If you aren't acquainted with my personal views on Catholic wedding ceremonies, seek out the 'Z'…read morekey on your keyboard and hold it down for three Mississippis. Maybe even four. That said, I watched two of my best friends get married at this church last Saturday and it wasn't... half... bad[1]. Being in the wedding party helped combat any soporific feelings, but I gotta say: for an edifice constructed to remind me about my failings as a human being, I mostly enjoyed my time there. It's easy to miss this spot on Plains Road East; there are two entrances if you speed by one. The westmost driveway leads to the larger parking lot which is information our limo driver probably craved. The smaller parking lot probably has room for five cars at most nad our driver had to undertake a twenty-seven point turn to reorient an absurdly long stretch Ford Expedition. It was impressive. I'm not sure what size churches are supposed to be, but this one struck me as fairly modest. Almost immediately upon entering you are in the vestibule and bapistry, where a glass partition divides you from the congregation. The church itself has about 10-12 rows of pews divided by an aisle so I would estimate it seats about 160-200. The architecture was quite modern, with an asymmetrical placement of a cross above the altar (DARING) and an interesting wooden sculpture depicting either the Holy Spirit, or weakass Marvel superhero Ghost Rider's flaming head. (You heard me nerds. Ghost Rider sucks.) The wedding was officiated by Father Trzupek who strongly resembled the current pope Ratzinger. He had a hint of a mitteleuropäische accent, though I suspect/guarantee he was actually Polish. Either way, he ran a tight ship and kept the ceremony light and breezy. The whole thing clocked in under an hour from soup to nuts. From my previous experiences with the C-church, this is like Mach 2. Or should I say Mark 2:20[2]? Ha! I kill me. (Though this is officially proscibed by the church.) An amazing ceremony, and congratulations to my dear friends Geoff and Christine. I hope never to return here. Obligatory Title Pun: Nice APSE! [3] Menu Readability: All they have on offer is the body of Christ, and I'm not allowed to eat it. Need to mention: An extra star for the married couple. I'd hesitate to say "I'm a fan." What this place teaches me about myself: PAH-LENTY. _____ [1] Said in that bright ascending way people might use when surprised by a new brand of yogurt. [2] "But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast." [3] Actually, they don't really have an apse.

How cool is that! People of African descent began settling in the St. Catharines area around 1788. They brought their religion with them. Many were followers of Rev. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism who was a staunch abolitionist. They also followed Bishop Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. An AME Society was established in St. Catharines between 1814 & 1820 and a small chapel was built to serve the faithful in the Queenston Street area. When construction on the first Welland Canal (1824-1833) began, most of the community relocated to the Geneva, Welland and North Streets area. After the US Congress introduced the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, many free and escaped African Americans relocated to various parts of Canada West. The Black community in St. Catharines was increasing rapidly with so many refugees arriving by way of the UGRR. It was soon realized that a larger church was needed to accommodate the growing AME congregation. As a Methodist meeting house, the Salem Chapel also provided aid and temporary shelter to the newly arrived African Americans. It would also host many anti-slavery meetings. Built by African American freedom seekers, the construction for the third and present church began in October 1853. With its 195 members in attendance, Bishop Daniel Payne of Cincinnati publicly dedicated it to the service of Almighty God on November 4, 1855. The most celebrated member of the Salem Chapel is the legendary Underground Railroad "conductor", Harriet Tubman. During the height of the UGRR movement, Tubman also fled to Canada because of the American fugitive slave laws. Harriet Tubman's last stop along the UGRR was St. Catharines, Canada West. She was a frequent resident between 1851-1861 and a highly revered member of the community. When living in St. Catharines, Harriet Tubman attended the Salem Chapel, BME Church. From St. Catharines, Tubman would return to the South to rescue those who were daring enough to escape from bondage.
