This area is not a natural island, but a strip of land which was abandoned when local rivers were dammed, flooding some settlements and leaving this land. It is not technically a park, which means that while it is under NPS, national parks passes don't help you much, and they allow hunting. The visitor center I stopped at wasn't overly substantial, and while the option to pay for a wildlife drive was given, I managed to see a herd of bison for free by driving south through the park instead. A variety of outdoor activities were available, some paid, but I didn't find a whole lot that was immediately gripping. read more

This place is beautiful! Stayed October 26-28 weather was warm 75 but got rained out Saturday. Stayed at Energy Lake campground. Very nice. Was 30 feet from the lake, the staff was nice. Went Horseback riding at Wranglers campground and Whitney our guide was wonderful and gorgeous! Ate at Patties settlement. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. Food was outstanding. Pricey but delicious and worth it. read more

This place has a special place in my heart. Hematite Lake is a good lake to visit and the hike there is nice. And the Nature Station is a good place to visit, too. The staff is really nice and knowledgeable. Several of the animals there are there because they wouldn't be able to survive in the wild on their own. read more

We were looking for a new place to go with the dogs that wasn't too far from Nashville. A friend suggested this park to us, and it is worth the drive! There are so many little nooks and crannies throughout the park. There are spots for everyone! There is hiking, fishing, boating, site seeing, and camping. There is also a buffalo and elk reserve that is $5 per car. You can drive around as much as you would like. It was too hot to see any elk, but there was a large herd of buffalo. There is also a neat visitor center that has a bunch of pamphlets with everything there is available to do. It is also dog friendly! We found a small trail around a lake and walked the dogs around it, and part of the trail was in a marsh so there is a boardwalk part of the way. There is also an ample amount of picnic tables and areas. If you are looking for a day away in nature this is the spot for you! read more

Very beautiful piece of land. The elk and Bison refuge was awesome, it's like entering Jurassic Park, wish I could upload my video. Lots of primitive camping well taken care of campsites. The only complaint I had was the amount of empty skoal and bud light cans. I guess the people using those products don't care about much. Lots of cool roads to roll down and get dirty. Had lots of fun here, wish people were better but that's with everything. read more

One of the unsafest and uncomfortable campsites I've been to. We stayed at the Sugar Bay campground. Next to us was a large group in tents who had the very loud music playing until 4:30 am. At the end of loop and in front of the toilet was another large group in cars (not trucks or campers)in the dark. We only first noticed them because we drove up there to see if we could camp there. Girls screaming, cars speeding away (on dirt road), fights going on all night. Definitely not camping activities! Had we known the area, we would have gone to another campsite. Although I can't say it would have been any better! It's a shame because the area s beautiful. read more

The highlight is definitely the buffalo and elk range (though we didn't see any elk). We went swimming and the water was pretty nice. Didn't do too much hiking but the habitat looks pretty cool. Not the best in terms of hiking trails and activities but it's chill. Stopped here while on tour with my band Primal Feelings and we were happy we did. We love Land Between the lakes, under two hours from Nashville, two Lakes, Barclay and Kentucky. Two Buffalo and Elk Herds, you can see them up close,and drive the two mile loop round one, lovely in Winter with the snow. Woodlands Wildlife Station, owls, wolves, coyotes, etc. An 1850's settlement to see how life was in the old days, lots of camping and picnic spots, historical grave sites, Planetarium, a quiet parkway to drive along and of course Pattis 1800 settlement I2" pork chop) at the North End, great at Christmas with Grand Rivers completely illuminated and Santa in his Sleigh. Such a beautiful area. It feels so pristine and loved, and the terrain and nature is so unique. What a pleasant surprise! The area is gorgeous if you want to hike, just drive, camp, whatever. They have a lovely Buffalo and Elk preserve that you can drive through. That was so lovely to see these animals in natural habitat, living their lives as they would have centuries ago. The planetarium is a nice touch, and the staff at the visitor's center was friendly and helpful. The little museum they have there doesn't pull any punches and tells the whole truth of the area. More than that though, for nature lovers, it just *feels* wonderful, in that way that can't be expressed in words, but you know it instantly when you arrive. read more

