Mercado Benito Juarez is a traditional market in the city center of Oaxaca. It's right next to the…read moreZocalo (main square) and is an indoor market filled with fresh food stalls, meat and produce, souvenirs, and other goods. You'll see local delicacies like mezcal, tejate, and grasshoppers by the buckets. Beware that there is a raw meat alley that does not smell good at all if you're sensitive to that. If you're visiting Oaxaca you will most likely visit this market and the adjacent Mercado 20 de Noviembre. It's a glimpse into the daily lives of many local people and the things they eat, drink, and buy.

Every time I´m around I take a look at the market, I see what´s available and think of millions of ways to combine & prepare all the ingredients I see. You have to come ready to bargain, if you´ve never done it before this is the place to learn, you can save money and also learn a thing or two at the same time. I don´t visit as often as before since I´ve heard it´s not very safe anymore, so instead of saving some money I look for safe places to buy my food and feel comfortable at the same time.

I was very happy when I found out there was another location of this store being opened close to my…read morehouse. A lot of the times little stores do tend to sell stuff more expensive but the good thing is that they're within walking distance from home, and honestly I don't always feel like driving all the way to soriana or chedraui. This is not a very big store but it has all that you need and at good prices, you can even buy bulk of some things. Here I can find different kinds of garbage bags of good quality and that won't break when you lift them. Another thing I can't find in little stores: olive oil & oleic oil, which obviously is available here.
