This place is great. My family has faithfully been enjoying their guava cake for years now and evangelizing as well- I now have 4 friends who order guava cake on their birthday and I can't even say they copied me because I stole my favorite birthday cake from my friend who also didn't do it first. I usually take things to go but this past weekend I sat in to study and it was really nice inside very airy open bright. The kind of lighting that keeps you awake not because it feels like a casino but because you could be outside on a hike! Alice was at the front counter she was great! Wonderful recommendations from her and a very genuine personality :)

I have been here a couple of times now when I'm in Berkeley to get maintenance on my cars. Need to get here early because it is very, very pull out your laptop and work or goof of friendly. One person had 3 laptops up and running at once. Reminds me of my Intel days working from the bar in the morning. Outlets everywhere and it fills up fast. First and foremost it's a bakery. The bread selection and other bakery items look amazing. Back in my carbo days I would have had several of everything. I will admit I fell of the wagon and had "Eggs on a Raft" this morning along with my coffee. As you could guess its eggs on toast with a side of fermented veggies. I'll ease back into Keto on Monday since I know this being Friday, the weekend is going to include all kinds of blastfomast food and drink. They report to be a European and French style bakery. I was thinking about buying some bread to see if it lasted more than 2 days to see if they used European type flour. In eastern Europe, espicially in Serbia, you buy bread every cople of days because it really rarely last til the third day. And guess what? You can eat it all day everyday and still lose weight and no insulin spike. Makes you wonder what the FDA allows in our food. So much for commentary. On the one hand my order took a minute but on the other hand the boiled eggs where done to perfection. The yolk just barely runny. The toast perfect. This is only accomplished because nothing is prepared ahead of time. All done in real time. It may take a little bit longer but for the quality it's worth it. The coffee is well, coffee. The place is a little hipster/Berkeleyish but we are in Berkeley and can't go against the grain or you won't survive. Would like to see a few more egg dishes. The staff is nice and attitude free which is somewhat different for Berkeley. The other plus is the music is great. No downer pop. All upbeat. All and all great place to hang out and people watch, read, work, goof off and/or, most importantly get cauggt up on Yelp

Lavender Bread & Cafe opened a few years ago where State Coffee was. Present decor is minimalist with live plants atop ledgers. 20ish tables within, 3 tables outside. Short line-moved quickly. Tables mostly occupied. Tightly spaced. Service quick, cordial, efficient. Offerings: coffee, tea, toasts, bagels, breads, cakes, cake slices, pastries, tarts, cookies... Sips: drip coffee (4.5) medium roast, black -four barrel coffee. Came hot, not bold, easy sipping. Dark roast not available. Passable brew. 4 stars worthy quality/quantity reasonable

I've been wanting to visit this cafe for awhile, and it didn't disappoint. They have a lovely selection of fresh breads, and I enjoyed my latte and delicious danish that they warmed up for me. Counter service was friendly and efficient. The cafe has high ceilings and was lacking in heat on a cold day. It didn't help that we sat near the door. The dessert case which I didn't photograph was quite sparse. But aside from those things this place is special, and they're clearly offering quality fare, so I'll be back to try more items.

My wife and I love checking out new cafes on weekends, and today we had the chance to try Lavender Bread & Cafe. We're familiar with the space, as State Bread and Coffee used to operate here. Parking is street parking only, which can be stressful on busy San Pablo Avenue. It's probably better to park in the neighborhood or along a side street if you can. We stopped by around 10:30 a.m., and there were a few people ahead of us in line. It's not the fastest-moving line, but that gives you plenty of time to browse the pastry and bread case before ordering. We skipped the kitchen-prepared toasts, which lean on the pricier side. The $10 toast trend that started at The Mill in SF is alive and well here. Most toasts are $10 and up, with the exception of the sourdough slice with house butter at $6. We ended up getting an Apricot Chausson ($5.75), a Baguette Sandwich ($14.00), and a Matcha Latte with oat milk ($6.25 + $0.25). The apricot chausson wasn't too sweet -- a good sign that they used real apricot rather than canned preserve. It had a natural fruitiness I really liked. The pastry wasn't very flaky, likely because it had been baked earlier in the day. My wife was especially excited for the baguette sandwich, as she used to get them often while living in France. For her, this one missed the mark a bit -- the baguette was too hard, and the butter had melted into the bread instead of being served as a cold slab. It's definitely French-inspired, but not a replica of what you'd find abroad. That said, as someone less familiar with traditional French sandwiches, I enjoyed it. The ham was thick-cut and flavorful without being overly salty, and the mild cheese reminded me of a Swiss. The matcha latte had a nice level of bitterness and wasn't overly sweet. They were generous with the matcha, and it felt light -- especially with oat milk. Overall, I had a pretty positive experience at Lavender Bread & Cafe. I enjoyed the food and drinks, and I'll definitely have to stop by again to try one of the delicious-looking cakes in the front case.

