For the past few months my friend and I have been eating at different Thai restaurants in the area. After we had tasted the best salmon red curry from Lao Thai, we couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks. Last night we returned for our second time and devoured their delicious pad see ew and red curry with duck. It was amazing. The pad see ew has hints of smokiness and is sure to be a crowd favorite. It was my friends first time trying duck and Boua was so loving to make sure that it was up to par. We had Boua as a server. She was literally amazing, the best, nicest, most helpful server I've had in a long time. The food was also so bussin. Even if we hadn't gotten Boua, the food is so amazing I would have had to give this place 5 stars. The Tom Kha was amazing, the egg roles were so well done, and the beef lamb was new and exciting. Delicious. Hard to go wrong ordering, but if you are not vegetarian, the Lao Sausages are something you might not have tried elsewhere. The pineapple fried rice (not overly fried) is a nice compliment to some of the spicier items. I recommend you try this restaurant with the new owner who is a relative of the previous owner. The new owner made us feel like we were her good neighbors coming over for a delicious home cooked meal! We are picky eaters and she was so accommodating to provide recommendations and also adjust the dishes to suit our allergies and preferences. We REALLY appreciated that and she did it with a smile and gracefulness and ease I've not seen at another restaurant for years. The food was delicious and well-presented. I'd definitely come back repeatedly for the same dishes and to try the rest of the menu. Tip: If you want just a hint of spice or no spice be sure to ask for mild/no spice. We had a person at our table who likes mild and she enjoyed her meal. I like spices. Lao Thai is our go to Thai restaurant in Albany! They are always consistent in their friendly service and delicious food. Their servings are LARGE and the price is very reasonable. I always get spice level 2, and my partner gets spice level 3 (on a scale of 1 to 10), and I can't imagine what 10 is like. The waitresses were really good with making sure you had everything you needed, and making sure your orders were taken and your glasses of water were always full. -I had the Lao Sausages with pork, chopped meat, cilantro, and lime leaves. The Crispy Fried Rice Salad was really something, I never had it before and I ordered this both times I came here. The rice was crispy and it tasted heavenly with the pork inside. Hidden behind a giant tree, this place is easy to miss when driving down Solano. The menu is a bit random with sections for soul food and organized so that it begged to be read thoroughly and not just skimmed. Not the best way to organize a menu when it's family style dining. We got deep fried sweet potatoes as an appetizer ... which sounds better than it tasted. The batter was sweet ... not actually the sweet potato. Also got a tofu dish and a pork dish. The tofu ( Pad Pak Raum Mit) was good, but the pork in the Pad Priew Wan was chewy and not very tender. Despite the descriptions of the food being different, it pretty much felt like the same dish. I was looking for a place to eat on Solano after realizing that I've only visited the area once in my 3 years at Berkeley. Luckily, my roommate is from Albany and recommended this place to me. I've never had Lao food before, so I was hoping that I would see something on the menu that I've never seen at a Thai restaurant before. We came in with a group of 8, and the waiter had trouble finding room for us, even though the place was peculiarly empty. We started off with something I get at every Thai restaurant, the Tom Khai Gai, or coconut milk soup with chicken. Their version was decent, but definitely not the best I've had. It was missing lemongrass, which is an essential component that adds the oh so necessary flavor of this dish. All of the other dishes were what you would typically have at a Thai place, so it was nothing too special. The portions are quite large though, so make sure to bring an empty stomach! The service however, was pretty crappy. The waiter had a hard time understanding our orders and just looked lost the entire time. It definitely didn't feel like the inviting atmosphere I heard so much about. Overall, I'd recommend this place to anyone who lives close enough to walk to it, but probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back again. read more

