Check your bill before you pay!!…read more We visited Los Trompos Buena Vista Friday night after a long day traveling. The place seemed nice enough so we thought: "this should be good." Oh boy, were we wrong! I ordered the poc chuc, which I have previously had at other restaurants in Mérida. This is NOT it! This was a few dry, thin-cut, flavorless strips of fried, stiff pork with "frijoles rancheros," which was a vinegary concoction lacking in flavor and substance. My husband ordered two tacos which were left largely untouched because the flavor simply wasn't anywhere to be found. Ok, so maybe the chef was out sick or on vacation -- that happens and maybe we were unlucky enough to catch him/her on their day off. However, here is the kicker: when the bill arrived, there was this one item that neither of us had ordered. I motioned our server and asked him what the item was and he responded: "ah, another table ordered it and I got my orders mixed up." Yeah, right; another table had ordered the EXACT same food with the EXACT beer to the SAME table. Yeah, right. I am sure of it. He acknowledged my concern and returned in a few minutes with the correct bill. I will say this: People, CHECK your bill before you pay! This is not the first time this has happened before --not at this place, to be fair-- and that is why I never fail to check the bill. Was it a mistake? I guess you get to decide once you check your bill after ordering at this place.

The portion sizes are moderate, which we prefer(quality over quantity), the flavors are well developed and the plating is visually pleasing like any finer restaurant. It's loud, placed right in the middle of foot traffic, but for a special moment in time you can enjoy what may be the best taco in Merida. Maybe one of the best in Mexico. Specifically the lechon. The only problem with this place is if you have this too early in your trip all future Yucatecan dishes will be compared to it, but too late in your trip and you will always wonder if you should have come earlier so you could come back. My recommendation is to try it about 1/3 the way through your trip, not so early as to set an unfair standard but not so late to overhype it in your own head. Just a great taco at an amazing price and if you are only here for a few meals, this has to be one of them.

We started with the guacamole con chorizo y cerado. It was excellent. It might have been better than either of the entrees. I got the Lechon con frijoles negras. It's what my boss told me to get. It was good. I'm not sure it was worth a special trip but it was good. My wife is a bit of a picky eater. She wanted to play it safe so she got the Empanadas and a coke americano. The empanadas had a white sauce on them. I don't think it was cheese. It tasted like some kind of puréed yuca or potato. Everyone was drinking this green drink. It looked like a grass shot. I asked the server and they said it's called Agua de Chaya. They had a couple flavors so I got limon. It had a mild flavor. It was almost like a watered down fruit smoothie. The building was pretty neat. I think it was an old plantation house with several levels. There was a nice courtyard in the middle that most of the tables have a view. The courtyard has deer and peacocks wandering around. That was something I hadn't seen before. There was venison on the menu so it made me wonder.