Pretty cute inside, great place to enjoy a drink and do some work. Matcha was enjoyable, however a bit weak in flavor and only slightly warm. Almond croissant had a great texture, I do wish it had a little more flavor, but it was pretty good for the most part :). I would like to come back and try the espresso drinks!

I come here specifically to get the avocado toast, it's suuuuuper yummy! The cafe itself gives off a college or workspace vibe, as the tables are pretty small and people are often on laptops. You can also watch them make the bread behind the counter which is pretty cool :)

I drive by this place all the time and finally stopped in! Lots of nice seating inside and it's a rustic, aesthetic space to settle in for a few hours. Free wifi is a plus! So many pastries and desserts on offer, it was difficult to choose. The workers are all super kind and offered many suggestions, I ended up going with an almond theme. Apparently their almond croissant is one of their most popular items, it was super flaky and generously filled. I also ordered their burnt almond cake to try, and holy moly. Layers of vanilla + chocolate cake with amaretto custard, covered in whipped cream and the most incredible candied almonds. Such a fun textural and flavor experience. For something savory, I ordered the avocado toast, which was anything but basic. It came topped with pickled radish, microgreens, sesame, and aleppo pepper, I thought the the sesame gave it such a nice depth. To drink, I went with a matcha latte. It leaned a little too milky for my taste, but the matcha itself was high quality. The real standout, though, was the affogato!! So rich and creamy, with vanilla ice cream (and even a non-dairy coconut option if you want it). Definitely a must-try.

I came here in the afternoon on a weekday to grab coffee, a sweet treat, and get some work done. I ordered the brown butter caramel latte less sweet and pecan butter toast. You order at the counter and pick up your coffee and food once they call out your name (self-service). They have a lot of seating available and most people were there to do work. It got pretty busy closer to 1pm. The latte was great, I'd get it regular sweetness next time so I can taste the flavor better. The toast was also delicious, it was essentially sweetened almond butter on toasted sourdough. Lots of bakery options too!

Pastries are inconsistently fresh. I came 2 weeks ago at 2 pm they were crunchy. Today 10/31 at 10:30am they seemed from the day before. When they become smooth and aren't crunchy no more. I've mentioned to the blonde worker she said she was so sorry, and thanks for letting her know.

Drinks and pastries were great! Cold brew isn't as strong, but their lattes and other drinks were great. Overall service is quick and helpful. Great study spot with lots of seating, outlets and natural light.

Stopped in for a few matcha lattes and was not disappointed! I got mine with almond milk -- I didn't even mention sweetener, but it came perfectly sweet, just how I like it. I can be pretty particular about matcha, but this one was smooth, flavorful, and really well-balanced. Service was quick, and the vibe was great. Lots of seating and plenty of people working on laptops -- a nice spot to hang out or get some work done. I'd definitely come back!

Excellent coffee and pastries. We loved our cappuccinos and wow the avocado toast with added feta and pickled onions was so good. The bread they have it on is really good. We also got the egg on buttered toast which again the bread they use is so good. Need to come back and try more pastries because they all look great. There is a good amount of seating but it's usually pretty busy

I first became a customer of Lavender Bread on Solano and was thrilled to hear they opened a new store on San Pablo specializing in organic breads. I tried their sesame EPI, and it was one of the best breads I've ever had. I also noticed they have a showcase featuring some of the desserts from their other store, which is great. Lavender Bread & Cafe has a rich menu with variety of delicious breads, pastries, and deserts. Their breads and baguettes are fresh and tasty. Their croissants and chaussons are very flavorful with perfect texture. I am also very big fan of their savory items like feta&spinach bistro and toasts. I ordered and paid for a large decaf latte and when I got my order I got a small size cup, so I told them I ordered a large, he said, that's a large! Made me look like I couldn't recognize a small and a large sized cup. RIP OFF! Their latte is no good either, very bland. read more

