Why? They said that the doctor made some notes about glaucoma--so they have to bill my health insurance rather than VSP, and the health insurance co-pay is $50. I told them that I did not ask to check anything about glaucoma and went for a routine exam (to know if the power of my eyeglasses changed or not and the doctor did check that). That did not change anything. I wanted to talk to the office manager---the manager repeated their earlier argument that "because of the doctor's note on glaucoma, we have to bill your health insurance." I felt as if I went to a store to buy a cheap shirt, but they forcefully put a brand-name shirt in my shopping bag and forced me to pay for it. Maybe, this whole thing has to do with a recent change in the management and doctors there. I would go to another practice next time.

I know it sounds really silly, but apparently is more common issue than I thought after talking with the eye doctor. They were able to fit me in same day. Front office staff was nice and quick. Long wait times, inaccurate medical records, rude staff and billing issues--a summary of my…read moreexperience at Mercer Eye Associates. The doctor was fine, but the way the practice is run is AWFUL and makes it just not worth the bother. I wish I had selected a different practice for my eye issue. After multiple visits over 3 months, I can say figure on a minimum of 90 minutes for an appointment most of which will be spent waiting around. Your time with the doctor and techs will take 10-15 minutes max. The practice is aware of the problem and the 90 minutes referenced above was an actual suggestion from a staff member when after waiting for over an hour I asked how much longer I would have to wait since I was expected back at work. They truly are not interested in how long you will have to wait. In reviewing my visit notes before giving to another provider, I noted errors in the doctor's instructions for three separate visits. I always take someone with me to appointments to prevent "misunderstandings" so these were not my error. There was also two errors in my medical history. When I brought one of the instruction errors to the doctor's attention during my final visit, he said, "The records haven't been updated." This means that it takes almost four weeks for them to transcribe notes (which are actually entered in the computer during your appointment). Also, if you correct the staff when they read the incorrect note, they make it clear they are not happy with you and act like you made the mistake. Almost two months after my last appointment someone from the billing department called saying there was a problem with my insurance. They were very rude and demanding and said "you have to call your insurance company and YOU have to tell them....." As it turned out there was an error at the insurance company, but the rude demanding attitude was definitely not appreciated. Front desk staff can also be quite moody. Sadly, while the doctor I had was very personable, the overall practice experience prevents me from using this group again or recommending them to others.
