Tonight we had the fun privilege of participating in a live taping of Go Fact Yourself with standup comedian Jordan Carlos and actor/comedian Erinn Hayes at the Crawford Family Forum which is now the headquarters of KPCC 89.3, rebranded now as LAist. Parking is small on site so come early if you want to park there. Tickets were $20 for the privilege of choosing your seats first. The forum has a small auditorium with maybe 10 rows of seats so no matter where you are, you'll be able to see the stage well. The evening was full of laughter because not only the guests but the hosts, J.Keith van Straaten and Helen Hong, were all so quick witted and hilarious! It's basically a competition between the two main guests to answer trivia questions in an area of interest, which tonight was market bubbles for Jordan and the movie "Romancing the Stone" (1984) for Erinn. We also had special expert guests to corroborate their respective answers for more complex questions. For the market bubble, we had Anne Goldgar, USC history professor and author of Tulipmania. And for "Romancing the Stone" (RTS), we had via Zoom, the inimitable Kathleen Turner!!! Incredible! She is going to voice the donkey in the upcoming animated film of Animal Farm. It was incredible to hear her talk about her experience on the set of RTS--so poised and seriously funny in her own right! What a thrill! Loved every moment! So glad we attended! read more

I have listened to this station since my college days. Most of my morning commutes involve Larry Mantle and Austin Cross providing the insight I need for the day. And then there's Terry Gross, Kai Ryssdal, Scott Simon, Francis Lam, Peter Segall, Ira Flatow, Shankar Vedantam...and others throughout the week. Between their shows, announcements for live events would grab my attention, but then I'd forget. Recently, I made it an effort to remind myself. The first event I went to was for Go Fact Yourself with J. Keith van Straaten and Helen Hong and guests Michaela Watkins and Marc Summers. I've heard a few episodes on the weekends before and felt the jokes were hit or miss. However, the live taping turned out engaging and memorable. I used to watch Marc Summers on reruns of What Would You Do? and Double Dare, so seeing him in person got me nostalgic. In my opinion, his comedic timing rivals the best, particularly when Sam Harris appeared and the two recounted their days on Star Search. The second event was for The Memory Palace with Nate DiMeo who recently published his first book. The event acted as both a teaser as well as a live recital of previous episodes. I hadn't heard of his podcast before, but the short stories that were shared, such as one about Mary Pickford's dazzling roles during the age of silent film and another describing Florence Chadwick swimming across the English Channel several times, won me over. Each one of them tickling the brain as much as providing the slightest feeling of wistfulness. On a final note, the parking lot is cramp, so I parked on the street. Review #1000! I was thinking of where I should make my thousand review milestone and what better place than my very own local public radio station, KPCC! KPCC broadcasts local and national public radio programs and my first introduction was with Wait Wait Don't Tell Me from NPR (weekends at 11 am), but I've come to enjoy KPCC for their coverage of local and national news. If you have a chance, definitely sign up when they have their annual Open House. It's a fun day to explore the KPCC office, see how various facets of KPCC operate, and meet the on-air journalists and place a face to the voices you would normally just hear. I got to sit in on a mock newsroom editorial meeting, with some of the editors gathering actual live feedback from us on our thoughts about, say, Dodgers game coverage while learning how it feeds into other departments at KPCC. I also saw others try out the recording booth where the programs are broadcasted from. In addition to inviting the public in their office once a year, KPCC seeks out the general public's opinions to include in their programs. During November, they asked for our favorite holiday song and I responded with mine. They followed up with me and I ended up contributing a few minutes to their Take Two program, talking about my favorite non-traditional Christmas song (in case you are curious, it's Christmas Day from Jimin and Jungkook of BTS). We were there last night for One for the Books with Traci Thomas, Bricia Lopez, Javier Cabral, and Keith Corbin. Tasty bites courtesy of Guisados and pop-up shop provided by Now Serving. Wonderful intimate event - LAist giveaways, friendly audience, panelist signed books and took pictures. They had security checking bags. We got there early and were able to park on-site. read more

My wife and I donated our vehicle to KPCC and the entire transaction has been a complete nightmare. They mailed my wife's tax forms to someone else which's includes her identity information. I asked them to verify that my wife's identity information was not compromised and that they retrieved her tax document. They have failed to respond and verify they are either working on this or that it was done. This will be the last time we donate to KPCC. read more