As a student I'm always looking for new places to get some work done and decided to try out Lavender Cafe. There's plenty of seating and outlets, and a nice ambiance for working. I got a matcha latte which was sweetened with an Okinawan Brown Sugar syrup and was delicious. They also had some enticing looking pastries. I got the peach chausson which was super flaky- I'll definitely have to come back to try more! read more

I've been a customer of Lavender's for several years. I love how the owners work so hard to create a warm and welcoming environment, which is especially nice in the post-pandemic world. I am addicted to their Wedding Cookies, and my partner loves the Napoleons. We recently tried their new baguettes, and were impressed. That's not an easy bread to make successfully in the hyper-competitive Berkeley bakery market. We truly enjoyed it. Last but not least, we visited their new location on San Pablo, and it is just as nice as their bakery on Solano. Wonderful coffee from San Francisco's Four Barrel Coffee Roasters (they'll sell you the beans but it will cost you, big time - worth it, though). I had the greatest oatmeal cranberry walnut cookie with my coffee - so good. Worth stopping in if you're on your way to Acme Bread in Berkeley's Westbrae neighborhood. read more

All the workers there rock , never in my entire experience walking into coffee shops have I seen a group of co-workers so connected in providing excellent service to the customers. The ambience is amazing and the pastries are perfect. My server w the red hair was not only beautiful but also incredibly hilarious. And my usual order of maple lavender is perfect every time. The couple that owns the store, Ali and Anya built a beautiful and welcoming cafe and I would more than recommend this place to everyone I know. Keep it up yall! read more

Good coffee, good food--however, I left there today because a customer had brought their dog in with them and the dog was barking so loudly that it was physically painful for me. The staff really should have asked the customer to take the dog outside--never mind the state law that says pets aren't allowed in food establishments. (Service animals aren't considered pets, BTW.) read more

The pastries and bread (which I was glad to see continued from States) are very good, but a warning to early risers that the pastries aren't baked on premises and aren't available when they open at 7:30. I was told they arrive around 8 or 8:30. (They did have some cakes). If you aren't looking for food first thing, it's a great place. read more

If you have a short time to grab a coffee and sit to refresh, I highly recommend going there. The music was at a good volume, which I appreciated since I can't tolerate loud music. read more

This place has really gone downhill. The pastries are impressively bad for a bakery: often squashed, always overcooked if not burnt to a crisp. Coffee is overpriced and often sloppily made, with a nice ring of coffee grounds on the lip of the cup. In short, something is just off with the preparation all around: idk if they lost a key baker or what, but the pastries simply are not well made, which is especially disappointing given the price. The space itself is beautiful, well lit, and has lots of seating, though recently they've tried to increase the seating by squeezing tables into absolutely every corner, including an isolated two-top hilariously and grotesquely situated right on top of the toilets. The constant staff turnover is also a red flag, and makes me wonder whether most of the problems with this location aren't just overly aggressive corner-cutting. With the local Hi-Wire out of business, however, I suspect this place will hang in for a while. Hopefully they'll get back to the quality of goods they offered when they first opened. read more

I work for uber eats and I was helping the owner set up their account to start taking delivery orders. Him and his staff were EXTREMELY nice and offered me tons of items to try out. I was there for about an hour or so and you can tell the staff really cares about their customers. I came back again as a customer and ordered my mom a loaf of the olive fougasse and she's been begging me to get more ever since. read more

Lavender Bread has been a great place for me to come, catch-up with some friends, while having some fresh baked goods and amazing Coffee! All of their baristas are super friendly and always attentive. They have a wonderful selection of different flavored lattes that my wife is a big fan of. If you want to sit outside and enjoy the nice weather, they have a few seats to do so. A great addition to the block! read more

