But, we needed an overnight stay in the Lake District and took the chance of another Travelodge. We arrived with great trepidation. What a shock. The receptionist was cheerful and friendly. Booking in was carried out swiftly and we were given a room in an annexe of about 24 rooms. First impressions of walking in were of the cleanliness and brightness. The room was immaculate with a large comfy bed, plenty of room. The bathroom was clean, bright and with plenty of towels. Next door was a Little Chef for breakfast. A wonderful hotel and our ideas of Travelodge have changed.

Accommodation is of the usual good standard that you would expect, and at least there's a choice of two eateries adjacent to it - although I suspect they actually share the same staff and cooking facilities. But first off, it's cold up here: so, to take advantage of either of these two excellent options to explore the stunningly beautiful foothills of the Pennines you need to visit it in the summer months. Not much you can do about the weather but to me, it also came out as pretty expensive. £200 for a fairly small but very well equipped two room suite in the main building is, in any out of London location, top end. Add on the £60 per couple for the perfectly enjoyable four course evening menu and £25 for a bottle of wine plus coffees etc. and you're into close to £300 for the night - £250 (with food etc.) if you choose to stay in the high quality but rather motel-like rooms behind the main hotel/pub. And, the guest facilities are limited: apart from a small but well furnished private lounge the only other option is the often very busy bar. Too much? Yes but apart from The Rose & Crown there aren't many alternatives in the area. Would I go back? Difficult the weather is a big factor in Teesdale. Get it right and you'll have a wonderful stay in an idyllic setting get it wrong, and you'll be paying a lot for a cold, rain-soaked time in what's a well appointed but pricy country pub.

There were a couple of small TV's showing one of the music channels. To the rear of the pub there's a dining area which seems to be set up for a carvery type of service. To be honest on first impressions there isn't really anything that would particularly draw me back to the Wheatsheaf, the other pubs we visited in Corbridge on that day simply had a more convivial atmosphere in general.

Lanercost cottages are set in the grounds of the 12th century Abbey. The walk to these falls is lovely - not long, around 500 metres I'd say, through lush bush. It's a…read morepowerful waterfall and worth the stroll. It's very busy too. At first I thought it was weird to charge people to see a waterfall, but it makes sense as the track to the falls is well used so it needs to be maintained. The ticket price is minimal anyway (1.5 pounds). The car parking will cost you more. There's toilets, a cafe, ice cream shop and pub at the car park. The road to the falls is a nice drive.

A couple of friends took us to this local beauty spot and we were very impressed. Apparently it's…read morethe biggest waterfall in England; whilst it's big, it's not huge, but nonetheless it's certainly worth a visit. We went on a hot summer's day and it proved to be a great place for the kids to explore -- there's plenty of rocks to scramble over etc. Having said that, it's not a place without risk: the rocks can get slippy because of the vast amount of moisture in the air, and of course ther's a fairly big drop by the waterfall itself. There's a well-marked path down to the waterfall and the place is well cared for. All in all, a good place for a walk with the kids on a warm day. I notice Qype lists this place as a hotel; there may have been a hotel on the other side of the road, but if there was I'm afraid we didn't use it. Inevitably, perhaps, there was a place that sold ice-creams though!

The food was all excellent and could not fault it as well as the service, which while slow was due to food being cooked rather than heated up. Lovely little place in a small village in Northumbria. The…read morestaff was very friendly and polite. Overall, we enjoyed our stay - there are a small details that could be improved (for example, it's a bit cold in the bathroom) and no kettle in the room (however there is an area where you can make a cuppa yourself), but the biggest bummer for me was that the breakfast is only till 9 which was not ideal on a holiday and especially New Year's Day. But honestly, excellent value for money and breakfast was good indeed.

What an amazing place!…read more Blink and you might miss one of Northumberland's true hidden treasures. It's only a small inn (4 rooms) but each room is delightfully appointed. I was fortunate to get a tour of the rooms by the owner and they were spotless and modern. The pub itself serves cold beer with a warm atmosphere. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The prices were reasonable too. But the food is the real star here. British classics and local favourites professionally prepared. The evening I was there the place was packed and every plate was empty at the end. Oh, and free wifi too!