Finally found my favorite place to camp! Beautiful backcountry camping with minimal amenities. The place is well taken care of and the other visitors were all respectful. Three day camping pass is $7. There's some great back roads for dirt bikes or jeeps. Multiple water access points too! There are also a lot of cemeteries, which I haven't quite figured out why but it's an interesting quirk. No houses actually on the land. You'll need to go to the northern end to pick up the camping pass. read more

Between two the Kentucky Lake and the Bransen Lake lies America's only inland peninsula: Land Between the Lakes. If you're driving through Kentucky, it might be a good idea to stop here to check it out. Miles of wilderness offers the opportunity to fish, camp, explore, and see animals in designated sites. I've only been once, so it would be best to stop by the visitor's center or the website for more info. I went to the Bison and Elk observation trail. It was $5 and you drive around trails into fields with bison and elk. Since it was snowing, most of the elk were hiding in the trees. The bison, however, stay together in a huge pack for the most part. So, we didn't see much elk, but the bison were pretty cool. They weren't irate when we were there so that was another plus! read more

This park really does not have to much to offer a Nashvillian. There are campgrounds, fishing spots, pioneer living history and birdwatching spots all closer to Nashville. There are also grazing pens for American Bison and Elk, something fairly rare in the East Coast, but for someone who has visited Yellowstone and Yosemite it is just not really special. Camping, fishing and hunting seem to be the specialty here. A living history complex, The Homeplace 1850, is also apparently popular as well. I drove the entire length of the park, and found no hiking trails and little else but picnic spots, campgrounds and cemeteries, and if the attractions stated are the highlights of this park, they are somewhat disappointing. There are many more amazing places in Kentucky and Tennessee to visit such as Fort Donelson immediately to the South. At least its free. read more

Beautiful area. My husband and i stopped here on our way from northern Wisconsin to Nashville - renewed our vows after 20-years together. Don't come in the winter time or early spring time. There is not much to do. We wanted to visit the planetarium, but it was too cloudy to see anything. We wanted to go kayaking, horseback riding, and ziplining, but in March, all such activities are unavailable. We did however go for a two-hour hike and see elk and bison up close. Overall though, we still had a good trip. The lake was absolutely beautiful. read more

I would give this place a 5 + if I could. There is so much to do! If you have a family and enjoy nature this is def. Something to check out. The nature station which features a Minnie local zoo and education was a grand total of $6 for entrance for my 7 yr old and myself, that's an all day pass people! including extra activities. The day we went, the naturalists were going out to tag monarch butterflies we spent the whole day with a group of wonderful people and stopped at different locations. The homeplace; for my 7, myself and mother was a grand total of$ 10, it is a fully functioning 1850 farm which you get to explore, men make shingles and work field, women cook and cure meat, seriously AWESOME even if ur on a budget. Then there is the bison and elk prairie.. $5 for a car load. Elk make calls and the bison get so close to your car its honestly a bit nerve racking. I recommend move your car if the bison herd looks like the keep getting closer. But truly this place is special, check it out! read more

Great place to visit. Be sure to swing in to the visitor's center. Clean joint. They have a planetarium, a good little historical center that will walk you through the local area's last hundred years. For the most part, you'll find good folk at the visitors center, they even did an extra show in the planetarium because we missed the final one. Fun stuff. read more

What an awesome spot. We came in the Winter and therefore the off-season, but it was still gorgeous. Miles and miles of scenic drives and campgrounds and other sporting activities. Nice visitor center with a cute little gift shop. Definite highlight was the Elk and Bison Prairie drive. Apparently the other reviewer never got off the main road so he didn't find all the hiking trails, the Nature Center or Planetarium. The Homeplace offers a different program each weekend March through November showing various aspects of life back in the 1850's. Sheep shearing, planting gardens, woodworking, training oxen and this is just a very small example. The Nature Center also offers a different program each weekend. It's a great place to learn. A great place to camp and fish. Bring your horses- there is a Wrangler camp. Bring your 4-wheelers. There is a place to ride. Stop at the visitor's center and get a map or you'll be missing a lot. read more
