Diggin' It!…read more However, for full disclosure, we went rather late in the fishing season (mid July) for optimal fishing success! We stayed at El Vado Lake State Park, rolled in on a Saturday afternoon and there were a fair amount of campers there at that time. However, most were recreational boaters, skiing and such. But by Sunday night they rolled out and we damn near had the entire campground, and lake, to ourselves. It was awesome! During our weeklong stay we only caught about six keepers (small mouth bass), but tons of babies! Early Spring must be awesome fishing, and according to the nearby Ranger, right after the ice thaws it's amazing! Duly Noted! The campground is very nice with decent showers nearby, running water and each site has really nice sturdy covers to keep out of both the sun and rain. If I were to list a negative point it might be the fact that the bank is rather steep and rocky. So bank fishing isn't the greatest, but we plan on giving it another go earlier in the season. And so should you!

He took me up 8 miles to fish in the mountains as well as many other places to fish, that as new fisher and not aquatinted with the local area, I would never had known about. Tom taught me how to cast and walk in waders and by the end of the day I was able to drop my fly is spots Tom told me to drop it. I even got three hits on my line. Made us all look like pros. Some of the route was a little scary, near & overlooking the edge of mountain. But the horses did great guiding us safely through it. Brad was our guide and took us to the South Fork of the Rio Grande on the other side of the continental divide. Although it was a little dry this summer, there was enough water to hold fish (even though they were on the smallish side). Brad was extremely patient and helpful, especially with my teenage son. It was an absolute blast! I have NEVER fly-fished before, and I caught 3 "GOOD" sized fish - 13, 14, and 15 inches. Thomas maxed out with an 18-inch rainbow trout. Jamie was our guide, and he was just the absolute best. He allowed Thomas to do what he does, as he has fly-fished before, while still giving him pointers that helped him get better. Jamie was SUPER patient with me, gave me great pointers, was super informative, and even held my hand as I crossed the creek. I mean . . . c'mon! I got to meet the owners of the land we fished on and they were great--super kind and very genuine folks! I even got to see a MINK cross the trails and took pics of the geese and their goslings in the lake! The views were magnificent. Call ahead, and you get to choose if you want to fish for quantity or quality. We voted quality--hence the bigger fish, but fewer caught. We scheduled the whole thing online with ease, and Jamie called us back after he got off the water with prior clients. Honestly, when we go back again, odds are we will hit Jamie up again, but maybe more as friends, to go fish with us. Britt, the owner, met us before we headed out for our float, and we just casually conversed until it was time to go. Our outing coincided with a group of 25 Boy Scouts, so we could've been quickly lost in the shuffle, but Socia held us back and let the kids get way out ahead of us, so we felt like we were all by ourselves for the majority of the trip. She was so considerate and engaging and made it feel like we were on the river with an old friend. At the end of the trip, Britt met us again and hung out while we ate just casually conversing as if once more, we were catching up with an old friend. Thank you, Socia and Britt for the memory of a lifetime! Our little guy hasn't stopped talking about whitewater rafting on the Rio Grande.
