Each pupusa is pretty large (larger than the ones I usually get from someplace else), so keep that in mind when ordering. A little over two weeks ago, I encountered this place after a night's disappointment of having found my favorite Pupusa-restaurant closed at 7pm. I don't typically venture out for Pupusas but the craving was real. Here is how this place fared on takeout with my tastebuds.... Don't bother phone ordering. They'll take your order but won't start cooking it till you get there. I was in a hurry so I figured I would call it in so it could be ready by the time I got there. Expectations versus reality. We ordered from this restaurant based on the Yelp reviews. I have gone to a specific restaurant for pupusas for a while but we decided to give this place a try. I opened the empanadas and said "what are these" never have I came across something like this. I am used to the empanadas sprinkled with sugar this looks like it was made in a rush, to be honest they don't even look like empanadas de leche. The taste was not good at all, it tasted like oil. La Teclena is such a low key gem that has great pupusas and a good variety of Mexican/Hondurian foods. We stopped by on a Friday night and it was fairly busy. Since it's very much a family mom and pop restaurant, service can be a bit slow but all that means is they're adding more of the extra ingredient, love! To start, they give you some sliced pieces of fried dough and refried beans dip that was so tasty and almost creamy. Then we had a revuelta which had some solid filling and they have their in house curtido that comes in cute jars! The tacos here are pretty good as well, though I just wish there were more meat to give each bite a little more something something. We went here before a performance that we saw down the street. We were so pleasantly surprised. We started with appetizer of guacamole and chips and the Mexican fries (which had a bean dip). The guacamole was to die for. They add a sprinkle of Cotija cheese to the top...yummy, but the best was how fresh it was. The salsa was perfect, but a bit spicy even for my BF (who loves spicy). For our main courses my boyfriend had the garlic shrimp with rice and beans. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, but for me the rice was the star. Like no other Mexican rice we have had. I tried their pupusas with cheese & frijoles and cheese & chicharrón, they were very savory, a little oily though. ~$2 I also tried their pollo taco it was surprisingly better than what I had imagined it to be, a must. $1.75 The service was exceptional, even though I was one of few patrons, the waitress that served me was sweet and had a motherly care for getting the food out to me. My neighborhood pupuseria! This place serves big pupusas for $1.95, or $1.50 on Wednesdays! What a bargain. You do have to wait about 20 minutes but that's because they're making it fresh for you.