KPCC is my favorite source for local and national news. Hands down. No one else comes close. So many other sources are just trash piles to sift through in search of news that will make me more informed and thoughtful. So many other sources can't be bothered with grammar, spelling and fact-checking. (I can barely bring myself to read our local paper; I often feel less intelligent after reading it.) I absolutely love this radio station. I listen to it in the morning when getting ready for work. I listen to it on my days off too. I guess you could say I'm a KPCC junkie. Many of my conversations begin with "I was listening to NPR the other day..." or "Today, when I was listening to NPR, I heard...." It's such a part of my vocabulary now I don't know what I did before I listened. Basically, I was an ill informed person. I'm not one to watch the network news much or even the all news stations. But I do have time to listen to the radio. So when someone introduced me to this station a year ago, I listened in skepticism because I didn't know what I would hear. But then I soon began to realize this is a great radio station to hear balanced reporting of issues and caller feedback. Not only do you get great shows like Air Talk with Larry Mantle, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Pat Morrison, or even All Things Considered, you also get to hear a variety of issues and news at various times of day that actually makes you think. That's what I like about this radio station. It makes you think. My favorite shows over the weekend are Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me and Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. I actually am disappointed when I miss one of the airings. But I should never fear because I can just go to the NPR website and pull up the archived show. Give it a try. You may like it, you may not. I listen regularly but to be honest, it sounds like banal, corporate drivel. But then, they constantly play commercials, oh wait, they call them underwriting but they sound just like advertising, from predatory lenders such as Capital One and oligarchical corporations like Disney, so what should one then expect? At least they play BBC World Service. Their political reporting isn't objective and they obviously support centrist, in the USA while they would be right wing everywhere else, democratic candidates and denigrate what they consider left but everywhere out side of the USA would be considered center left or center right candidates. They constantly hand wring about the clear front runner in the Democratic Primaries and still call him a "possible front runner". But votes count and so can the listeners. read more

How do you give a group of shows one rating? You can't but as a whole KPCC is doing a great job. Larry Mantle is the best talk show host in radio history. A-Martinez seems to only get excited about sports and just rattles through a list of questions prepared for him without really listening to his guest's response. The reporting staff leans very liberal. National coverage (NPR) is the beat source for news. The station seems to waste a lot of money which is the reason I do not donate. read more

SPOILER ALERT: It was a full house for Byron Hurt Filmmaker Activist Writer's Soul Food Junkies screening last night. Food reception (macaroni 'n cheese, potato salad, greens, black-eyed peas and BBQ tofu -- was my least favorite -- was catered by Stuff I Eat - Vegan Cuisine in Inglewood. The food was flavorful and delicious and I wanted more. The screening focused on the heritage and diet of African Americans. Hurt's Dad grew up on a diet of fattening, sodium-laden and sugary "soul food". After years of eating this way, Hurt's Dad became overweight and refused to change his diet. When Hurt's father passed due to pancreatic cancer, Byron took up the mantle to research the food that "we" eat and have a hard time giving up or changing to healthier versions. There were humorous comments throughout the interviews. We live in a 'microwave' generation and with neighborhoods populated with food swamps where healthy, organic and sustainable foods aren't readily available. Hurt and his peers recommend living an active lifestyle and focusing on healthy nutrition to ward off preventable diseases. It takes about 30 days to change a person's palate from desiring unhealthy choices to healthier food. I do like the events held at their Crawford Family Forum especially when Drucker School of Business and LA Live Talks were held here before moving to larger venues in Downtown LA. read more

MYYYYY GOD KPCC i remember you used to have a drive 2 times a year and you used to call them summer drive or vinter drive. Then you made it 4 times a year and kept calling them the 4 seasons. Now days your expenses are too high that you have a drive every weeks. And lately you having an eyes on peoples cars and trucks and some othe transportation vehicles, what im wondering is what is your yearly budget for this 4 to 5 shows you have and 4 To 5 hour of news that everyone can search and read it on the net and rest of the day you just repeat the same stuff so whats your yearly expenses and what do you get from goverment. I'll been listen to KPCC for couple years from now, my choice for news radio. What I like they don't put their own political views into the news as much as other radio station. They offer some news about oversea which most radio station don't cover. Such as BBC during some of the airtime. I always prefer FM over AM, better coverage and quality. KPCC got program just most people would enjoy. Their weekend program is still weak in my opinion beside the Car Guy. But is no doubt my favorite radio station when for weekday when commuting. They claim they are radio free, which isn't true. They do short commercial break from time to time, but is not distraction. Not everyone are fan of their fundraising air time, consider most of their funds comes from donation, it only make sense for them to do this. They didn't do fundraising draw during the election period for couple months. Small amount of their funds comes tax player. That amount is extreme tiny compare to most government programs out-there, this one we know where it goes. read more

