A little bit of paradise in Utah. I was looking for some things to do in the downtown Salt Lake…read moreCity area during our vacation when I spotted Hawaii Fluid Art at random. I thought this would be a great activity for my LTP and I to do, so I booked a reservation online. We live in Nevada, and their website mentioned that it would take a few days for the artwork to dry completely, hence the fluid art in their name. We were going home the day after the class and we would not be back in time to pick it up, and luckily for us, it was feasible for them to ship our canvas back to us. I think they said that we would get our finished paintings in about a week and a half. I booked for 5/29/26 at 5:00pm and chose to do a small canvas ($65/person plus other fees). Depending on what you're doing and how big your canvas is, it can get messy, so make sure to pack some clothes that you don't mind getting paint on. We packed some shirts that we didn't mind getting paint on, but to be fair, it really didn't get all that messy since our canvases were so small, so it's ok. One thing that I really liked is that we were the only people in the entire class, so this basically was a private session for us. We were asked to choose three or four pint colors of our choice, which was easy for me at least. The first thing we were instructed to do was pour white paint on our canvas and cover it completely by moving it around with our bare hands or by moving the canvas around using the pegs on the bottom. Once we emptied out the cup of white paint, we were shown a technique in which they call the 'blurp blurp' technique, where you pour your colors of choice into the empty cup one at a time for two seconds until they're all mixed in together. Before pouring our colors onto the canvas, we got to decide which design to use based on other designs that were made in the past. What I did on my canvas was pour my paint across the canvas and used the rest of my paint to make some lines from top to bottom and then move the canvas around to cover the white paint up, although some white splotches appeared later on, which is a normal thing to happen. The finishing touch was glitter, which we sprinkled around our canvas like salt. The glitter made our canvases even better. They came out really well and we can't wait to see them when they arrive at my front door or mailbox, depending on what shipping service they use to ship our canvases back. This class was short but sweet. We had a lot of fun here trying out something new.

Are you a creative type...someone that likes to make art? Whether you answer yes or no, Hawaii…read moreFluid Art is perfect for you. It doesn't take any artistic ability, but if you do have such a trait, you can put it to use here as well. What I'm saying is that anyone can enjoy this place-and you should! First, you select the size of canvass that you want to paint. Then, you select up to five paint colors. There are lots to choose from and you can walk around the gallery to see other art and get some inspiration. Depending on what style you like, you'll be guided by a friendly staff member on how to pour your paint onto the canvass and then tilt it in a way that will achieve your desired outcome. It's a fun process and a bit mesmerizing to watch. For an extra fee, they can add resin to the finished piece, which will make it shiny. It certainly makes the colors pop and I'd recommend it. My only complaint is the price. Sure, you're making a one of a kind work of art. But the price point is steep and will certainly eliminate some people from participating. But if you can swing it, I'd recommend you save your pennies and give it a go.

BoxCar is one of those "hidden gems" that you may not even know exists. I thought I knew everything…read morethere is to know about Salt Lake City, but boy was I wrong. How did I not know such an awesome place exists? For one, it can be difficult to find--especially at night. Either it was dark and I suck at seeing (both of those are very true but shhhhh), or it really is THAT hard to find. BoxCar is incredible but can almost be overwhelming because there is SO MUCH stuff in there. I believe it is a warehouse with about 30,000 square feet but there is definitely 40,000 square feet of things in there...but that is also the beauty of it. The artists are able to turn anything into something; there is patterns, there is abstract work, there is EVERYTHING. They have some cute animals that roam the building every once in a while and the people are all friendly--it feels like a family. My favorite art piece at Box Car was the stack of TVs. It was like nothing I have ever seen before and I just found it fascinating that they were able to come up with such a unique design. The highlight of my trip at Box Car was without a doubt, the light show. How freaking cool?! I can't imagine how much work it took. They had so many awesome elements during the light show as well including the water, wind and sounds. It was not just lights. They also had an awesome display at the front of the room. I just cannot imagine how much work goes into that light show and it is one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. I would go back to BoxCar just for the light show!

I visited BoxCar studios a few weeks ago and haven't stopped thinking about it since. BoxCar…read moreStudios is a place that fosters a community for artists by creating an environment where everything belongs. The studio is whimsically eclectic and wildly fascinating. Wandering around the studio  invoked a childlike wonder and deep sense of curiosity in me that I haven't connected with in years. Their careful collection of so many things I never knew existed combined with other things I was able to get reacquainted with felt like an "I Spy" book come to life and I was absolutely in awe of their thoughtful curation every second of my visit. The environment feels like the best fever dream you've ever been in where you're transported to a collection of attics of the coolest people you've ever known combined with a workshop, a tattoo parlor,  a bar, and an antique store. What I love most about this place is the community they've created that has an underlying notion and bold notion of making sure everything and everyone belongs. Every single person I met was interesting, welcoming, and genuine.  Essentially, BoxCar is a place that demonstrates a tangibility to the idea that just because something is discarded by one person, doesn't mean it's not valuable to another. I felt like I entered a different and more magical world in a different time, taking my mind off anything else that seemed pressing in my life. This place isn't trendy and not everyone will enjoy it,  but if you love originality and character, this is the place. I found it insanely cool and I could not have possibly enjoyed my time more.
