There are several different COE parks on Lake Bardwell which is just outside the little town of Ennis. We stayed at the Waxahachie Creek Park. With a National Parks card for seniors, this park is just $9 a night. It's hard to beat that. Plus, it was on a lake with a view and the sites were nice sized without a neighbor right at your door. The sites in our section were all pull-thrus. A couple might be a little difficult for a big rig but most were easy in and easy out. Electricity and water are at each site with a dump on the way out. Driving down highway 34 the driveway to the park is hard to recognize to begin with. Two of us missed it. It looks like a driveway so be careful. We loved the park and would definitely return if in the area again.

Our first visit to this park included a first-time, somewhat terrifying spotting of a feral hog on Bird Blind trail which was creepily overgrown, eerily vacant (reminiscent of a "ghost town"- it gave us a spidey-sense...not to mention a few cobwebs we stepped through) and full of rutted dried ground. The reason this was a bit terrifying is that a park ranger at another park had recently elaborated to me just how dangerous feral hogs can be--especially if you accidentally come between them and their young! Thankfully, we were able to keep a respectfully fearful distance from the hog we spotted and must not have come between it and its young cause we survived! Following Bird Blind loop, we took a short hike on the nature trail where I was relentlessly harassed by a horsefly which regularly buzzed by my ears and then landing on me--I fully grabbed the bug at one point trying to swat her away which freaked me out more. That night I learned that female horseflies diet on mammal (including human) blood which helped me to feel justified in my drop of spirits and frightened outburst on the hike. Despite having bug spray on, my sweat, bright shirt, movement, exposed skin, breath and simply being a living being with blood in my veins...made me a prime target for that lady horsefly's advances--she wanted to slice my tender skin and have my blood for her dinner. Thankfully we were able to redeem our first visit with a mother deer and baby fawn sighting (seeing that feral hog was pretty cool too), alligator gar spotting, sunset float and picnic dinner, and refreshingly cold showers before our drive back to Dallas! On our second visit, we did not return to either trail (maybe worth a try in cooler, less COVIDy weather/times) and instead stuck to the water as our main activity which made for a much more pleasant experience. I was even able to paddle over to the swim area buoys and observe a few terns and one double-created cormorant closer than I think I've been to most any wild birds in my life! We were then treated to sightings of a white egret and two great blue herons just before and after sunset which flew to the nearly-vacant swim area to hunt! To top all of that off, we took a small, post-sunset walk from one fishing pier (south boat ramp to the other-in day use area) which was enhanced by friendly small talk with fisherpeople on that South Boat Ramp pier/dock, a random, psychedelic arrow in the middle of the woods, a tribe of adorable scavenging trash pandas and two little boys exuberant over their dad's catch of a sizable catfish just as it got dark! This warmed my heart more than I can say--seeing a family making these precious memories and making me long to fish with my far-away dad again like old times!

It was spring so not too bad with bugs. There was a huge thunderstorm the first night so the ground was really soggy the next day. Our tent did not leak but the next day when the sun was out we unpegged it and turned it over for the bottom and the ground beneath to dry out. We had our dog and she and I did several walks on trails. The park restrooms were fine, they do a great job of keeping them clean. About the only negative thing was the erosion next to where we parked our truck, almost a 10 inch drop off but I see this a lot at Texas state parks. I wish the Texas state government would put more into maintenance.

Catastrophic Incompetence and Gross Negligence at Blake's Boats…read more My experience with Blake's Boats for a simple engine replacement was not just disappointing--it was an ongoing nightmare that exposed my family to significant danger due to corner-cutting, negligence, and a breathtaking lack of accountability. What started as a standard block replacement in early May 2025 ballooned into a four-month odyssey of failed repairs, dangerous electrical modifications, and outright managerial disregard. The quoted timeline of 6-8 weeks was the first lie, with the boat finally ready on July 26th. The first outing the very next day proved the engine was not ready at all: it died less than half a mile from the dock. This immediate, total failure was the beginning of an unacceptable cycle of runaround. A Comedy of Failed "Fixes" Upon returning the boat, I was repeatedly told it was "ready," only for their diagnoses to be proved immediately wrong. First, I was told the issue was "bad gas"--a transparent attempt to shift blame. When the boat failed again less than a mile from their shop, Jason, the owner, refused to even speak to me, sending out a thoroughly baffled Leroy, who admitted he had "no idea what was going on." The subsequent "fix" (a new fuel pump) also failed upon testing, demonstrating a complete inability to correctly diagnose or repair their own faulty installation. The final insult in this period came on September 20th, when Jason, having fired the technician Leroy (the only person I was told was working on the boat), delivered a final, incorrect diagnosis: a failing Ignition Control Module (ICM). He also returned the boat with two missing cushions and a vague promise of compensation. External Inspections Reveal Dangerous Malpractice It was only after taking the boat to two specialized Chaparral marinas in Austin area that the full, terrifying extent of Blake's incompetence became clear. Both independent inspections concluded that the engine replacement was performed improperly and/or the component installed was defective, as the engine is currently exhibiting an audible, loud rod knock--a sign of fundamental internal damage. Worse than the mechanical failure was the sheer negligence: Used and Rusted Oil Filter: A new engine block was fitted with a used and rusted oil filter, demonstrating a level of mechanical malpractice that is simply staggering. Dangerous Electrical Override: To keep the flawed engine running, Blake's had replaced the manufacturer-recommended 20 AMP main powertrain fuse with an oversized 30 AMP fuse. This dangerous, reckless hack bypassed the safety mechanism designed to prevent overheating, melting wiring insulation, and, critically, fire. Misdiagnosis: Both outside experts confirmed Jason's final diagnosis was incorrect; the ICM was working perfectly. The constant fuse tripping points directly to improper wiring of the new engine block. Blake's Marine delivered a severely compromised engine, attempted to mask their mistakes with dangerous electrical overrides, and demonstrated zero customer accountability. They took a simple repair and turned it into a safety hazard, wasting months of my time and thousands of dollars. The result is a boat that is now actively damaged, and their conduct demands the strongest possible warning to future customers: Avoid Blake's Marine at all costs. Jason never provided any warranty information. Their persistent failure to professionally repair the boat prevents me from ever trusting them or anyone associated with them that are capable of repairing the boat. These are the pictures of the boat this morning. There is an oil leak following their professional work.
