My father was a fully paid resident at the Ladysmith Nursing Home for a short period of time. While he was there, he was given stool softens on a regular basis so that he was confined to diapers. He was wheelchair bound and the aids didn't want to take him to the bathroom so he sat in his diarrhea as a result of the stool softners. This was a punishment to him for his behavior. They also punished him by segregating him from others when he dined. Honestly, he was a meek, gentle and quiet man, hardly ever spoke. He had early stages of dementia and we were told he'd reach out his hands to the aids inappropriately, to make advances to female staff members. However, the staff was not trained how to handle him as compared to his next nursing home experience, which was excellent. As an example of neglect at the Ladysmith Nursing Home, after being transported in the nursing home van to the hospital for a checkup, he fell out off the van's elevated lift onto the sidewalk when the staff was lowering him in his wheel chair. He had some minor injuries and broke his glasses, too. However, he told us that fall wasn't nearly as bad as when he fell out of bed at the nursing home! That's when we made a final decision to relocate him. We never wanted to say anything while he was there for fear they would treat him even worse. read more