One thing that is very important for me personally is the customer service and how the staff greet me as I enter the restaurant. The waiter was amazing, friendly, helpful and patient. He greeted us as we opened the door with a welcoming smile. He helped us to order 2 vegetarian dishes and served the Brown rice in a cute silver pot. They had the best iced Thai tea and he even told us how to make it at home and where to get the tea from unlike some places that never tell you how they made the food or what gives the food such a flavor. I went for lunch on a weekday. I was the only one there. They were located on lower Solano Ave in Albany, CA. They have a $10 minimum for use of Visa or MasterCard. There were 7 items on their lunch menu. I ordered a Thai Iced Tea and the Shrimp Salad. It took over 15 minutes for my salad to come out. I heard a lot of chopping and frying and women's voices in the kitchen. The server wore a 49ers stocking cap and a down vest. The salad had about a dozen medium sized shrimp with the tails on. They were still grey. I think they were marinated in lemon juice, but were not put on any heated element. Kind of like a ceviche. The shrimp were on a large piece of bib lettuce with cut romaine on the side. The dressing was good. I ordered the salad Thai Hot and it had a little kick to it, but not much. Ever since moving to the bay, finding comfort food has been a constant struggle. Not that there isn't any restaurants that serve Lao food, it's a matter of will it taste like homemade comfort food or is it a posh dish that will cost me an arm and a leg. I can't speak for the Thai food on the menu but the Lao food was spot on. The Lao style papaya salad was a perfect blend of sweet sour and paadek (fermented fish) sauce. I order a 5 on a 1-10 scale of spiciness and it wasn't spicy for me so definitely aim for 7 or 8 for a kick. The Nam Khao which is deep fried rice tossed in a salad with fermented pork was delicious. I like the fact that it had the taste of laab to it which isn't usually the case when I've had it in the past. If you never had fermented pork it's an acquired taste and smell. The herbs definitely take your mind off of it but you'll get that whiff of it that can either make it or break it for you. The Khao poon was delicious. Ive always grown up having the Khao poon curry broth on the thin watery side but their broth was thick and creamy, which isn't a bad thing just a mere preference. A little on the sweet side so if you don't like that ask for some lemon or lime to balance it. I just threw some dried chili flakes on mine and it tasted like home for me. If you never had it before, definitely do order this noodle curry dish. It's a classic Lao dish that you have to try once in your life. The food was great. The customer service was fantastic. The lady who waited us was nice and talkative and I'm glad she's trying to focus more on Lao cuisine. Even though there are similarities between Thai and Lao food when I think of comfort food Lao dishes instantly pop up for its homey heavy and deliciousness all around. And she was nice enough to give me coconut juice on the house. This will definitely be my go to place even if I have to drive from the Southbay for it. read more

My BFF and I needed a casual, wallet-friendly and quiet place to have dinner and catch up. Of course, I wanted to choose a place that served decent/good food too (don't waste quota!!), so after much Yelping, I found Lao-Thai Kitchen. Thai food, who can say no? When we got there, BFF realized she's been there a few times before and liked it a lot. Good. The menu had lots to choose from, many familiar Thai dishes were available. We got their famous pumpkin curry (with prawns), the papaya salad and the Larb salad(with chicken.) Pumpkin curry - definitely fell in love after one bite. Soft (but not mushy) pumpkin (I think it was kabocha squash?), prawns, zucchini squash, green peas and broccoli soaked in thick, creamy, sweet, coconut milk-based curry. It was really delicious. One of the best pumpkin curries I've ever had! Papaya salad (Som Tom) - shredded green papaya and carrots with garlic, tomatoes, ground peanuts and spicy lime....really refreshing! It was a good balance of sweet and spicy. Larb salad (with chicken) - the server recommended this over the Yum Talay salad. It was tasty, but nothing too special. Again, it felt really light. I think I should have had the Yum Talay.... Mid-meal we regretted not getting any rice...because it would have been so good with the curry sauce. But instead, we used the curry sauce as an additional dressing to our salads. In fact, we ended up mixing all three dishes together and thought it tasted even better. Haha. Service was OK, not bad not great. The only thing I can possibly complain about, though not really a big deal, was that they didn't ask if we wanted dessert and just handed us the check while we were still eating - the house wasn't even full yet. Small gem serving southeast Asian food. Sure they serve your usual thai dishes which are all solid, but you would be selling yourself short if you don't get the lao food. Angel wings here have a deep sweetness to them that are unique to this place. The nam kao (rice salad) is the best I've had as it blends more fresher flavors. The larbs here really shine, especially the fish version which is very uncommon. Finally, the roti fried banana ice cream dessert alone with worth the trip out here. Great little spot, quick efficient service, surprising flavors that offer a different but familiar twist to your favorite and soon to he favorite dishes. And great prices to boot. read more

This is the place to go during SIP! Thank goodness they are still open because my family needs our LTK fix. The food is consistently good, and every time we go in, we ask for a new recommendation. Still smelled of mildew. I should've left but just wanted a quick bite. I ordered a Thai iced tea which was bizarrely sweet to the point of being almost bitter-perhaps from a fake sweetener? I told the waitress (whom I had to call out for because she was in the back yapping with a coworker) and she said someone else had said it wasn't sweet enough-yeah, right. Her only solution was to add more milk and tea. Then came the Pad Kee Mao. Ugh. It was an unappealing white with three small pieces of red pepper and big pieces of chicken. I don't often leave reviews - basically never - but I wanted to leave a review for this place because it is So Good! We had Duck Larb Salad, which was solid, and Tom Kha Gai soup. The soup was slightly differently done than almost all Thai places I've gotten it before, but here it was better- it had a delicate balance of flavors, and lots of different kinds of mushrooms. We also had the Pa Nang Curry with duck which was just incredible- mushrooms and vegetables and great spices. We ordered everything mild, but there was a nice little bit of heat in it. There was something about the taste of everything that felt so distinct and foreign and authentic - it was like we were traveling in Laos. This is now my favorite Thai place in the Bay, and, frankly, the best I've had. So great to find this little place! read more
