La Plaza Mall has grown, but for me it's less a place to shop and more a place to walk with air conditioning and observe with amazement and wonder the diverse crowd of humanity and also the evolved mall creatures with rainbow hair and pieces of metal sticking out of their tongues. Unless you're really into paying large amounts of money for the privilege of advertising for a company by wearing clothing covered with their logo (so others know you paid $800 for your sneakers), or cheap Chinese imported fad stuff, you may want to use the entrance that leads directly into the anchor store you want to shop. Thank God, there is still a JC Penny, Dillard's and Macy's and a few decent places to eat. Those who are more adventurous can enter the vortex that is the mall where there are other stores like Old Navy, Abercrombie & Fitch, Build a Bear Workshop, Torrid, Hot Topic, Sephora, Bath & Body, Victoria's (not so) Secret, Van's, Boot Jack, and a few chain jewelry stores like Zales, Kay, and Reed's. Naturally (or unnaturally) there is also a labyrinth of kiosks and other smaller stores all competing for your attention and money. You'll find people trying to spray you with fragrances, straighten or curl your hair, fit you with a hair piece, put some new glitter make-up on your face, or polish your shoes for free ...only to try to pressure you into buying their way over-priced shoe polishing kit or at least give them a big tip. Can you tell I'm not really into malls? I had not been in over a year. I was going to the bank, but discovered it doesn't open till 11 AM, so I could drive somewhere else or walk around for 25 minutes. I chose the latter as walking is good exercise. The Northside newer expansion of the mall has some good restaurants like Texas de Brazil and Yard House. Of course you can always go to the food court and eat a large pizza sized cookie or some kind of fast food while trying to pretend you don't mind the whining children and their parents who ignore them. Thankfully, when I went it was a weekday morning and not many mall creatures were out. The parking garage was mostly empty. But I saw enough that I know I do not want to return during the Christmas shopping season. If you happen to be a mall creature, I wish you well, and a long happy life. Please don't take it personal if I do a double take when I see you made up as an Anime character doll complete with special pupil-enhancing contact lenses, or sporting subdermal implanted Vulcan-style bumps or a third eye tattooed on your forehead. My reaction is involuntary and partly out of shock. I've never had a piercing except for my annual flu shot. read more

I have been visiting this mall for many years, and it's one of the best options in the valley area. It offers bigger and better stores compared to another mall I usually go to. This location is always very busy, so expect it to be congested, especially on weekends and holidays. One thing I wish they would change is the food pavilion. I would like to see them add something to prevent the chairs from making noise when people drag them. read more

My thoughts on Lego store McAllen I love LEGO products and have had great experiences at LEGO stores over the years, but my most recent visit was disappointing. I came in to exchange a brand-new, unopened set purchased just a week ago. I had paid real money for my order along with LEGO Insiders points, but because the system made an accounting choice to split the points across all items that I had purchased that day, I was told I couldn't exchange this set - worth only $80 despite me having paid $139 that day on debit - despite the fact that if I'd simply gifted it as initially intended, anyone could have gotten full store credit with absolutely zero hassle. This policy ends up penalizing HONEST customers and created a rather inconsistent experience for me. On top of that, the staff were not as knowledgeable or polite as l've come to expect from THE LEGO STORE. The manager, Ricky, became seriously standoffish, and the (polite) clerk clearly lacked the training needed to understand LEGO's own technical policies. This was very different from the warm, and yet informed service l've come to enjoy at LEGO's stores over the years. I thought LEGO should be better than letting sneaky accounting choices and poor flexibility override basic fairness to its patrons. Lego is one of the last stores still getting me to come out and patronize, keep dropping the ball on people like this, and it won't continue to be. read more

Shoe shine & repair!!! This is at the end of the food court on the west side exit. Then if you're hungry, there are a several places to have a meal or snack and comfortable enough seating. Check out the pics. Great place to go if you want to walk around in the air condition; it's super hot in Texas during the summers. Most people come in the morning and do their walking. Yes, the shops are still closed, but after you walk, you can shop. I guess. Lol They now have decorative pieces inside and out along the food court which is pretty cool. Been going to this mall for the longest time. It's grown bigger and better over the years. A lot more stores and food options than ever before. I honestly miss the old look from around 2010, but you can't beat how much bigger and better it is now. read more

This mall has lots of stores and restaurants. The layout is a little funky but overall great clean mall.

