She was also incredibly time-conscious, making sure I felt fully cared for while staying right on schedule -- which I truly appreciated. You could really see her natural caring ability and how much she has grown in both confidence and technique. She was knowledgeable, gentle, and intentional with every step. I felt completely taken care of and genuinely relaxed the entire time. My skin looks and feels amazing, and I left glowing -- inside and out. If you're considering a facial here, do it. This was hands-down one of the best skincare experiences I've had, and I can't wait to come back. This school is really bringing talent to the industry!

I've been going to Paulette for over 5 years and have always had the best hair experience. I get compliments from strangers at malls, work and at party events. Very professional and lovely environment. I would never switch to another salon. My mom introduced me to Paulette years ago. Paulette trained my mom (a cosmetologist as well) on new trendy styles etc. after my first visit, I was hooked onto Paulette's magnificent highlights, haircut she did to my hair. I am really impressed by Paulette's mastery how she blends colors to make my hair look so pretty. I have definitely gotten plenty of compliments over the years regarding my highlights and layers. Paulette is truly really great at what she does. She also has a big heart!

There are parts in the book we should do practically to help prepare us for this growing beauty industry but the school doesn't provide us with enough materials so the whole class can participate. With that being stated our teachers are constantly being removed from class to talk to administrators about "why the class isn't working". Most of the time we are either watching others cut, read our books, or do nothing at all and talk about things not relevant to school. As a Barber student, it's difficult to practice your blade theory without enough clients walking into the school. One thing we learn about is going outside to look (fish) for clients around the school, which helps us down the road when we start working in a booth renting shop. The schools famous quote is "the school isn't to teach you how to cut, they just need you to pass state board exams". Which in reality isn't enough when you're paying this high tuition, and you want to take this career seriously. Due to the fact that the school is so lenient that when they try to put rules the rules are forever changing daily causing chaos for administrators, teachers, and students.

What makes this place special: Very affordable pricing thanks to the student stylists. Instructor oversight and check-ins throughout the service, giving you peace of mind while helping students learn and gain experience. A true win-win experience--you get a great haircut at a lower cost while supporting the next generation of hair professionals. Experience with different hair types, which is especially valuable. As someone who is Asian with thick, straight hair, I've been consistently happy with the results and appreciate that students get exposure to a variety of hair textures and styles. Pro tip: Treat yourself to a mini facial or scalp massage. It's incredibly relaxing and turns a simple haircut into a self-care experience. Overall, Walk With Scissors is a hidden gem. The combination of affordability, instructor-guided student stylists, and excellent customer care keeps me coming back. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quality haircut while supporting students as they develop their skills.

I used to get my hair cut at an Aveda campus in Florida and loved seeing students! I didn't select a preferred student ahead of time, which is good because I got switched around last minute. I'm so glad I ended up in Allison M's chair because she worked absolute MAGIC on my hair!!! I went bold and opted for a full highlight, haircut, blowout, and curls. I wasn't sure about what tones I liked or how exactly I wanted my hair cut, but Allison and her teacher were amazing at suggesting what would look good with my hair type and base color. I showed them pictures of highlights I liked and things I didn't like about my previous color/highlights. Full highlights are a long process, so bring snacks and a good attitude. I had a blast talking to Allison all day. The other students were so kind to chip in and help with things when needed and were fun to talk to as well. You cannot beat the price of the services here ($5 haircuts??? $65 full highlights???) but PLEASE remember to tip these students as you would anywhere else.

I got my makeup artist license from the Chesapeake School of Makeup Artistry in Annapolis back in…read more2001 or 2002. Since then it has moved (to Arnold) and expanded to become the Chesapeake School of Esthetics. The program was excellent and in fact I moved from Minnesota to Maryland to get my makeup artist license from CSMA. At the time the school was a one woman operation, with Betty J Wilder acting as admissions office and instructor. According to the website there is now at least one other staff member onboard. I attended the 40 Hour Makeup Demonstrators Program. We met once or twice a week and the program was completed in about two months. We learned about color theory, face types, skin undertones, makeup applications, and good sanitation practices. I also took a one day followup seminar on photography makeup. Betty is an invaluable resource when it comes to knowing about people, trends, and companies in the beauty business. She is kind, friendly, approachable and absolutely hilarious!! She also introduced me to Paula Begoun's books and debunked many skincare myths (see my review of Paula's Choice skincare: http://www.yelp.com/biz/paulas-choice-renton-2#hrid:TB6hGsxic3s0_7YlZANAug/src:self). My class was maybe ten people at the most, which ensured every student got as much attention and information as they needed. Students ranged from people just interested in cosmetics to people already working as makeup artists. The final exam involved a written test and makeup application demonstration. Though the makeup artist license is not a full cosmetology or aesthetician license, I learned alot, it helped me get a job with two cosmetic lines, and I still get a discount at Sally's Beauty Supply! I highly recommend this program for someone solely interested in makeup, and not hair, nails, waxing, or skincare. Just be aware of the limitations of the license, as many salons will probably prefer someone with a full license. This program currently costs $980. I can't say much about the 600 Hour Skin Care and Makeup Artistry Program as Betty was just getting the esthetics program started when I was at CSMA. According to the website, the program runs for twenty weeks, enrollment is limited to eight students, and the course includes lecture/theory and hands on labs. Topics covered include: Facial and Body Treatments, Facial Massage, Skin Analysis, Hair Removal, Makeup Application, Skin Care Equipment , Color Analysis, and Retails Skills. The cost is $8,750. There are not many schools or programs like this in the country (believe me, I looked at almost all the possibilities) so if this is your specific area of interest, I highly recommend the Chesapeake School of Esthetics. See the website for more details: http://www.education-csma.com.