Listen Los Angeles, radio music and talk is d e a d. Listen to some legitimate news for once and enlighten yourself on your ride home. Southern California Public Radio and NPR, baby. (I'm a bit of a news junkie) Memorable NPR/KPCC moment: ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, ETC reported: "Michael Jackson is dead! Everyone is mourning." KPCC (at the same time) reported: "We all know of the death of the great Michael Jackson, but how has this affected the jobs of Michael Jackson impersonators?" ha... amazing. "Talk of the nation" - interesting topics, opinionated callers, reporters do a great job of moderating. Radio journalist are efficient at reporting interesting events, issues, and trends that ARE NOT the things that big-dog TV broadcast news reports, where they simply may even re-report from one another. Fox News not only once, but a couple times, re-reported from "The Onion" (a parody news station).. I want to cry. That's one big sad joke! KPCC always puts another perspective to the subject, along with hands-on interviews, behind the businesses and the people behind it. Oh, and all this work friggen' FREE. I admit, sometimes the voices sound extremely soothing = makes me sleepy on the ride home. That's when I change the channel and crank up the reggaeton. I recently donated a car to this station. Blue book was somewhere around $1300 to $1800...I didn't expect more than $1000 credit...but I was credited with less than $350! I had heard the car donation services were rip-offs, but I was too lazy to deal with selling the car and I expected that KPCC would have selected a reputable vendor. I used the charity vendor that they advertise on KPCC. I feel like a fool. I think I need to start listening to WNYC online in stead of KPCC. It is a much better station and every time I hear the call letters KPCC my blood pressure jumps up. read more

I love public radio and for good reason. Its in depth and contemplative. Really gets into a topic and bites into it. The personal interest stories are really rich and not cheesy sob stories. The news is good, clear, and direct. And their sports reporting has come LIGHT YEARS. Did any one hear that piece they did on R.A. Dickey last year. Ok so there's some things I can't stand like "Wait wait don't tell" and "Prairie Home Companion." But other shows like "Freakonomics Radio" and "Snap Judgement" are amazing. Snap Judgement has to be my favorite radio show EVER! Those stories are UNREAL. I love public radio because its intelligent people, delivering radio to intelligent people, funded by intelligent people. It is also one of the last bastions of media uncorrupted by corporations. This is un-bought and therefore more trustworthy. Oh wait I bought it! I'm a monthly sustainer. In So Cal were lucky enough to have three public radio stations. This is my favorite. read more

They say our generation gets their news from Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show," but I get mine from KPCC. "All Things Considered," "The Loh Life," "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me," and, of course, "This American Life".....they're all music (er, in this case, talk radio?) to my ears. Even if you have no interest in economics, I think the ladies would enjoy "Marketplace" because Kai Ryssdal has a sexy voice. Tell me about those rising stocks again, Kai....rawr. My NPR nerdery knows no bounds.....I have even gone off the deep end and actually enjoy "A Prairie Home Companion." (Rent the movie and try to ignore the parts with Lindsay Lohan to start gaining an appreciation.) I might as well retire now because this proves that I'm already old. And I'm sad because they changed the time of "The Writer's Almanac" so I don't hear it coming home from work anymore. The only thing is, I can't stand "Car Talk," and yet I've heard that it's one of the most popular shows. Go figure. Me Gusta KPCC. I'm a bit of a news freak, and I trust NPR news sources more than I trust the AM news radio stations (I only go to them when I know I'm driving around the southland a-lot in one day and I need to not run into traffic.) The local coverage was rather good, especially when we had the wild fires down in Orange County last year. It's also the only NPR station in the greater LA Metro area to carry "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me" and "Car Talk." They also have Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" which is kinda cool sometimes, kinda corny at others, and kinda just blah the rest of the time. However, the real reason why I like KPCC? It's got rather fair and balanced call-in talk shows - Air Talk with Larry Mantle, and Patt Morrison's show. These actually cover topics and are on the whole fairly well balanced between pro and con. Sure, it's an NPR member station, so it has those quarterly drives, and it also leans a little to the left. However for these "lows" it makes up with great programming. That's the reason why it's the first station in my car. Now if only I had better reception down in south OC... read more

Fantastic station. Unfortunately, that two-star reviewer below doesn't understand the meaning of the word "corporate". NPR in general has gotten a lot of flack the past few years for leaning in the liberal direction, which I can see on a few occassions. Mostly, however, the news is balanced and factual. KPCC specifically, however, presents both the left and right wing with fair portions, and for that they have my utmost respect. Larry Mantle and Patt Morrisson are regular parts of my day. Fantastic journalism. Sandra Tsing Loh must begone, though. I like her science segment, but her voice makes dogs circle the block. I love the Car Talk guys, you dopes! They're fuckin' brilliant and can take apart an engine and put it back together telepathically over the radio! read more

