Sweet and very knowledgeable staff attending the small visitor center. The grounds are well kept.

It's an interesting place to stop in and check out. A former port site during sugar cane days, it's got a lot of history. Cool waves crashing on the rocks, so pretty!

So according to the 101 Things to Do in Hawaii, this was THE place to go to do some whale watching. No such luck. We also saw a sign to be careful of the monk seal, but no monk seal sighting either. Fail! First off, be careful when using your GPS to find this place. GPS took us in a circle for a little bit. As long as you stay on Highway 270 you'll be fine. Just follow it until you get to mile marker 14. You'll see the big sign for the park. Despite the high winds, it was nice to find this small hidden park, though. It's a one mile walk through this place (which the sign says takes 45 to walk through). I think there's supposed to be some kind of guided tour because there are number markers throughout the path, but we had no idea what they were there for. When we parked, there was a small office looking place that was closed. We went on a Sunday, so maybe they're closed? Not sure. We just followed along the path in hopes of seeing something cool. Definitely a nice place to check out the ocean if you're not from Hawaii, but if you are, there are definitely nicer places to visit for an ocean view. Plus, we saw no whales as the book promised, so that was disappointing. Can't blame the book, though...whales were just playing somewhere else at the time. We did catch some whales popping their flippers and tails out of the water on our way back home, though. Just keep your eyes open along Highway 270 and pull over to the side when you see them for a fun view!

So beautiful! We loved stopping here on our explorations of the island. It's a bit off the beaten path so it was quiet. The information in the park map is very good and showcases the park and it's history well. We enjoyed exploring what life might have been like in this village. Highly recommend the stop.

Located off Hwy. 270 along the Kohala Coast, my brother took me to this 265-acre park which is the site of an ancient Hawaiian settlement. It's a pretty easy walk with paved trails. It was founded back in the 1300s and amazingly, the village was well-preserved. The land was very fertile but it was also rocky and windy. If you have time, this is a great place to learn about some of the first settlements on the Big Island.

A quick stop while exploring the north-side of Big Island~ Pretty interesting to see an old Hawaiian Fishing Village i presume or an old Hawaiian village. So take a quick stroll around the place but be-careful things are old and the houses may collapse on you! There are parking spot here so take some time to walk around !!! : ) There is nothing much but since you are up there just take some time to sight see

We really enjoyed our time here. There is a trail that offers beautiful views of the Koai'e Cove. If you stop in to the Information building, you can get a pamphlet to take with you on the trail. It will point out certain landmarks along the trail about the 600 year old fishing village.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Wilson and the Mauna Kea Summit & Stars excursion…read more Wilson was incredibly well spoken and knowledgeable and I learned so much! He did all of this while navigating steep roads (not all paved) and feeding us amazing chicken stew, cookies, and hot cocoa. This was a truly memorable and magical trip and the weather was just perfect! Everything was well organized and I cannot recommend them enough

The color of Mauna Kea with the moon shining on it was so magical all around us. There were some clouds that cleared pretty well by the end of our star gazing. We were the last ones up there so it got dark enough to see more than you'd expect with the moon. Jeff, our awesome tour guide, used a laser pointer to help us see the constellations we usually can't back at home. The images on the digital telescope like nebulas, the moon & star clusters were an amazing addition to have as keepsakes. My husband and I felt he made the tour a great balance of learning and fun. He had the group feeling like family before we even left from the pickup lot. Things to consider: I do recommend following the moons cycles booking this tour/your trip if this is especially important for you to see as many stars as possible. The sunset and views of the observatory's make it awesome anyways :) I struggled with altitude sickness around 12,000 ft. Jeff had made sure to let us know beforehand if we experienced any issues to speak up. I was hesitant as I know it would mean turning the whole tour around, but some tingling turned to dizziness and then a brief fainting. He immediately stopped the bus and helped ground me and make sure I was completely okay & coherent before letting me know our options for the tour. We made it up to the top with 2 more (included in tour) stops and I felt better with each one having more time to acclimate :) Thank you Jeff!! You handled this so professionally and I appreciate your check-ins for the rest of the trip. It's cold even with parka and gloves. It's so worth packing warm shoes and layers. The bus had ac and heat so that was great! Do it if you can! Awe-inspiring! Such an unreal environment that makes you wonder about so many things. Just take the precautions seriously, move slow and breathe deep.

Make sure to give yourself ample amount of time to find parking as it is limited and not easy to find. No bags allowed- but I was able to bring in a transparent bag. The sun is very bright here so bring an umbrella and lots of sunscreen. Water and a cooling towel will help a lot. A lot of the options like the battleship and aviation area are separate areas that are an additional cost. We were there to also see the Oklahoma and Utah memorials through the Hawaii park and rec website. The 4/5 was because you cannot access the entire location without having to pay.

The walk in line was so long, I can't imagine all of the people in like actually received spots by the end of the day. Must be hours of waiting for this free exhibit. With reservations and coming in during your time frame, you should get in within a decent time frame. You sit in an auditorium and learn a little bit about the exhibit prior to taking a short ferry over with a guided park rangers the whole time. There may even be a veteran answering any questions you have. The exhibit itself is open, so if it's rainy, maybe prepare an umbrella. The time slot allotted for us at USS Arizona felt like more than enough time for us to look around, with the ranger giving historic background. Back at Pearl Harbor, there are a couple other museums that require tickets to enter. We walked around to learn more about Pearl Harbor with the road maps.