This is to correct misleading reviews about a quality Berkeley store. Lavender Bread & Café, located on San Pablo Avenue (near University), features some of the best bread and pastries I've ever had. In fact, after my first couple of visits, I realized that in order to have enough for house mates after returning home, I'd have to buy two loaves of each instead of one. The first time with sesame bread and the second with French fougasse, I had eaten most of the loaf before getting home ten minutes away. The Sandwich loaves, Country bread and Spelt baguettes are perfect for toast, sandwiches and even plain with or without butter. The pastries are imported from sister store Lavender Bakery on Solano Ave, where I visit each day for coffee and a biscotto or slice of lemon poppy-seed cake. In fact, only one review out of the fifty on Yelp criticized the baked goods and that clearly was from a person whose only desire was to see his name in print. The very few 2-star reviews actually loved the baked goods, and only complained about service. One review said "the pastries are delicious, especially the Apricot chausson, Carrot muffin, Pain aux raisins, Sour cherry, cheese chausson and Madeleines." Another cited the "delightful array of traditional and innovative pastries that often shine in their simplicity and flavor." If you went to States Coffee, the prior occupant, you probably experienced what States reviewers called "slow and erratic service," so it's important to note here that the owners of Lavender are not responsible for this. They generously let the former staff keep their jobs, where many new owners would have fired everyone. They should not be penalized for this kindness. In time, with the usual turnover of employees, I'm sure that visitors to Lavender Bread and Café will be greeted with the same friendly and competent staff as at its sister establishment, Lavender Bakery on Solano Ave. And the breads? Terrific and just as good as the artisanal loaves that sell at nearby Andronico's for $12 apiece, twice the price of Lavender. Now please don't buy up everything - leave some for me and my friends. read more

My favorite regular menu drinks: Ube Matcha, Banana Matcha, Pistachio Matcha, Kyoto Fog, Egg Coffee. Their matcha is always beautifully green and balanced, and the foam on top is delicious no matter what flavor you get. I highly recommend their popcorn chicken and pandan waffle as well. Whether you need a matcha fix, a caffeine boost, or are craving something sweet or savory, they have something for you. Side note: I've been waiting for their "Corn Cloud" drink to return. I've never had corn milk in the US, and I always miss out when they have it on the menu lol.

I'm about to stop tipping, I'm sick of it. Maybe I'll try a pour over or "tasting" someday and give 'em a chance to show their personalities. But I doubt it.

Finally got around to the review for Lavender bakery: "This review - in addition to having some of the most amazing baked goods - is truly about the service received on Thanksgiving morning. We had placed an order the week before to be picked up that morning.. and when I arrived to pick it up, there was some confusion and our order wasn't prepared for us. Now keep in mind, it's complete chaos with the place being full of people trying to pick up orders and buy whatever is still available at the shop. They could have easily said, sorry, we just can't help you and turned us away with a refund. However, the owner himself took time to let me know that they would start the ovens up and bake it all within the next couple of hours and deliver it to our house. THIS was just exceptional, above and beyond service and earned our repeat future business for as long as their doors remain open! Completely impressed!! Stopped into Lavender Bakery on San Pablo after my walk because I wanted something sweet and immediately noticed how full the display case was -- tarts, macarons, turnovers, cakes, and so many other pastries to choose from. I asked the cashier what she recommended between the caramel cake and another cake option and told her to surprise me. She ended up choosing the dark chocolate cake, and honestly it was the right choice. The cake was beautiful -- almost too pretty to eat -- but the layers were rich, decadent, and not overly sweet. Also the perfect portion size without feeling too heavy. The price point was surprisingly reasonable for the quality and size. I've been to another Lavender Bakery location before, but I honestly liked this one better. It also has a really nice coffee shop vibe that makes you want to stay awhile. After having stumbled across the Solano location recently, I decided to stop by this location since i was in the area and needed a place to get some work done. It is great to find a place that has a lot of dine-in tables and accommodation for laptops! It's hard to find that these days! I got the avocado toast with feta added on the sandwich loaf slice and their honey lavender latte. Both very yummy, but I especially liked how dense and hearty the bread was! I tried their sourdough bread and baguette. They were fresh and soft with the correct crisp in their crusts. The manager did say that I should consume the baguette within a day else it may not be that delicious. That's exactly what I did and enjoyed it. They are a caring team of people and they know what to do not only with respect to baking delicious products but also to take care of customers. Their coffee and cakes are equally good as well.