Instead, you'll find all kinds of interesting shows to listen to, such as Air Talk with Larry Mantle and All Things Considered. There's the BBC World Service and, of course, those amusing brothers on Car Talk. Another favourite is Wait Wait. . .Don't Tell Me! the NPR news quiz, where you can test your knowledge of the week's events and have a few laughs. Having been a listener (and member) for many years, I've come to rely KPCC for my news as well as education and entertainment when in the car. There's simply no other source, whether radio or TV, that provides me with the depth and diversity of news and stories. I can't count the number of times that I've sat in the car to finish listening to a segment after arriving at my destination. Long live American public radio. I particularly enjoy their serious news segments and interest pieces concerning foreign affairs and national issues, but generally steer clear of their more light-hearted programming on the weekends. One exception is 'Wait Wait Don't Tell Me' - that's just truckloads of laughs. With public radio's federal funding now under scrutiny on Capitol Hill, it behooves us listeners to step up our contribution in the coming years. read more

Well, I do enjoy listening and it does make my commute interesting and engaging. However, I'm trying desperately to donate, and they won't accept my donation. I've made 2 appointments, and their tow company has never showed. The switchboard guy will not take complaints or inquiries how to fix this, as he is too busy reading from his script. The tow truck guy apparently has told KPCC that they showed up. I know what a tow truck looks like, and one never came. I left work early twice at my expense to meet the tow truck, and have waited 7.5 hours. Who can afford this kind of hassle to support public radio? Donating to non-profits should not be so cumbersome and discouraging. read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE KPCC! When I relocated here from the SF Bay Area 10 years ago, I wasn't sure I could survive without KQED FM...but then I found KPCC. My favorite shows are Larry Mantle, Pat Morrison, Fresh Air (Terry Gross), A Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, and Science Fridays. Quality programming. And Shirley Jahad rocks!! (Yes, I actually said that.) And by the way, this is where you want to be tuned in when serious events are developing in the world. KPCC will get you the FACTS, so that you can be well-informed and make your own decisions. Yes! In my continued quest to achieve uber white liberaldom, I enjoy some NPR. Unlike San Diego, KPCC plays the scintillating infofest well into the night, for all of you news junkies. I was delighted to only have to switch the dial from 89.5 to 89.3 as I drove up to LA from SD. The station comes in clear throughout much of the city, and they play most of your cherished highbrow fare. Woot. read more

I can remember exactly when I started listening to KPCC - it was the day after war was declared on Iraq. I'd been watching the network coverage, got tired of their packaged format, ridiculous graphics and theme music, and decided to listen to NPR instead. Now before I piss off any journalists out there, you should know that I was "them" - the media - for a short spell (at a small alternative press, but people hated me and my silly press pass just the same as the reporters from the mainstream) so cut me some slack. Anyway, the radio stayed on pretty much all the time - I was working from home in those days - and I was pretty much glued to the coverage. Then, the first Saturday after war had been declared and the battles begun, NPR provided a brief respite from the constant coverage - with the promise to cut in if need be - and Prairie Home Companion came on the air and I was hooked! Silly as it may sound, I was taken back to a time my grandparents described, before there was TV, when they used to sit around and listen to the old radio shows together. I think what I like most about listening to NPR is that to follow what's going on, you have to REALLY listen and be engaged. And if the story is done well, you will be. KPCC ROCKS! I love, love, love this station. Terrific coverage of international, national, local and general human interest stories. Sometimes I find myself still sitting in my car, listening to the station - 15 minutes after I had shut off the ignition. Usually with most radio stations, I only tune in for specific programs. However, with KPCC, I find myself attentively listening to EVERYTHING. Of course, some programs interest me more than others, but I'll this is the one station that I can tune into ANY time of the day (or night). Also, I appreciate the fact that the news isn't sensationalistic and well-balanced. read more

The best radio station in Los Angeles. I love their variety of programming from the weekend shows like "wait wait dont tell me" to "car talk". Please everyone support your local new stations like this one. Also be sure to check their website http://www.scpr.org/. I have been to two events now at the Crawford Family Forum. Its a great place to see a free concert or hear an interesting lecture. If you want to learn something while you drive give this station a shot. Also if you have an iPhone there is an KPCC app that will allow you to stream their shows from your iPhone. I find this useful when i don't get reception or when i travel i can still keep in touch with my KPCC. read more

This is my everyday station. I like NPR and this is where I can listen to the most NPR shows. I hate commercials on radio stations, especially the ones on Power 106 and KISS FM and them. This station broadcasts As It Happened through American Public Radio. Tonight I heard a 29 year old transmission of the host trying to get through to General Amin, "the conqueror". It was entertaining at first until it became clear that I was listening to a series of prank calls from 1979. You'd think they would have confirmed if they had reached the state residence of Uganda by now. What a waste of airwaves. read more