It wasn't a pleasant visit as getting there there was a mess of an accident. While inside the mall there are no information screens anywhere as in most mall's. Well after trying to find my way around more than half the stores were closed due to power lost the day before from a storm and most of the ones open wanted cash( who Carrie's cash anymore to shop at a mall). Prices were more expensive than I'm use to must be due to so close to the Border of Mexico. The most craziest part was no internet service my cell went into SOS only and if you wanted to connect to the malls you needed to give way to much information like date of birth address, that's a sure way of getting your information stolen. I would not recommend this mall. read more

Recently remodeled from the expressway side, you can really tell they're committed to making this mall the best in the valley with all the recent updates. I believe they still have about 30% more to complete the whole remodeling project. The new stores and businesses that are opening are some of the higher quality places. Awesome places like Texas de Brazil, Carlo's Bakery, YardHouse, H&M, and others that are currently being build as we speak. You'll find your favorite stores like JC Penny, Dillard's, Macy's and other great variety like Armani Exchange, Express, Buckle, Van's, The Disney Store, two Gamestops one on the east side the other on the west side, Crocs, Gap, Crazy 8, Foot Locker, Coach, Fossil, Oakley and many others. They also have great treats and more at the food court like Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Fresh Bar, Marble Slab Creamery and many many more. They have a cool cantina on the east side of the mall, I've been there a few times and enjoyed my time there. I heard that the mall had recent renovations and seem not even a year has passed and the carpeting in new wing of mall is filthy with oil stains and water damage and lord knows what else. Filthy af!!! Seriously the people here don't know how to respect public property. So freaking disgusting. I would come to look once if you are from out of town but that's it. read more

I feel I need to write a two part review for the mall with one for the actual La Plaza Mall and another for the shoppers or more on point, stroller parents. First, I've never seen a mall with so many strollers!! Honestly, a ridiculous amount! Infant & toddler strollers, necessary, to elementary school age children who were very capable of walking. Then driven by many, but not all, inconsiderate and entitled parents. Courtesy is out the door here and I had my heels ran over, parents ramming into main isles from side isles and kids grabbing at my bags. Due to the obstacle course of strollers we found it difficult to impossible to move around freely in many stores. I found the La Plaza Mall quite nice with a respectable selection of stores and shops throughout. Dillards, Macy's, JC Penny's appear to be the anchor stores with numerous, small, open air shops selling, purses, food, jewlery, and more jewlery, home decor, and others in mall walkways. Regardless of which area of the mall you're in its easy to locate a snack or beverage even if your not in the food court area. I'm hoping to get back before I leave town and try the fresh whole kernel corn stand. The topping flavors sounded delicious and it was easy to eat from a large cup. The food court was a respectable size with a nice variety of restaurants to choose from. It was packed to capacity Saturday but tables were turning rather quickly so there was very little wait time. The carousel was one of the most popular areas for my 8 year old niece along with Crazy 8 clothing store. La Plaza Mall is definitely worth the time and effort to shop here if you're in the area. Be patient locating a parking space and begin the experience on a positive note. read more

I LOVE shopping at the American Eagle at La Plaza Mall. All of the managers are nice and the sales associates are SUPER friendly and are skilled at helping their customers find the perfect jean with the perfect fit! The clothing is good quality and worth the money. Plus, their advertising is AUTHENTIC. I love the fact that American Eagle has stopped photoshopping their models. Beautiful mall both exteriorly and interiorly. Offers a great variety of stores, with several new stores being added at the end of November. Everything is new, with touchscreen maps of the mall where you're able to zoom in and out to search for stores. They offer both interior parking inside a parking garage and parking outside. The mall is very large with some stores having two stories like Agaci. Overall, I was really impressed with this mall, very clean and new. With a large variety of stores, a large food court and offers ample parking. read more

I'm going to try to be fair here because I do live in Los Angeles and we are fortunate to have really good shopping as a whole, by default. My parents live in McAllen though and my mom and I always seem to find our ways here, sans Dad (ha-ha), when I come to visit. This place has most of the places I like to shop when I'm watching my wallet, and some when I'm not...plus there are two Sephoras (the one in Penney's and the big one), and that's enough to keep me entertained for hours (smile). Mom said this mall makes, per capita, more money annually than any other mall in the U.S., and I believe it. Any random day the parking lot is filled with cars with Mexican plates...it's like Black Friday every day, but surprisingly the people who work there do not act as though they're being run over and overwhelmed. They are also very friendly and helpful, which again is an anomaly in LA County. Good mall, oh and it's nicely laid out as well. Too many traditional malls are boring and cookie cutter and while this one is hardly cutting-edge, it doesn't make me feel as though it's 1997 all over again. :) read more

