Caribe Hotel concierge lead me to Las Tortugas Adventures. We were picked up at our hotel. It was a long ride but totally worth it! We arrived 2 hours later in a small tow on the east side of the island. They were prepared and ready to get our adventure moving! We immediately signed waivers, got in our safety swim jackets and then were in our kayaks and heading out onto the open water! Very efficient. A few things to know: 1. If you are not a fan of the dark, this isn't for you. 2. Locals do not have to have lights on their vessels so you are in the dark and people can just be coming your way! It is slightly dangerous as you are in narrow water passages with mangroves sticking out. BE CAREFUL! To avoid a boat we ended up in the mangroves! 3. Bring a towel and even better a change of clothes because it's a wet 2 hour van ride back to the hotel! The bioluminescent experience is based on the weather the last few days and how dark it is when you are there. It is quite a sign to see! Imagine your hand glowing as you pull it out of the water for a few seconds! Amazing that this is nature. Well worth trying! We had fun even if it was a little dangerous and at moments tense (kayak traffic and dark in small water passages.) Upon returning to the loading dock, there were bags of chips and water. We were out for awhile so there is no option for dinner but make sure you haev it lined up upon returning back to your hotel you know where you can grab a late night meal.

Brian was our guide. He was great, good instructions, great info on the bioluminescent bay, pointed out the constellations to us and was a nice competent person. Not so great? The other people on our tour who don't understand what single file means. Also at a certain point you are kayaking through pitch black in a mangrove canal with other kayaks coming towards you and those people are even worse than the folks on your tour. Nevertheless, it was AMAZING, 10 out of 10. You've got to do this once in your life. Just don't do it with your 19 year old kid who bosses you around because they think you are an idiot that doesn't know how to kayak.

It was too dark & difficult to get more pics but I'm not at all disappointed. Be in that moment, forget the pics. :)

Magical. It's the first and only word that comes to mind. The guides were extremely helpful & so knowledgeable- they love their job. What impressed me most was that even after having done these tours 2x night nearly every night, they were still just as inspired as we were. Be prepared to do some work; the current can be a bit strong in some stead's and you do paddle for about 1.5 miles to get the the bay, but if you take the early tour you see the beautiful of the canal as you get there, the trees & wildlife. Nature just envelops you & when it's full on dark, she then hugs you cozy & gives up all her secrets. It was a perfect evening, a little overcast so the plankton were especially bright with movement and yeah...the experience was something like never before. Thank you Alonzo & crew.

I recommend wearing water shoes as you'll have to walk through thigh deep water to get to the kayak. You want to plan your trip as close to a new moon as possible as you want to eliminate as much light as possible to really see the glow. Annoyingly there is a neighborhood above the lagoon with bright spotlights but facing the water way and lingering near the other side of the lagoon the bioluminescence is still very visible and a total blast. The guides even brought us a tiny jellyfish to observe and see how it glowed as it wiggled in our hands. I wouldn't even bother bringing your phone, I highly doubt you'd be able to capture the glow while holding still enough in a kayak. Navigating the mangroves was tricky because the guides blue lights were just bright enough the destroy our night vision and not see the low hanging branches. I would hope in the future that the guides would switch to red lights to make navigating in the low light easier.

There are dozens of other tour companies out there as well making it feel like overcrowded amusement park rather than nature. The mosquitoes and biting flies added to the misery. And then there was no bioluminescence to be seen. They said that's typical with all the climate change/light pollution. Really bad experience all around.

She said too bad we are full call the agency for a refund. We did not take a 1.5 hour uber just to be brushed she could have at least see if the other tours can help us out as it was already chaotic. They waited for people to all come in and then rushed us out. Once on the water the tour guides were really cool and helpful but sadly we didn't really see the bio illumination much. One they admitted to drop the anchor in the wrong spot and 2 it was a full moon so we needed to put a tarp over us to get as dark as possible and even then you don't see much. You're literally kayaking blind until you get to open waters get covered to not see much and go back in the dark again. We tried to make the best out of it but the lady in the front just ruined the vibe given our group was split.

(Bahamas and Jamaica are there other two) The first time I went there was only one company offering this type of trip. Now there are at least 5 other companies that will offer this. In other words, that's a lot of people in the water kayaking at the same time. So we got stuck behind a few of them that only slowed us down. However, if you enjoy kayaking at night, at times in the pitch black and seeing the bioluminescent lights in the water then this is the trip for you. It doesn't disappoint. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the whole area and it was easy to see he enjoyed his job. It was also sad to see the damage the hurricane had caused to the area. You will first start off in the bay. It's a 2.5 mile run through the canal. It's extremely dark and at times you need to watch for low hanging branches. Once you get to the lagoon, you and the others are put together where you will cover yourself with a heavy tarp in order to reach your hands in the water to light up around you. Highly recommended you splash the water into the kayak and in the tarp. It will appear as though you're watching fireworks. This adventure is approximately 2.5 hours long. You met at 7:30 pm. Given instructions and life jackets then in the water by 8 pm. Good luck and have a great time. They do take a photo of you that will be emailed to you later.

The Bio Bay was such an amazing experience that I feel fortunate to have been able to capture. The thing that was frustrating is both of us have experience kayaking while it was the first time for majority of the others. We chose the 6:30pm trip so we could enjoy the sunset before heading out to the bio bay. The trip into the bio bay was smooth, you move with the current. We got to enjoy the bio bay for about 30 mins with the tour guides going through the history. They were very interesting and funny might I add. On the way back, you are traveling against the current and this is where we started to get irritated because the inexperienced kayakers weren't paying attention to the guides and kept bumping into us and each other. We kept passing others who somehow kept getting themselves stuck in crevices that they had no business getting into because the guides literally tell you to keep in a straight line. All in all, it was a great experience and I would still rate it 5 stars because the tour guides really tried their best to make sure everyone was enjoyed their experience. We were told that only mirrorless cameras were able to capture the bioluminescence. I was able to catch it on video using my iPhone 13 pro max but it doesn't capture the essence in stills.
