Found out about this Mexican grocery store and taqueria in Joliet. It may sound like a sketchy combination but it was better than expected thankfully. Las Palmas is a dining area attached to the main area of the store where customers order enchiladas, tacos, or whatever. A simple process at the counter. There's a few choices of proteins. Checked out the menu at the counter. It's got mostly tacos along with a few other items. The menu was hard to find at first so we used some paper menus. After looking around it was time to order at the counter. It's about $2 each for tacos. Of course these are the street food style, and we got the Vegetarian Tacos. Just couldn't keep the stuff in the shells. These had beans, cilantro, cheese which I left off, onions, and tomatoes. Great place to find authentic Mexican. There's also a restaurant attached as well. Great Hispanic food and other household needs you can expect to find at fair prices. Store is mostly empty or just has mainly regulars. Had a serious craving for some tacos on the 4th (I know, I know), & most restaurants were closed. We were about to give up & just go home when we noticed this one was open. Yay! The employees working here were so nice. I had chorizo tacos with a coke in a glass bottle. I love it when they sell them like this because they taste SO good! My Mom had the ground beef tacos. Rio Grande is my fave lunch spot in Joliet for authentic Mexican treats. I was introduced to this little hole-in-the-wall last winter when the cold caused everyone at the office to crave soup. The homemade chicken soup not only included a comforting broth but two whole pieces of chicken! That one dish has brought me back weekly for everything from tacos, tostadas to fajitas and the rice with beans. Excellent. I just had the steak burrito. It was big! But anybody can make them big. This was very tasty. One of the best I've had. The commentary chips come with mild and hot sauce and a very hot pepper/carrot mix. The staff is friendly and the place is very clean. I'll be back! read more

This is my favorite restaurant EVER. I've been coming here for the past 10 years and every time I come, I get treated with nothing but respect. When you first sit down, you are given free chips and salsa (salsa verde & salsa roja along with pickled carrots & jalapeños), and sometimes they have molcajete salsa (my favorite). When I go, I order a tostada with machacado con huevo (dry steak & eggs cooked together) with everything on it (except lettuce) plus cilantro and onion. They have various drinks as well, but my favorites are either limonada (limeade/lemonade) or agua de piña (pineapple water). I also enjoy their steak tacos with cilantro and onion. Stopped in to the restaurant and ordered a steak burrito during the recent cold snap. The restaurant was clean and well lit. The service was prompt and polite, if a bit perfunctory, but all the employees were approachable. The best thing about Rio Grande though is absolutely the food. I spent $4 on a steak burrito that was made-to-order and excellent. The ingredients were fresh, the meat was seasoned well, and I was full and happy when finished. Also, I did browse through the grocery next door and it looked clean and well-organized and you couldn't smell the butcher. Basically, this place isn't a ~dining experience~, it's a great place for a good, hot meal at incredibly reasonable prices where you can easily pick up some necessities before heading home. read more

(Review for Meat Department) I didn't go to the restaurant nor do I shop for regular groceries there. The meat quality is great! The chicken (pechuga) and the skirt steak (arrachera) are among the best in the 815. Try the arrachera "por la maquina" through or run through a cubing machine to perforate the meat and have fat removed. Also try it fat on and not put through the machine. Marinate the meat in a mixture of lime, onion, black pepper, onion slivers, and of course CORONA! The price of meats not too bad but the rest of the store is a bit over price as if this was a neighborhood store with no other tiendas around. read more

TERRIBLE SERVICE! I thought one person was rude I figured OK but no EVERYONE was RUDE even 2 of the cooks were rude to me. The place was slow so 1 cook asked what I wanted, I had a big order so he waited for the waitress which was fine with me then they were upset because I asked how a certain meat was prepared if it had a green sauce or red sauce because their menu didn't specify would've left this place but I had already paid I will NEVER return. One of the cooks rather the other cook that was rude came out to my table I was with my two-year-old he asked why are you sitting here this table is reserved don't you see the sign it's in English and in Spanish I said oh my two-year-old doesn't read she's the one that sat there while I was standing. read more

I think the taqueria might of gotten better overtime as this encounter fared better than the last. The al pastor torta was amazing! Heavy on the pork, which had a spicy bbq taste to it , which made it good in my book. Small portions. High price. I had 3 steak tacos and they all fit in one hand. Loaded with fat and grizzle. Tacos had an over all bland taste. The hot sauce was good how ever. I won't be returning I will go to Los Comales or Casa Blanca across the river for some taste and proper portions. read more

I went there at 8:00 pm and the sign for the restaurant said they are open until 9:30 pm. They refused to serve me because they are closed. The waitress said that they close early two days a week. Then their store hours should say so. Their hours are false advertising. Whatever hours are listed is what they are supposed to go by. I won't go back again. read more

Pretty decent food. I usually get the carne asada burrito. They're on the smaller side in comparison to other restaurants in Joliet. The steak has a great flavor, but not always the best quality. The hot sauces are fantastic and spicy. read more

Great little grocery store with the added bonus of a taqueria. It always comes through in a pinch when I need an ingredient and the pots already on the stove, do to the fact that I live around the corner. That being said, it is very small. They have a limited selection of things there and if you need to do an extensive shop and you'd like to do it in a Mexican supermarket; el guerro is right down the street and it's much bigger. This is the second time I come and visit this place, and in both occasions they over-charged me and tried to get away with it. The first, we had ordered two dishes that came with tortillas. We only got one set of tortillas. So we naturally ordered a second set. They charged us for the second order. We then explained to them that the second tortillas was supposed to be included with our order. After a bit of some explanation/complaining, they acknowledged their error and didn't charge us. After couple months, we decided to come again. And sure enough, our bill had a misc charge of 1 dollar. We asked about this, and they told us that it was because their rice and beans fluctuate in pricing. Yet, we have a separate charge item for rice and beans. So when we pointed this out, waitress went back to talk to owner. They then insisted that this was because when we order for take-out they charge differently for rice and beans. This didn't make sense at all and we insisted in getting this removed. They ended up charging me the dollar and returned me the dollar via cash. When we got home, it turned out that the burrito we had ordered was wrong. Although we had asked for a chicken burrito, they gave us a steak burrito. Thankfully you can clearly see in the receipt it was supposed to be a chicken burrito. Since we only live a couple blocks away, we went back. The owner was rude and pretentious and refused to give us our money back. We no longer wanted any of their food. In all fairness, their food tasted good, but not worth the hassle. read more

Taqueria has the bes authentic and delicious mexican food.. I love the "gorditas de desebrada" and the "burito de asada". It's very clean and they have very good service. read more