I really like this mall, just not on the weekends when it is insanely busy! I like to go early in the morning on a week day. I get some awesome deals at Macy's and The Children's Place with coupons they send me. I know a lot of people who live in the area refuse to come here because it is overcrowded and a hassle (hard to find a parking spot if you don't get there early enough, ugh). I find nice clothing and good prices every time I go so I just deal with it. read more

It's getting better! I am very excited about the changes coming to La Plaza Mall. The impending renovations are going to be for the better which will help attract more quality businesses to the Valley. The Dillard's at La Plaza is still the best department store at the mall - a selection of everything for everyone's needs. The Macy's is a bit chaotic (don't ever go on weekends), the Macy's Home Store is always cluttered, and I never shop at the JCPenny's because I'm fearful for my safety (people will run you over). I'm always peeking into LOFT during sales, the Banana Republic is older and doesn't always have the latest styles like other stores, but the athletic shoe stores are abundant and frequently busy. What makes me scratch my head are the SWATCH and off-brand perfume stores; couldn't those spaces be used for establishments with better quality merchandise? All in all, I think La Plaza is the place to go when needing to shop for closet staples. It's like any other mall, but it is the nicest mall in the Valley. I'm crossing my fingers that a Nordstrom or Cafe Express graces our presence with the expansion. One can always dream! read more

I have had the opportunity to travel and visit many malls and I have to say that our McAllen mall is a very good one that offers many options. It might not compare to those in the large city like Houston but I would say that thanks to the large number of Mexican buyers that come across the border The locals get to have a great quality mall. The only bad part currently is that it is under construction and renovation which we have to deal with while we get the final product which has already taken a bit long but let's hope it's all worth it at the end of the day. read more

I used to manage the Waldenbooks here, and I must say that the mall itself is really pretty awesome. Not just full of jewelry stores and cell phone kiosks, but great clothing, nice specialty store selections, and a good food court to boot. The parking lot sucks though, with very few entrances/ exits, so that's why only 3 stars. read more

Too many people, and many of them are rude. I have had parking lots taken from me, when clearly waiting w/my blinker on and have had men step on my feet, NOT say excuse me and then give me a terrible stare. People cut in line here and some of the mall employees do not speak English. read more

This is hands down the best mall in the Rio Grande Valley. It's not huge, but it's a pretty good size. It has super affordable clothes and all your typical middle class brands. As a college student, I love finding things that I like without having to pay a ton for it. I swear I miss it when I travel away from the Valley for extended periods of time. read more

Santa experience quite the experience!!!! The mall is Nice and clean and well stocked but we went there with a purpose for this day and frankly it would be quite nice if the people that were running the santa photo booth were not such rude women, treating the customers like trash that was unbelievable when I was there yesterday were asking a legitimate questions if there was any way that we could see photos better because they put a watermark in front of the faces of these kids so we could not see if the smiles and poses were ok? and this lady and her sidekick got so rude and basically told us to deal with it get over it that's the only way we can see them? And then threatened to call security on us for just asking? After we both voiced a verbal opinion on her conduct, that's ridiculous I finally had to ask these clowns to stop acting like fools in front of everybody and get on with their business, they both would not get off their power trip, because frankly somebody had to act like an adult in the Room. that was embarrassing I'm not asking for people to be fired but they should be trained with sensitivity training or something because I have never Encountered the rudest Most disrespectful uncouth, unprofessional santas helpers ever in one location and Santa Claus is name is on that.. and so is yours! Quite a large yet simple mall.There is lots of stores for all people,and it's recently been remodeled and expanded.The downside is it is really hard to find parking,but they fixed thus issue by adding a parking carafe.The reason I'm giving 4 and not 5 stars is because the other mall I have been to(galleria mall)is impressively much more better. read more

La Plaza Mall it's pretty much the only mall in the McAllen area. It's not a bad mall, it has quite a few options available. It is currently getting some renovations done, which it needs. What you need to know about this mall if you are from out of town is that it does a great deal of international retail business. I understand it is one of the top retailing malls in the United States, and if you ever go there and see the crowd you will know why. The mall is pretty much always crowded with shoppers coming from across the border for American prices. I'm not joking they actually bring tour buses from Mexico full of people on shopping tours to shop at this mall. That's great for the local economy, but it makes for an incredibly crowded shopping experience. You will probably need to be aware of Mexican holidays such as holy week because the mall gets even more crowded at that time and it is almost impossible to find a parking space. As locals we pretty much only go there when we need to visit a particular store that is only in the mall, and avoid the crowds the rest of the time. Also just don't even bother going anytime after Thanksgiving. read more
