This used to be Manila Tokyo. Ihaw-Ihaw means "carinderia",…read morea small-scale restaurant popular in the Philippines. Thank you,Wiki. This is a good place to introduce someone to some Filipino dishes.since they have more than a dozen different entrees, and a couple of desserts. They have pancit, lumpia, pork adobo. chicken adobo, longaniza, beefsteak,sisig,kare-kare,fried fish, squid, and your choice of white or fried rice. I must confess that I didn't know the names of the other dishes.. Kim H,her brother,Jeff, and I came here on a hot Santa Ana day for lunch. There are small tables on the left side next to the buffet line. In the middle of the room is a dance floor. And in the corner is a large karaoke set. Thank God, they are only on at dinnertime. Hanging from the ceiling is a TV set permanently tuned to "The Filipino Channel". The dishes were surprisingly good. Jeff had never tasted Filipino food, and he claimed that he enjoyed it. He kept going back for more pancit ,squid, adobo,& kare-kare. Both concentrated on eating, while I did what I liked. People watch. Really,it was like a family gathering. The customers were: a table full of Navy chiefs wearing their khakis, just eating and drinking San Miguel beer. One table had an Auntie who had bronzed colored hair, next to an Uncle, whose toupee would flutter up each time the front door opened. (Santa Ana wind.) There was a Lolo(grandpa) in another table who had his dentures on a napkin next to him as he slurped the "sabaw"(broth). One of the ladies who worked there even came and talked to me. Lady: Hoy, Arr yoo Pilipino? Me: Yes, ma'm Lady: Iss dees yoor gerrprend?(didn't wait for me to answer) Yoo weel hab biuteepul cheedren. (grins) Me: Thank you. Me: Didn't this place used to be called Manila Tokyo? Lady: Dyes, Da unerr she diborst her Djapanis hasbant. Den she sold. Me: Okay. As we were walking back to our car, two ladies were yelling at each other in the parking lot. "PUTANG INA MO!!" (your mother is a wh*re!!!) or (Bitch) "MAMATAY KA"! ( you will die!) Kim asked me what they were saying. I replied, "Oh,one was complaining that she lost money in the casinos." Hehehe. A fun day in National City, indeed.

Don't know what I liked most about this place: The food, the owner, or the "Holy Shit! What the…read morehell is a Thai restaurant doing there!" location. After jogging and exploring past this place a few times, I decided it was time to drop in for lunch. I was immediately consumed by that distinct feeling you get when you walk into a lunch place at 12:30, only to find that you're not only the only person to eat lunch there today, but quite possibly the only person to eat lunch there this week. It's a feeling that tells you: "This place is either gonna' be really good, or I'm gonna' need my stomach pumped." As of now, 3 hours after eating there, the contents of my stomach are still very much where they should be. This is a very good sign. The woman who owns the place and greeted me is pretty much exactly the person you'd expect to meet in such an unexpected location -- as friendly as her English is broken, as young as the overdone decor. She'll recommend things when all you want to do is read the menu; she'll talk to you when all you want to do is listen. She won't offer you dessert. Not even a 'happy ending'. But she'll unwittingly demonstrate what is right about City Heights, right about San Diego, and right about America. The Green Chicken Curry was good. The rice was Uncle Ben's. In a Thai place, this should be a crime. In City Heights, this should be expected. But my 5-star enthusiasm for Mekong Village says more about the restaurant's aspirations than for its curry, its character or its decor. With condo conversions sprouting up around it like poop from a diuretic anus, a place like this actually stands a chance -- especially if it dresses itself up a bit for the people who live IN those houses, rather than those who live under them. You never know what will happen with the right marketing. And it's in this vein that the owner really made her impression. She doesn't like the name, she wants to change it, and she asked me for my suggestions. I gave her one. It is fantastic. So crazy it just might work. And she really sounded like she'll take it . So don't be surprised if, on this nondescript corner of 47th and Imperial, you see the name emblazoned in lights: "Imperial Thai Cuisine" You heard it here first.
